Can FM09 be launched without 'Steam'....!!??

Having no end of problems with FM09...firstly couldnt get past picking team (would crash on trying to go to game!!! Grrr)....now after uninstalling FM and Steam have reinstalled, now cant get to update!!!! Is it that steam is temperamental (as Internet)...or am i doing/done something wrong (in set up or launch)

Don't know what uniloc is but I bought the game from steam, and now play the game without starting steam by creating a shortcut to the footballmanager.exe hidden away in the "steam directory" ... if you can't find it I will post up the exact location later. I think its steamapps or something.
