I am currently in my first year of full time employment (teacher if anyone cares!) I am wanting to save up for a new laptop, however, I know pretty much nothing about them, and am worried i'll get taken for a mug by a salesman in PC world or wherever I go!

I would like the laptop to be:

  • around £800-£1000 max.
  • have the best stats possible (i do not know what the numbers mean, but i'd like them to be good lol!)
  • has to be able to play games (FM 2013 included, but more graphic based ones as well)

Basically, this laptop has to be the best one i've ever owned by a mile. I probably won't buy another for about 5-6 years so it needs to last a while, and be good enough to cope with the technilogical developments of games during that time.

I really would appreciate help and advise because as I said, i'm not the most knowledgeable in this area!

You are saving for a laptop? The PC market moves so quickly that something that is top of the range now may not be in a few months time. How long will you be saving for?

Also, what is it you want it for? Gaming? Cus that could be a bit difficult graphics wise.

There aren't many laptops with dedicated graphics cards anymore - it's tough to find ones that do.

For 800-1000 you are going to get yourself a sweet piece of kit, but if the most demanding thing your going to do on it is play FM13, 500-650 will buy you an appropriate laptop.

Look for 4-6GB RAM, an i5 processor and a dedicated GFX card (an nvidia one or something) as a guideline of what you might need.

I will buy one in around 6 months probably....it can't be moving that fast, and anyway it has to last me a few years after that....Thanks for the info dfiance, very helpful. I would like to play games like battlefield on it as well :)

i would go for Asus n55sl . But if you are planing to get it in 6 months... things will change.

I have a Sansung RC520 its about 14months old now and its still an absolute tank... Core i5, 6gb ram, 750hd, LED HD screen, not sure about my graphics but it was capable of playing Arma 2 so it has to have some decent power to do that... all for 670euro...

personally i wouldnt bother with a laptop, there overpriced compared to a desktop with less equipment in it,

if you want a laptop avoid the big shops argos comet currys etc, also go online, they are much cheaper.

like everyone else says i5 with atleast 4gb ram.

Ah, a lot will change in 6 months. But you should be looking for about 4-8gb of RAM and look for an i7 processor, they are available in most laptops over £700 atm.. You might even be able to get i9 by then, not sure! I would link you to a few laptops but no doubt they will not be around in 6 months! haha

Also, look into ultrabooks, they're basically the same as laptops just thiner, and quicker (quicker wi-fi, booting) etc.

You won't find a laptop capable of playing the most demanding games on high graphics but it will be able to handle current games and should be able to just about keep up for the next couple of years.. Only problem is the graphics cards are gash in laptops so don't be expecting to be able to play all the latest games! If you want to do that then buy a PC, you can get a top of the line PC for under £800

If you have that much to spend, I would highly recommend getting a custom built one. They are by far better than anything you can get sitting on a shelf in a store. I highly recommend getting one from Custom Build Gaming PC, Desktop PC, Custom Computers, Gaming Laptops also when it comes time, just go on the forum on there, tell them your budget and what you really want it for, and the tech savvy peeps on there will build you the best for your budget :)

Sony Vaio's a great laptops with a decent spec!

Mine has an i3 processor, 4GB RAM and a standard graphics card (which isn't really relevant as FM13's graphics aren't demanding)... More than does the job and cost £400! My computer's speed according to FM13 is 5 stars out of 5 stats too by the way.

Cheapest place to get laptops is a website called Ebuyer, highly recommended!
