Dutchman sensationally fired after poor run

Sky sources understands that Louis Van Gaal has today been sacked as Man Utd manager with the club sitting in 4th in the Premier League having been eliminated from the Champions League.

Tensions have been growing at Old Trafford for some time largely due to the side's poor football and lack of goals.

With speculating growing over Pep Guardiola's future at Bayern Munich he has been installed as one of the favourites to take the job.

Carlo Ancelotti remains the favourite at 4/1 while United old boys Gary Neville (5/1) and Ryan Giggs (6/1) slot in behind Guardiola (5/1).

United players lament Dutchman's reign

Ryan Giggs' first action as caretaker manager has been to recall James Wilson from his loan at Brighton ahead of United's trip to Anfield.

The news comes after a morning dominated by headlines of Van Gaal's mistreatment of the senior players at Old Trafford. The Sun and The Telegraph both ran with stories that keys members were unhappy with the former manager and his hard-line approach.

Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick were noted as players particularly unhappy under the Van Gaal regime although neither player has commented.

The Red Devils' search for a new manager is still ongoing although Ryan Giggs' caretaker role has made him favourite for the job with many bookmakers.

Caretaker to stay until the end of the season

Ryan Giggs will be given until the end of the season as Man Utd caretaker manager the club has announced.

News that transfer funds will be made available during the transfer window was also revealed in a club statement that has left the club's long term future up in the air.

It remains to be seen whether this is an audition for Giggs or if he is keeping the seat warm for Pep Guardiola.

SUMMARY

After taking over in January Ryan Giggs certainly brought more entertainment to Old Trafford including three cup rounds. However, they all ultimately ended in failure with the FA Cup Final defeat to Southampton particularly disappointing. The Red Devils did manage to qualify for the Champions League but it was not convincing and a total of 68 points was the second lowest in Premier League history - some 18 points off the champions Chelsea. A big improvement is needed next season.

EPL - 4th (68 pts)
LC - Finalists (lost 4-1 to Chelsea)
FAC - Finalists (lost 3-2 to Southampton)
UCL - Group Stage
UEL - Quarter Finalists (lost 5-3 on agg to Barcelona)

WHERE DO UNITED TURN?

Giggs' spell brought mixed results. Will he get the job permanently?

The newspapers are awash with rumours over Ryan Giggs' future and the Manchester United manager job.

Giggs managed a 48% win ratio last season, guiding United into the Champions League and into the finals of both the Capital One and FA Cups. The Welshman has received mixed reviews from the Reds fans and media.

Pep Guardiola joined Chelsea during the season leaving the other main contenders as Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Frank De Boer.

Do you think Giggs deserves the job?
