Black Metal

I disagree 100%

Sonata Arctica are one of the most unique sounds I have heard. Stratovarius too, can you tell me who sound like them?

Gamma Ray, Helloween,Angra, Edguy & Epica etc etc

they all sound completely different and have there own range.

Going back to Sonata, each album is unique to the last, check out Winterhearts Guild then Unia and notise the contrast.

True, the frontrunners of Power Metal are unique, but they've been going for about 10+ years, so they created the sound. But power metal bands who haven't been together for that long all try to imitate the older bands, and don't do it as well.

I may have to listen to more power metal, to see what you mean

Power metal is poor. Galloping bass and drums over a needlessly "shredding" guitar riff, and some shrieking man overpowering them all, is not my idea of music TBH

New bands will of course tend to sound like the originators, they're usually the people that made them want to form a band in the first place.

I prefer power metal, speed metal, and even viking metal. I listen to bands like:

Blind Guardian
Dragon Force
X Japan
Children of Bodom
Jorn Lande
Symphony X
Nightwish
Týr
Iron Maiden
Angra

...and lots of others, also listen to J-Rock

Yeah true. I'm just listening to Stratovarius now. Maybe it'll change my mind about it being overrated.

I think Sonata Arctica are better. I prefer Twilightning, Vision Divine, Secret Sphere, Primal Fear, Excalion, Thunderstone, Edguy to them really.

Why listen to black metal, when you can listen to take that.

I agree with you there, I have not found many new bands in years.

Living in Norway, I've seen many of them live. Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Immortal etc. And I also know one of the original cross burners, so I know second-hand about the original movement (he shagged Satyr's ex too). And if you think Vikernes is cool, you need to take a good long look at yourself. He was the biggest poser of all the metalheads, and was regularly teased by the others. Vikernes is such a big idiot it's beyond belief, as proven by his "break-out" a few years ago. Making a run for the border when the other country WILL extradite you is as dumb as it gets.

Not the big fan but you do get to hear some mental solos.

is it not true that some bands/fans burn down churchs? tad over the top me thinks.

More into power metal myself. Although I used to sit next to a girl in school who was obsessed with Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir...

Dimmu Borgir may be the most ridiculed Norwegian death metal band ever. Amusing fact: In 2008 (I think) Dimmu Borgir was Norway's 20th largest export.

To be fair, I don't know much about them, but the lass was pretty gay, so it doesn't supprise me.

I'm well into Black Dahlia Murder, Lamb of God, In Flames and Silverstein, they all probably are in different sub-genres but I guess they're pretty much all metal.

I saw Lamb of God supporting Slayer and In Flames, didn't really like them then, but that may be because Slayer pulled off a fantastic performance!
