At the start of the 2009-2010 campaign, Brighton were predicted to come 16th by many media sources, and today unknown, unproved and very inexperienced manager Kieran Tidy has done the unimaginable, and landed the Seagulls top of the League One table, with a much needed 3-points on the last day of the season beating Yeovil Town 2-0 at the Withdean Stadium.

The start of the season brought a new manager to Brighton and Hove Albion, with Russell Slade managing to just about keep the Seagulls up the previous season, with the arrival of new chairman Tony Bloom, Slade mutually terminated his contract with the club as he had been told by Bloom that he was looking for different options.

Hoping a high profile name would be taking the seat at the Albion, local youngster Kieran Tidy, from Worthing, West Sussex, agreed a 1-and-a-half year contract with the club, stunning many media and famous fans of the club, dubbing it a ridiculous move for the club, even some supporters saying that they now expected the team to drop down the divisions quicker.

But Tidy ignored the media, and got straight down to business making 2 new signings within a week of his new job, ex-Coventry striker Michael Mifsud and 26-year old Moroccan midfielder Aderrahman Kabous, fans soon started to turn to Tidy, praising him for his "bargain" signings that he had made.

Signings continued to be welcomed through the gates at the Withdean, including Max Gradel from Leicester, Enoch Showumni from Leeds, and again diving into the free transfer market to pick up 29-year old centre back Daouda Jabi. Tidy also dived into the loan market, picking up Everton's Seamus Coleman, Arsenal's Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Swansea's Andrea Orlandi all on 6-month loan deals. A deal taking Jose Baxter from Everton to Brighton was almost complete, but complcations between Baxter and the Seagulls meant the transfer did not go through.

A positive pre-season saw Brighton pick up 6 wins, most notably a 4-0 victory over Bognor Regis Town, and then a similar score line against Eastwood. The only disappointment of Albion's pre-season came at the hands of Shrewsbury Town (3-0 loss) and Peterbrough United (4-2 loss).

A shaky start to the season saw Brighton pick up 7 points from their first 5 games, with one win and 4 draws, the Seagulls were unable to hold onto their leads and could not bury a game in the early stages of the season. This continued until Brighton picked up their first loss of the season to Bristol Rovers, a 2-1 outcome at the Memorial Stadium seemed to give Tidy and Brighton a kick up the rear and the Seagulls finally came into action, with the Seagulls starting to pick up more results, however the drawing frenzy soon continued, and again Brighton found themselves in need of a light to change their season.

But a high-scoring FA Cup tie against Aldershot seemed to bring Brighton some of that lost confidence, and the Seagulls began picking up some cracking results against league favourites Leeds United (3-0 win) and Charlton Athletic (2-1 win). Albion kept their winning streak until Brighton's second and final loss of the season to Norwich, then two draws caused a slight slip down the table, but two wins before the end of the year pushed Brighton right back up, putting themselves 5th going into the new year.

January brought some more faces to the Albion's squad including Iclandic midfielder Baldur Bett, ex-Man City and Charlton keeper Nicky Weaver, Slovenian defensive-midfielder Aleksander Radosavljevic, Norweigan young keeper Lars Stubhaug, ex-Derby defender Jermaine Johnson, young Burnley striker Wes Fletcher, and out-of-favour Cardiff striker Warren Feeney. January also saw a few more loan deals taking place, with Andrea Orlandi leaving the club, and Manchester United winger Tom Cleverley took the Spaniard's place as the resident left-winger. Seamus Coleman and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas also agreed a loan extension until the end of the season.

The new look Albion side began the new year in perfect style, picking up 4 wins and a single draw in the month, picking up two vital wins over fellow promotion challenging rivals Huddersfield and Millwall. Brighton also exited the FA Cup in January, forcing a replay from Blackburn Rovers, but the Albion fell to a 3-1 scoreline at Ewood Park.

February was a similar month to January, with the Albion picking up more solid results including high-profile draws against Leeds and Charlton, Albion were thankful that teams lower in the division were picking up great results against the teams around them, thus boosting the Seagulls up the table.

And after that very draw against Charlton, Tidy came out to the press saying that the Albion will be going for no less than the top 2 promotion spots, and he promised the fans that they will be in the Coca-Cola Championship in the 10/11 season. And his players seemed to respond in a brilliant way, winning their next 8 consecutive matches, uncluding setting a new League One record for goals scored in a match in a highly entertaining 6-4 victory over Oldham.

The Seagulls fans were more than ecstatic with Tidy's first season in charge, some fans claiming he is the best manager to pass through the Albion in recent times, and many fans made an online pledge to Tony Bloom to give the local star a longer contract to keep him at the club for years to come, as they believed that he can turn the team into what they believe is impossible, Premiership status.

The Albion now sat in 3rd place with 5 games to go, only a handful of points behind 2nd place Charlton, but still a mountain to climb to reach that all important 1st position spot which Tidy had promised to the fans.

A disappointing draw against Gillingham seemed to halt the Seagulls terrific form, but it wasn't long before the were back to winning ways, rebounding instantly with a crushing victory over Southend. The close of the season seemed to cause a wobble for Leeds and Charlton, who both started losing games that they really should have been winning, and soon Brighton found themselves 1 point off top-of-the-table Leeds with two games to go, and it was almost certain that Leeds and Brighton would be the two teams gaining automatic promotion to the Championship, unless Brighton caused an unlikely slip up and fell to Charlton Atheltic.

A convincing and unlikely 5-3 victory over play-off contenders MK Dons set-up a highly anticipated last day of the season drame, with the Albion on 97 points, a win or draw was needed for the Seagulls to become champions of League One, but with Leeds snapping at their ankles with 95 points, it was a winner takes all philosophy on that fateful day.

The day came and Brighton had the easier tie as they faced 23rd placed Yeovil Town, and Leeds had a tough home tie against Bristol Rovers, who were pushing to reach the play-offs on the last day too, however it was Leeds who started the day better as Jonathan Howson got on the score sheet and worry began to travel through the Seagulls fans minds, but that worry was soon turned into delight as Michael Mifsud fired his 25th Albion goal and sent Albion onto a century of points, with Leeds following closely behind on 98 points.

Pundits and fans knew that Yeovil did not have much of a chance of getting a goal past Brighton, but they certainly put up a challenge and troubled the Brighton defence on a few occasions but centre backs Jabi and Tunnicliffe were like a brick wall and Brighton managed to hold on to their lead going into the second half.

At the other end of the country Leeds were wobbling at Elland Road, as Rovers began to dominate play, but could not turn the play in the final third into goals, and Leeds were lucky to still be in the lead. Back on the south coast Brighton continued to dominate the game and the game as seen to be dead and buried on 76 minutes when Iclandic midfielder Baldur Bett fired a 20 yard volley to secure the game for the Seagulls, and almost certainly garunteed the top spot, only a freak comeback would damage the Seagulls chance of winning the League One trophy now.

Leeds were happy with the work that they had done, a team that did not deserve to be in this league, completely outclassed the rest, yet Brighton were strong all season and they will have to accept the fact that they were knocked off the top by a better team. Simon Grayson told his boys to run the game out and keep up the good work, but the brilliant work of Bristol Rovers led to a Darryl Duffy goal on 88 minutes, and now the trophy was all but Brighton.

Tidy was pacing in his managerial box, largely anticipating that final whistle, the Brighton faithful in the South Stand sang nothing but praise for Tidy, everyone was in a party mood and it wasn;t expected to stop for many weeks to come. The referee put the whistle to his lips and blew the final 3 blows of the 2009-2010 League One season, with Brighton and Hove Albion, the most unlikely team to top the table, did so winning the league by a comfortable 4 point margain.

Messages of praise piled through the Brighton letterbox, with many legends dubbing Tidy "The Greatest Brighton Manager of Modern Times" and Tidy himself was in a much better place than he was at the start of the season. After the Yeovil game he said, "At the start of the season I told Tony [Bloom] that we would be champions of League One, he laughed at what I had said and I did indeed have doubts in my mind, I sat at home thinking 'What have I done! Why did I say that! This really is going to be a challenge' and a small minority predicted I was too big for my boots and that I was too over ambitious, and to be honest I believed every word, but I listened to what my dad had told me when I was younger, and I took all the aspects of the game into consideration every time we faced a new team. I wanted different players to do different jobs on the field, and they certainly did me proud, and I could not be more happier than I am now, all the lads deserve praise for what they have done this season, and they deserve this upcoming break."

When asked how pleased he was with the signings he had made, Tidy said, "Well, what can you say thats bad about these players? I know some fans will be disappointed I have come in and completely changed the team, with basically a whole new set of players, but if the team are to progress that is what is needed. I am most pleased with Michaelm Mifsud, Aderrahman Kabous, Max Gradel, Warren Feeney and Baldur Bett, these guys have given 110% in every game they have played, and the final outcome is visible, our coaching staff have furthered these players careers and made them into quality players that have all contributed to the teams unimaginable."

Player of the Season - "Well, this is too difficult to chose, but I guess it has to be between Aderrahman [Kabous, Michael [Mifsud] and Tunnicliffe. These 2 guys have been essential to each stage of players on the pitch, the height and physicality of Tunnicliffe at the back has helped in us not conceeding many, Kabou's constant power both in defence and attack have brilliantly contributed to our championship victory, and finally Mifsud, this guy has been one of the best players in the League this season and I'm not suprised if he grabs attention from some higher tiered clubs, but we will almost certainly not sell him. He is a big part of my plans and I hope to keep him here for years to come. I could also include Baldur Bett in this list, as in the time he has been here he was been abseloutely superb and the fans love him, he has made himself and instant fan favourite and is sure to feature heavily in next years plans."

So, Brighton fans all around the country and piling praise onto Kieran Tidy's plate, but many are concerned that the new season will be a real test for the Albion and hope that Tidy has the confidence to bring his A-game to every match, and keep the Seagulls in the League that they rightly deserve to be in.

2009-2010 League One Champions

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way I will be starting this from the 2010-2011 season...if you didn't already know :D

I am going to look at a better layout when it comes to match reporting, but for now I'm sure the current layout will suffice.

PRE-SEASON ROUND UP

A new season and a new set of pre-season friendlies for the Albion, but this was a more disappointing outcome than some fans expected, taking on some Premier League talent, it was always going to be a tough mountain to climb for Brighton.

Pre-Season Round-Up

BHAPRESEASON.png

They started off with a visit from the Glenn Hoddle Academy, arguably a game Brighton easily should win, and of course they put in a 5-star performance and ran away 5-0 victors with a hattrick from winger Max Gradel and two goals from two of Brighton's new signings, but more of those two later.

Then they faced the Wednesday half of Sheffield, and were unfortunate as The Owls pulled off a 3-1 victory thanks to some dodgy refereeing from Kevin Friend, but the Seagulls were still optimistic about their teams performances.
Their good form continued as they travelled to Upton Park to face a full strength Hammers side on a cold Tuesday night, before the game Gianfranco Zola said, "I will be playing a full-strength team tonight, regardless of the opponents, I need to evaluate my players performances and I see this game a perfect way to assess some of our players."

Again Brighton were unlucky not to come away with anything from the game as West Ham showed that quality was key to a teams performance, and the Premier League outfit secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Mark Noble and Carlton Cole.
The Seagulls fourth pre-seaosn game was back at the Withdean Stadium to face South London club Fulham, the Seagulls looked in a strong position at half-time with a 2-1 advantage, but again the Premier League quality showed as Fulham turned the game around and came out 4-2 victors, a game in which the Albion fans were disappointed with the teams second half performance.

Things didn't get better for the Albion as they faced an extremely difficult trip to Villa Park to face again a full-strengh Premier League side, and everyone expected nothing less than a loss for the Albion, and that was exactly the outcome as they fell 4-0 to the Villans, a larger scoreline than many had predicted.
Things got worse for Brighton when Wolverhampton Wanderers visited the Withdean Stadium, the media had predicted a pretty even scoreline, but Wolves proved that they are a team not to be underestimated as they came out 6-0 winners with goals from Patrick Vieira, Kevin Doyle, Nenad Milijas, Sam Vokes, Stefan Maierhofer and Andrew Surman.

The Albion's final pre-season match was against Stoke at the Withdean Stadium, and with both teams featuring their own long throw specialist (Tunnicliffe for Brighton, Delap for Stoke), it was a test to see who could capitalise on the long throws and put the game beyond them ready for the new season.
But it was Delap's team that came out on top as expected, repeating a result similar to that of Brighton and Stoke's last meeting back in 2006, a final score of Brighton 1-5 Stoke.

So overall a poor pre-season for Brighton, but the opposition was arguably the toughest in the league, the fans were disappointed, but still had hope that Tidy can bring the side fourtunes in the coming season.

Transfers Round-Up

BHATRANSFERS.png

With the club in a tricky financial situation, TIdy was given a transfer budget of £0 and a limited wage budget, but luckily Tidy had pre-planned for this and made some deals during the season to take on those out of contract at the end of the current season. Here is the complete list of Brighton's signings:

David Nixon (Free) - The Airdrie United centre-back joined Brighton in the summer of 2010 after his contract expired, but a traning ground bust up with Liam Dickinson caused for Nixon to be released by the Albion, and DIckinson placed of the transfer list.

Scott Fox (Free) - The Celtic goalkeeper was given a free transfer by the Scottish club and Brighton swooped in and picked up the 23-year old player, but it is unlikely he will feature often due to the other quality of keepers that Brighton have acquired this season.

Gary Fisher (Free) - The young goalkeeper from Kilmarnock is hungry to get into the English leagues and build a solid base and learn the trade to become a decent goalkeepers, and he hopes to do that here at Brighton.

Chris Killen (Free) - The New-Zeleander found himself out of favour at Celtic and was looking to move out of Celtic Park, after a number of failed transfers Killen agreed a 2 year deal with Brighton, and hopes to prove himself in England.

Mark Brown (Free) - The goalkeeper also became out-of-favour with Celtic and was keen to move to an improving English side, and Brighton seemed to best destination for the Scotsman, and he still has a number of years left in him to prove his real goalkeeping ability.

Paul-Jose Mpoku (Free) - The 19-year old Belgian was under contract of Tottenham Hotspur but after a unsuccessful contract renewal, Mpoku found himself on the free transfer list, and Brighton were quickest to capitalise on the chance to snap up the player who is claimed to have great potential to become a Premier League player.

Sam Hutchinson (Loan) - The young Chelsea star joins the Albion on a season long loan after failed attempts from Brighton to resign Everton right-back Seamus Coleman, and the young star is set to be a regular feature in the Brighton backline.

Slobodan Rajkovic (Loan) - Brighton net another Chelsea loanee, this time at the left-back position, and similar to Hutchinson, Rajkovic is out to prove himself and this season and Brighton is his cnace to prove what he can do.

Franco di Santo (Loan) - Brighton net a triple loan deal from Chelsea with the final player being Chelsea striker Franco di Santo, who has found himself out of favour due to Anelka and Drogba's great performances up front for the Blues. He will be out to gain some more experience and improve his own play upon returning to Chelsea.

Andre Ayew (Loan) - Another big name loan for Brighton as Ayew is currently out of favour at l'OM, and has said he expects to enjoy his time here and gain some valuable first-team experience as he plans to further his l'OM career.

Freddy Adu (Loan) - Dubbed the "American Pele", fans and media have praised Tidy for his bargain loan signing in the young American winger, who had a fall out with Benfica manager Jorge Jesus, he is looking to get away from Portugal and into the English "beautiful game."

Andreas Wiegel, Patrick Koronkiewicz and Thanos Pestos were all signed by Tidy on free's after their youth contracts at their current clubs expired, and Tidy has said, "All these 3 guys have bags of potential, and our youth coaches should be more than capable of nurturing these guys into stars."

Pre-Season Over-View

Overall, the pre-season for Brighton has been mixed, some great signings coming through the door, but minor injuries led to the club playing weakened sides against some of the Premier League's big name teams, but Brighton are confident they can fill their pre-season expectation of coming mid-table, in what is to be a difficult season for the Seagulls.

Guys I need some advice, I have Franco di Santo and Michael Mifsud up front, what would be the best setting to have both of them playing as? :)

Looking good so far. Gook luck with the leauge

how did you get Adu :O PS: Try and get Matic and Kakuta

I was really suprised he agreed as well XD but I won't complain, as long as he performs :D

Great signings, di Santo will bang them in (H)

Good luck :)

Should have the august and september reviews up tonight :)

Good Luck in the Championship & Great captures of Di Santo & Adu on loan :)

Well done so far mate, great read.

I've got a Brighton save, infact I created my defensive tactics with them. I was top of the league at February, 6 points clear of Leeds, was a really fun save to play :) Keep it up.

i kind of have a soft spot for them for some reason, good luck

Brighton have always been a good team, just a shame we've never had a manager that has been capable of turning our team into a Championship side, defence has always been our issue, but now in real life that has been tidied up slightly..and hopefully next season we will be pushing on towards to top of the table, not loitering round flirting with relegation.

TIDY's DIARY - AUGUST

We get into the mind of Brighton manager Kieran Tidy and get his personal reviews of Brighton and Hove Albion's August fixtures:

BRIGHTON 3-1 LEICESTER

A very convincing 3-0 victory on the first day, I was more than suprised when we got the first goal, let alone 2 more to follow. Another vintage display from my star striker Michael Mifsud, proving that he can perform in the Championship not just the lower divisions. I always had conercns that a loss would have been on the cards today, but the boys went out and did exactly what I wanted, and that was show everyone what they can do. The only downside to the match was Tommy Elphick's red card, but I do feel it was a bit harsh, but we have the replacements necessary, so this wont damage the team too much.

Wycombe 1-3 BRIGHTON (League Cup Round 1)

A game that on paper we were always had the upper hand, I did not want to play a weakened team, as I thought this would again test the lads abilities of playing a lot of games in a short space of time, the Championship gives you a hectic schedule, and again they proved that they can still perform brilliantly if not a little tired. Again Michael Mifsud was on the score-sheet, and Baldur Bett is having a great time in centre midfield, a fan favourite, I am really happy he signed for us and has been contributing to the strikers up top.

Peterborough 2-1 BRIGHTON

I was optimistic coming into this game, as I believed that Peterborough were a team we could have had a chance in getting a result against, yes they are a good team, but they struggled in the previous season in this league, and I was hoping for a slightly better result than we got. Franco di Santo got on the score-sheet, and I was impressed with his performance, he is enjoying his time down here, and I hope we see more goals from him this season. But in this game our defence couldn't keep up with their strikers, and we were unlucky not to get anything from this fixture.

BRIGHTON 2-2 Plymouth

Back at the Withdean I hoped that the home advantage would have spurred the players onto an impressive performance, and it looked that way at half-time when another perfect display up-front from Michael Mifsud gave us the advantage, I was asking the team to keep it tight at the back and not conceed before the end of the half, but unfortunately Jamie Mackie got in a showed what he can do for the Green Army. I told the players to keep up the form and don't let their performance drop, and again Michael Mifsud gave the fans what they wanted to see, but unfortunately the defence dropped and let Mackie in again, all in all the rightful score-line, but I believe we could have got all 3 points.

Preston 0-1 BRIGHTON

The boys did exactly what they needed to today, I told them pre-game this was always going to be a tough fixture, but straight from the off we did look the stronger team, and Andre Ayew did what he needed early on and got us the advantage, and the team held on brilliantly, Preston have a strong attack, and the defenders have been working hard in training to improve on all aspects of their play, and that showed today, a great performance from the lads holding on to the lead for more than 80 minutes.

BRIGHTON 2-3 Sunderland

A real treat for the Seagulls fans who got to see the Black Cats come to the Withdean, a game which obviously not many expected the Albion to get any sort of result from, but fans were still optimistic, and I could hear them from the dressing room getting fired up for the match. And in the end, I could not have asked for a better performance from the lads, and abseloutely outstanding game, to go 1-0 up against a Premiership side, I was more than happy for the game to send then, and again it was Michael Mifsud, who I believe is one of the best players I've ever worked with, a real professional who has it all. But with them being a higher quality side it was always inevitable that we would slip up, and we battled brilliantly to get the second goal, again from Mifsud. The fans and myself were all anxious and hoping we could hold on for a replay, but the Premier League quality shone through and Sunderland deserved the victory in the end, but a great performance from the Albion.

BRIGHTON 3-2 Leeds

For the final game this month we welcomed our other promotion friends Leeds United, friends being used lightly though, the fans have conjoured up what you could call a small rivalry, but this is all taken in jest, but the game is still highly-anticipated by many Albion fans. The team showed what brilliant quality the coaches have taught them here, when James Tunnicliffe powered in a brilliant glancing header, things were looking up for the Albion, and Andre Ayew made the fans day even better when he scored a beautifully placed shot to give us the two goal advantage, but our defensive line dropped again and we found ourselves on level terms on 49 minutes, but one of our Chelsea loanees, Franco di Santo, made sure the Seagulls came out victors, giving Brighton the 3-2 final score-line.

August Overview

A solid first month for the team, we were winning the games we deserved to win, drawing where we deserved to draw, and occasionally our losses were also deserved, but I believe that sometimes we were indeed unlucky not to have come away with some results on the odd occasion. At the start of the season Tony Bloom asked me about our seasonal expectations, and I said I will do my best to keep the team in the league and aim for mid-table, but at the end of August we lie 4th, an abseloutely outstanding effort from the team, and I am very excited for what is to come for the rest of this season. Player of the Month for me has to be Michael Mifsud, the man has always shown what a player he is, and he has always given 110% even if we are losing, the guy is a model professional and I believe there is still a lot to come from him, he still has a few years of prime left in him, and I hope he stays on at the Albion and gives the fans what they have always wanted.

Screeenshots from all of Augusts matches:

He's on a free agent in real life too, would be great if we got him we managed to get him. :)

Mifsud would be a coup for Brighton in real life but they have Nicky Forster

Hi Kieran

I've got a Brighton save too. Not doing too bad so far, 6th after 11 games. Also snapped up Mifsud on a free at the begining of the season, think hes begining to settle now.

What match instructions do you give him to make him so successful?
