Fußball-Club St. Pauli was formed on the 15th of May, 1910. Through all its history, it could not shake its state of anonymity due to it's mediocre performances on the pitch, but the club was transformed in the mid-80s into a "Kult" club due to its location, its stadium is situated near Hamburg's famous Reeperbahn, centre of the city's night life and its red-light district. This produced alternative fan scene emerged, built around left-leaning politics, social activism and the party atmosphere of the club's matches. Supporters adopted the Jolly Rodger as their own unofficial emblem.

In the start of the new millennium, St. Pauli suffered back to back relegations to the Regionalliga Nord and was facing bankruptcy, but their unprecedented DFB cup run in the 05-06 season helped stave off administration and they were promoted back to the 2. Bundesliga the following season, After finishing second in the 2009–10 season the team secured promotion back to the 1. Bundesliga for the 2010–11 season. That season, for the first time since 1977, St Pauli defeated their bitter cross city rivals Hamburger SV away at the Volksparkstadion. However, the team finished the season last in the league going back to the 2. Bundesliga.

With another season outside the German top flight beckoning and a large debt to pay back, what does the future have in stall for the Buccaneers of the League.

On a fine summer's day in Hamburg, the St. Pauli chairman, Stefan Orth, called a press conference to announce who was going to replace the St. Pauli legend, Holger Stanislawski.

The man in question was Hashem Najem, the Kuwaiti-born German coach with no prior history in management. The 37 year old was appointed based on how he impressed the Director of Football, Helmut Schulte, with his philosophy about playing the game and running the club.

At the press conference, Najem answered questions fired at him by the press, his philosophy about playing the beautiful game was evident throughout.

"How you win is just as important as if you win or not, winning with style is what proves a teams quality, and under my reign, all St. Pauli will be aiming for is winning with flair and panache".

"Another thing I will be implementing is the emphasis on youth, I'll be improving our own youth system greatly to produce young talent that can help the club progress in the future."

This morning, no less than 8 staff members, including the assistant manager Jan-Moritz Lichte, had their contracts mutually terminated with immediate effect.

This sudden upheaval might be surprising to some but newly appointed head coach Hashem Najem believes it is necessary to have the right people behind the scenes to make a winning team.

"The previous set-up at the club did not match what I have envisioned, their departures will make way for backroom staff I feel can do a good job assisting me in turning this club into an outfit that is regularly in the Bundesliga."

It is estimated over €500,000 was spend on terminating the contracts of the current staff, while most of the staff brought in where unemployed, mostly from either Germany or the Netherlands.

The new assistant manager is rumoured to be Michael Henke, who was the assistant manager for Borussia Dortmund for 9 years before being the assistant manager at Bayern Munich for 6 years.

St. Pauli's number 9, Mahir Saglik, has suffered a broken foot and will be out for 4 to 5 months. The former Turkish youth international was taken off in the 37th minute of their home game against Duisburg after colliding with an opposition's player.

"Mahir is a top quality striker and he showed that on his debut when he scored the winning goal." Explained St. Pauli boss Hashem Najem, "The only positive we can draw is that the transfer window is still open and I'll look to get a striker in on a temporary basis to replace him".

Najem went on to bring in Mainz striker Shawn Parker on loan.

St. Pauli fans were denied a trip to face bitter rivals Hamburger SV after progressing past Regensburg coutisy of a Petar Sliskovic brace and the penalty saving heroics of Philipp Tschauner. The two sides were preliminarily draw against each other in the DFB Cup, only needing to progress to the next round to make the Hamburg derby a reality, but the 1.Bundesliga outfit HSV were not able to beat lowly Karsruhe.
