This thread could go wrong quiet easily and will be difficult to explain.

There are already multiple thread's for who was the best player ever so this is not that. (hence why robino is on the list)

What i want to know is who people would consider the player with the most sheer ability.

I do not mean in terms of goalscoring or defensive ability hence why only one defender is on the list.

I mean who seemed most at ease with the ball. Who found it second nature to dribble past 5-6 players or humilate the defender with an elastico through the legs.

my personal vote goes to maradona with ronaldinho a very very close second.

mine had to be pele he could do stuff with a heavy ball that some people cant do with a light ball these days

Maybe Messi, but I'd said either Garrincha or Cruyff.

No seriously im sorry if i you took that the wrong way. I was entirely truthfull. It is an excellent point and it did not even cross my mind

For me it has to be Messi, but I must admit I wasn't alive to see alot of those players. I think the defensive aspect of the game has improved dramatically since thirty or forty years ago, so for Messi to do what he does now is truly remarkable. Also, players are much fitter and more athletic than they were back then.

I think if say, Cruyff was in his peak now, he would have to play quite differently to have the same effect on the pitch. So it makes it hard to draw comparisons like that.

erm....what about Paul Scholes, who Xavi referred to as the most complete midfielder he has ever seen in the past 15-20 years? Surprised there's no English players in there

Paul scholes was a great player yes, but he was never known for his ability to beat multiple defenders. That is what this thread is about.

also in regards to there being no English players. Could you name any who could hold a candle to the likes of ronaldinho or zidane, cruyff and maradona in terms of sheer talent ?

Meh, never would have considered Scholes as an expert dribbler.(not a biased Liverpool fan as he was an excellent player). Scholes never really took on players head to head.

For me it was Zidane. Dribbled quite slowly but his ball contol made him skip past opponents with ease. My 2nd and 3rd picks are Stanley Matthews and George Best. All 3 for me eclipse any on the list including Messi,Cryuff and Maradonna... Suprised anybody else didnt mention them or not on the list.

Read my post. George Best and Stanley Matthews. They were the pioneers of skillful dribbling.

Stanley Matthews definately. Classing Messi as the greatest dribbler ever is a bit too soon bearing in mind the undiscovered gems out there, and he's still very very young with a long, long career ahead of him-barring any physical burnout or career ending injury. Ryan Giggs should be in there too-some of the tricks he's pulled out the bag have been absolutely tremondous. Picking the greatest ever dribbler is pretty nigh on impossible.

Completely agree, Dont think Messi and C. Ronaldo shold be in the list yet as they are relatively young. Im also of the opinion that Robinho shouldnt be in the list or Figo and Nedved as neither were in the same class as other options. Nobody will say one player except younger people who choose messi simply as they havnt seen some of the older generation of players.

Jay-Jay Okocha - so good that they named him twice! :D
Actually I'd pick George Best, he just ripped everyone apart.
