Jurgen Klinsmann, the famed German striker and manager, has accepted the job offer from the USSF. He will be given control of all teams from U-16 and upwards.

United States of Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Yeah, heard it off Twitter. Interesting choice. I think he's good, but maybe not as good as he's been made out to be.

phuuuuck yeeeeeea!!!!!!

Was tired of Bradley and the team under performing. The loss to Mexico in the gold cup was humiliating.

I spent hours writing a post talking about how amazing this was. It was a long post by my standards. I was just about to finish and accidentally closed out of it, because internet explorer is a piece of ****. I went to 'restore lost content' or whatever, and it saved the first paragraph and nothing more. Can't believe it. A waste of hours of my time.

Anyways, best piece of news I've gotten in a long, long time.

What spurred this on is the U-20 team coach getting fired. He sucked but had been around for years. He aliented Neven Subotic to the point where he left the USNT setup (and he's exactly the player we need right now) as well as lost Michael Hoyos for us. Klinsmann wanted to coach us in '06 and '10 but he was turned down because he wanted control of the U-20 team and for the MLS players to be released when desired. Well, the U-20 team failed to qualify for a major competition (forget which one) and they fired the coach. The USNT continued to suck, and then there was the humiliating loss to Mexico in the final of the Gold Cup. Claudio Reyna, our youth director, came out with a statement saying that we needed to adopt one style of play in order to be successful. I think these things all came together to convince Sunil Gulati to appoint Klinsmann. I'm shocked though he was given control of that many youth teams: I had no idea that we'd give him that control. Before it was a disagreement just over the U-20 team, and now he's been given control up from the U-16's on up? I don't know what happened there but I'm thrilled about it. He revolutionized Germany's youth system and wants to do the same with the US. This could be a major turning point for American soccer.

He isn't as good of a manager as he's made out to be, but the point is he is the only person ever to have a very good pedigree as a player and manager AND be familiar with US soccer...he actually lives and loves in the US (lived in California while coaching the German national team) and WANTS to coach our team. He tried in '06 and '10, we're his first choice. He's not a foreign mercenary, which is what we'd get 99 times out of 100 with a foreign coach. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that we passed up on twice, so I'm so stoked it finally happened. I do feel a little bad for Bradley (even if he didn't deserve the job to begin with), he hasn't done anything wrong. He had good results, had his contract renewed, and then was sacked without really doing anything wrong. Sure we lost in some friendlies, but those were for experimenting with young players. And there's no way we could have beaten that Mexican team in the Gold Cup final. Hopefully this doesn't create a dangerous precedent of firing coaches. Having said that, the outcome is great so I couldn't be more thrilled.

I agree with most of what curtis said. Time will tell if Klinsmann is the right guy, but one thing is patently clear - a "dictatorship" is needed at this time in the USA. Someone has to provide a common direction top to bottom in the organization. "This is way we're going to play & this is how we will develop players to support that style".

lad mexico has to much quality for USA (Dos santos) FTW

Completely false. Mexico has better Forwards, USA has better Midfielders, both have mediocre back lines.
The disturbing trend about Mexico is that they DO have much stronger young talent than we do. That's because they have fed on the U17 success that they've had & created a unified direction. As stated above, this is where the USA is sadly lacking.

Time will tell if it all works out, feel bad for Bradley since he's been fired on the back of just reaching a final. No shame in losing to Mexico either, I mean..

I believe you're seriosuly underestimating Mexico there.

The funny thing is Chicharito didn't do **** that game, he was just offside constantly. Dos Santos and Barrera absolutely tore us to shreds though.

Mexico also struggled to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in CONCACAF, a late surge at the end saved them but it was looking like they wouldn't for a little while. But yeah, they have a few very good young players coming up. At this moment though they aren't much better than we are, and haven't been for the past decade. Overall the teams have been even in the 00's. But that's going to change with Mexico's recent youth success and our stagnancy, not to mention our most talented generation of players will all be too old in 2014. Klinsmann might not work miracles but it's a step in the right direction for US soccer, which badly needs direction and a long-term plan (which Klinsy will provide).

I was referring to the fact he said Mexico's midfield is not good. Mexico not only has good midfielders, but is getting better by the day. Today, although we were absolute ****, we had a hard time trying to beat them, only doing so through a flash of brilliance by Lamela. They're clearly the regional power in CONCACAF football and will continue to be at this rate.

Well we tied you guys twice in the past 3 years when we played you. Before this Gold Cup final, Mexico hadn't beaten us on our home soil in about a decade, except for the 09 Gold Cup when we sent our C team (our A team was at the Confederations Cup). People tend to underestimate the US and overestimate Mexico. We finished ahead of them in the '06 qualification cycle and the '10 qualification cycle. They're slightly better than us, and definitely will be for the next few years because of their great youth players, but I wouldn't call them the dominant power in CONCACAF.

In the past decade we haven't really done anything of note, and unless we cut off a few heads in the AFA (Maybe every head) it won't be long till we lose our place as a 'world power'.

Going back to Mexico, a couple of years ago they destroyed you 5-0 in the gold cup final, and this year they did so 4-2. That may show some improvement but it's gonna take more than that if you wanna convince me they're not the dominant force over there :P

We basically fielded an U21 team for the one gold cup final before the world cup

I never said Mexico's midfield wasn't good. I said ours, as of right now, is better. Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley & Edu (not Jones) is better than anything Mexico can put out there right now. Yes, their upside is tremendous, but as of today they can't match that midfield.

Having said that, the USA's strike force is shockingly inadequate - it MIGHT be 6th or 7th best in CONCACAF?? Fullback is not much better with the exception of Cherundolo.
