Bottom of The Football League
It's February 8th 2013 and Accrington Stanley fans around the UK wake up to find themselves bottom of League 2, and the Football League, after a 2-1 away defeat against Bradford last night. The Lancashire based club have just 12 games to turn their fortune around. Stanley have had an improvement of form since the start of the season when they went 4 League 2 matches without a victory before they managed to get the better of Wycombe Wanderers by one goal to nil. Accrington cannot blame their league form on a dazy cup run either as they were knocked out in the first round of both the Capital One Cup and the FA Cup by Sheffield United and Oxford United respectively.
In 2006, Accrington Stanley were promoted to the Football League for the first time in their 44 year existence. Since 2006, they have been a lower table League 2 side with finishes of 20th, 17th, 16th and 15th all in their first four years in the Football League. Stanley did, however, manage a high finish at the end of the 2010/2011 season where they finished 5th and earned a place in the play-offs.
Back to present day, Accrington have just 32 points from 34 games. This record includes just 8 victories with the team scoring only 31 goals along the way. Padraig Amond leads the club scoring charts with a total of 8 goals in all appearances after joining the club properly from Portugese club Paços de Ferreira. Despite Among leading the top scorers list, it is thought that, with the opening of the free transfer window, it's likely that Amond could find his once 'solid' place in the squad under huge threat.
