Spaletti to Resign Due to Health Problems

Luciano Spaletti, manager of Russian Premier League member FC Zenit St. Petersburg, announced his resignation, effectively immediately, in a somber press conference this past Monday. The news came as a shock to both those in attendance, as well as Zenit faithful.

Spaletti, who came to Zenit from Roma just two seasons ago, was in the midst of returning Zenit to the top of Russian football, as the Blue and Whites caputured both the Russian Cup and the Russian Premier League title this past season.

Spaletti gave little detail regarding the specifics of his ailment, simply stating that the problem would render him incapable of fulfilling his duties as manager.

Zenit president Alexander Valeryevich Dyukov stated that Igor Simutenkov, Spaletti’s top assistant, would be named interim manager with the opportunity to have the interim tag removed based upon the club's performance over the next few months.

For this point forward, I will simply play out the games remaining on the schedule, providing monthly udates. As I have currently have an interim manager in place, whom I have no plans to retain, the story line will take some time to develop.
