Releasing on a free involves paying them their wages anyway so might as well not bother. And they probably won't accept mutual termination unless you deliberately upset them a lot which may damage morale. I'd recommend not giving players long term contracts unless you know you'll definitely still want them. That way you can get rid of anybody you won't need the following year at the end of each season.
