Sky Sports News
REPORTER: It's that time of the year again, July 1st. All the players are back from holiday and it's only 6 weeks to the kick off for the 2008/09 season. However, a lot will be different this year, due to debt's amounting to £1Billion between Premier League teams, the FA have imposed a ban on all English clubs in the transfer market, many other countries are said to have followed suit. Therefore, there are to be no deals made that involve cash payments, whether it be upfront or through instalments, so for this first transfer window clubs are stuck with whatever team they finished the year with.
REPORTER: That's bad news for West Ham United, who have recently given Andy Burns his first management job, after Gianfranco Zola left a few weeks back. Burns could be in seriously trouble with sqaud selection, with a first team of only 19 players, and with only 3 centre forwards and very few wingers he could be playing a very defensive game in this first half of the season. Although we may see him bring some youngsters to the first team, and we all know the kinds of talent that the West Ham youth academy has produced over the years.
Club Press Conference, Manger Statement
ANDY BURNS: With this transfer embargo in place we will be relying heavily on the few players we have for most of the year, consequently, the coaching staff and I have discussed and promoted some younger players into first time roles. We respect the FA's decision to put this ban in place, and I can assure every Hammers fan that come the end of the season, the team will be stronger financially and we will still be a Premier League team. Our first challenge is to qualify into the Europa League, this is something I intend to set as my priority. Thank you all for coming.
Players Promoted:
Jack Collison
Junior Stanislas
Jordan Spence
James Tomkins
