I got this great AMR, he's on 170k a week and 3 years remaining contract, i tried to extend him now, but he wants 275k, which i dont want to give..

So yeah, in general whats the best time? 2 years remaining contract or less or more?.. whatare pros and cons?

All I can tell you is do it before 6 months, as they're free to negotiate a new contract with any other team at that point.

I only offer when in last 6-18 months of contract because I'm a firm believer that if a players signs a contract he should stick to it. Player happiness plays a bigger part in FM13 and new contracts go some way to keeping players happy, but giving higher wages to a player can unsettle other players who then in turn demand a wage hike. Imo 2 years left to run is way to early to be giving a new contract, it also depends on their agent, some are greedy leech like creatures that should be burned at the stake. In your case if a player want a HUGE wage hike I will try to talk him down if he is concerned but if that don't work I sell him. No player is bigger than the club.

Well, this AMR is a beast, consistent, so i wont sell him as much as possible. But the point really is are there pros and cons when extending / improving contract base on how many years remaining or how well they're performing

(e.g. young player, racking up goal per game, averaging 7.7 a game, getting paid for 40k a week ( still 4 years remaining), where another player just performing below this young cheap player is at 140k a week?..) obviously the young player deserve to get paid more? what you usually do?

If you have a young player that is doing better than your 140k per week player and they play in the same position, you can sell your player on 140k wages and open up extra wages and hopefully bring in a lot of transfer money for your club, so then bring in another young backup, maybe, in case your young 40k wage player gets injured, and have some extra transfer money to either save, or spend on building depth elsewhere...

I have the same problem, however. My players always want a high salary hike at some point while at the club, but I have a wage structure and I won't let a player go over my wage structure max unless they are super special, like the next Messi. Otherwise, they I try to negotiate it down, or sell them on and bring in someone else who is good and fits the structure, all while maintaining a competitive side. I normally offer a new contract to my players with 1year-6months left, unless they are playing very well and I am to keep them at the club for a long term and don't see them leaving anytime soon.

@freak - He still got 3 years. I dont want to lose him, he is now racking a goal a game in a IF(right) position, he can be a great Striker, 190cm, fast, finishing, off the ball..but i got a striker who is almost the same but better..

I was trying to extend him today, he wants now 300k a week.. LOL..

Take the lower value one if you think you can make it without your big wage player. It is better for the clubs finances and you can bring in more players in his place that should be younger and have more potential.

Why extend with 3 years left, you still have 2.5 years before things get critical.
The players is happy with good morale scoring goals and already on a fk ton of money, why rock the boat.
Whats his agent like? is he a greedy fker? if so by wanting to renew so early they will more often than not go for double bubble.

Over the 2.5 year period he would have been on 170K you going to dole out another 17 million quid on wages to ONE player if you pay him the 300k he wants. Crazy!
