Box-to-Box Midfielder

Has anyone had any luck with this role? I can never seem to get the best out of a player playing this role.
For example I am currently managing Blackpool, and played Charlie Adam as a Box-to-Box mid, and his average was around 6.60, I then played him as an advanced playmaker and he has since averaged around 7.50.
This seems to be the same for anyone I try play in this role.

i use box-to-box midfielders in my fiorantina game, with Poli, D'Agostino or Montalivo and it works pretty well.
i have a regen who i play there and is scored most games he's come in for.
and always make sure to tell them to rarely shot from distance or they will do it everytime they have the ball

Do I need to play more than one of my midfielders as box-to-box? I am playing 4-2-3-1, with the other CM being a ball-winning mid. Charlie Adam does have decent all round stats.

Advanced playmaker suits better Charlie Adam. Just make sure to cut off long shots and run with ball to rarely whatever the role you choose
