You don't need to break anything to be out for a substantial period of time. As Mike. said, could be ligament damage etc? Or maybe the wound is just that bad and he doesn't have super healing powers like Nani ;)

Yeah I guess, but 6 months is a long time even for ligament damage..

Also, really reminded me of the Gerrard tackle in the FA Cup. Both players went in a bit rash, one player came out worse off and was correctly given the red card. Do feel sorry for the lad though.

6 months isnt long at all, you can out for upto 2 years with ligament damage

Not necessarily, Giovanni Moreno had torn knee ligaments not so long ago and will be out for 6-7 months, for instance.
 
Haven't followed him much but he seems like a lovely lad on Twitter.

Good to see that there's no afters and that he simply just wants to move on and get back to playing football as quick as he can :)
 
Seems like a really nice lad. Been really good this season. Wish him a speedy recovery and a great future.
