Pre-Match Odds
Everton: 4-6 (fav) Draw: 9-4 Leeds: 7-2

Murru and Brandt were both substituted during the match with Hull and maintain their places in the starting line-up today. Douglas and McCarthy come back in for Chambers and Veljkovic, both of whom drop to the bench. Reyes and Ledson continue in midfield but Slattery is left out today to make way for Tom Cleverley. The front three remain unchanged. Leeds are predicted to line-up in a 5-3-2 formation, although they usually use 4-2-3-1.

Dirty Leeds:

13’ - Brandt feeds Bamford on the right side of the penalty area during a sweeping counter attacking move by Everton. Bamford switches the ball to the left of the area for Patrick Roberts who then stands a cross up to the far post. Cooper’s defensive header is controlled on the chest by Roberts and his shot is well saved by Silvestri, diving low to his left.

22’ - Lorenzo Reyes hits a crossfield pass to Murru on the left wing and from level with the edge of the penalty area he sends a cross into the box. Roberts flicks it on to the far post and from 6 yards out Julian Brandt must score - only for the ball to hit the post, with Silvestri scrambling to get across. A let off for Leeds!

36’ - Jason McCarthy wins a challenge with Clucas on the halfway line and passes forward to Cleverley in the middle of the Leeds half. He passes to Murru on the left and the full back moves out wider before delivering a high cross to the back post area. Julian BRANDT gets above his marker and sends a powerful header inside the right hand post. 1-0 to the home side.

38’ - Douglas arrives late into the box to volley over the bar from a left wing cross by Roberts.

45’+2 - Ledson and Cleverley create an opening for Roberts to skip past Byram on the left side of the penalty area and cross to the middle. Sabaly inadvertently heads towards his own goal from close range but Silvestri somehow manages to keep it out with an acrobatic save and Cooper hacks it clear.

HT - We have totally dominated the first half and should be more than one goal to the good. Looking at the formations prior to the match, I was concerned that our front man might become isolated and bogged down among those six centrally positioned Leeds players. But we have moved forward by hitting crossfield balls and exploiting the space behind the wing backs. The only action in and around the area you’d usually expect to find a No.10 has been us pressing Leeds back into their own area and probing for an opportunity to play someone in on goal. Tom Cleverley has picked up a knock to his head, but he’s okay to carry on for now.

59’ - A pass from Jonny Williams puts Sabaly away down the left hand side for Leeds. He plays it low to the edge of the 6 yard box but the shot by Clucas is blocked by Lascelles. Sabaly gets it back and shoots right footed from about 15 yards, but Boyko punches the ball clear.

64’ - A clumsy mistake by Jason McCarthy allows Stuart Dallas through on goal but he slices his shot wide to the right.

76’ - A short passing move from the left involving Murru, Roberts, Bamford and Boateng ends with a 20 yard strike from Douglas being well saved by Silvestri, diving low to his right to catch the ball close to his right hand post.

79’ - Roberts is tripped by Byram on the left wing, but Murru picks up the loose ball to continue the Everton attack. His pass infield finds Kevin-Prince Boateng and the Ghanaian’s shot stings the palms of Silvestri who does well to parry it away.

82’ - Jack Colback sends over an in-swinging corner from the right wing. McCarthy gets his head to it and sends the ball to Jamaal Lascelles whose header at goal hits the upright and bounces out for a goal kick.

83’ - Patrick Roberts bursts away from Sam Byram on the left wing. Moat gives chance but can’t catch him and his low cross to the near post area is flicked gaolbird by Andone but Silvestri is equal to it.

90’ - Andone forces a save from Silvestri with an angled shot from 12 yards after a neat passing move between him, Colback and Brandt.

90’+1 - Portillo finds Jones inside the centre circle and his straight forward pass drops kindly for Stuart Dallas who controls it and evades McCarthy long enough to shoot from 20 yards, skimming the top of the crossbar.

90’+3 - With Everton defending for our lives and Leeds peppering high balls into our area, it drops for Portillo to shoot first time but his effort is wide of the left hand post.

We should have scored more than just the one goal but in the end we could easily have conceded and dropped two points, so I’m happy to be claiming all three. We posed a threat on the wings throughout the match, particularly on the left hand side where Murru and Roberts had Byram on toast and although Leeds got through our defence a couple of times, they lacked the composure to capitalise.

CHAMPIONSHIP - FULL CLASSIFIED CHECK - MATCHDAY 10

Brentford's 3-2 win at the DW Stadium has knocked Wigan Athletic off top spot and our 1-0 defeat of Leeds United takes us into 1st place. The Bees' Spanish playmaker Jota scored what proved to be the winning goal. Bolton Wanderers are in 5th after a goalless draw at home to Sunderland. Bradford City's early form seems to be deserting them now, their 2-0 reverse at home to Hull City is their second consecutive defeat. Hull's Cristian Herrera scored their second goal. At the bottom of the table, Watford make it back-to-back wins with a 4-0 success at Huddersfield Town in which all four goals came in the first 45 minutes. Robert Snodgrass was among the scorers for the visitors. Fans of Shrewsbury Town and AFC Bournemouth were treated to a 6-goal thriller at The Greenhous Meadow, the former Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater among the scorers for The Cherries in the 3-3 draw.

TOFFEES REVIEW

We have now played 10 matches in the Championship, so this is a good time to take stock and review the season so far - the performances of the players, the effectiveness of our tactics and look for any indications as to what changes I should make to ensure even better results, hereafter.

View attachment 145826
DENYS BOYKO
Goalkeeper

Played: 12; Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.93

Has settled in very well, playing all 12 matches for us so far, including two in the Capital One Cup. Ranks top of the clean sheets list for the Championship and has been equal to most of what has been asked of him.

View attachment 145825
CALUM CHAMBERS
Right Back

Played: 7; Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 1; Average Rating: 7.93

Defensively sound and, despite not registering any assists as yet, contributes to our right wing attacking play by offering additional width and pace going forward. One of the most consistent performers in the squad but still has to accept being rotated out every few matches.

View attachment 145824
DOUGLAS
Right Back

Played: 5(1); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 1; Average Rating: 7.68

Has to share the right back berth with Calum Chambers, rotating into the team when the former Arsenal man is tired or unavailable. Does the job well enough and similarly enough to Chambers that we don’t suffer any loss for having Douglas in the team instead. Proving to be a bargain at just £1.7 million.

View attachment 145823
JASON McCARTHY
Centre Back

Played: 6(2); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.77
Has done well in terms of headers and tackles won, but the 22 year-old’s general performances have not reached the required standards so far. Can be isolated and picked off by fast forwards and has been prone to occasional mistakes. Will need to improve.

View attachment 145822
MILOS VELJKOVIC
Centre Back

Played: 6(2); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 7.12
New to the squad this season and given the captain’s armband, Veljkovic has had a lot to cope with and has done well enough to justify his continued selection. A strong tackler and the best passer among our central defenders. If he maintains his current form until the end of the season, I will be satisfied.

View attachment 145821
JAMAAL LASCELLES
Centre Back

Played: 9(2); Goals: 1; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 7.15
More consistent performances have edged Lascelles ahead of McCarthy in the pecking order and is now my preferred partner for Veljkovic at the heart of our defence. Reads the game well and ranks high for winning headers and tackles, as you would hope.

View attachment 145820
LEIGHTON BAINES
Left Back

Played: 4; Goals: 0; Assists: 2; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 7.90
Was playing very well and belied any concerns about his advancing years with some excellent displays early in the season, but his knee ligament injury has limited his involvement and continues to keep him out. The impressive performances of Nicola Murru in the meantime will bring his first choice status into question.

View attachment 145819
NICOLA MURRU
Left Back

Played: 8(1); Goals: 0; Assists: 2; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 7.81
Stepped up in the enforced absence of Leighton Baines to stake a strong claim for the left back berth. Combines effectively with Patrick Roberts and provides additional momentum to attacking moves with his overlapping runs and accurate crosses. Secure defensively and among the most consistent players in the squad.

View attachment 145818
LORENZO REYES
Defensive Midfielder

Played: 11; Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.98
An efficient tackler and passer of the ball and erstwhile collector of yellow cards - 6 for the season, so far. Seems to be doing to the job that I have asked of him effectively enough but rarely scores high in his match performance ratings. Will face increased competition when Oscar Lewicki returns to full fitness.

View attachment 145817
JACK COLBACK
Defensive Midfielder / Left Back

Played: 1(5); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.85
Match ratings can be deceiving for players who have made mostly substitute appearances but scores 84% for both passing and tackling, so like Reyes he is doing what I want him to do. As a utility player, he will be named on the bench more often than in the starting XI so I just need him to be able to provide cover and carry on doing a steady job when asked.

View attachment 145816
RYAN LEDSON
Deep Lying Playmaker / Advanced Playmaker

Played: 8(1); Goals: 1; Assists: 1; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 7.86
I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality and consistency of Ledson’s performances in the centre of midfield, which have demonstrated that after seasons of going out on loan he is now ready to be an Everton player. A creative influence who uses the wings intelligently and isn’t afraid to shoot. Has settled down since Burnley’s interest in him has passed. Suffers a little from low stamina, though, so I will need him to work on that in training.

View attachment 145815
CALLUM SLATTERY
Deep Lying Playmaker / Roaming Playmaker

Played: 3(1); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 7.33
Kept out by injury to begin with and has come into the team during our period of improved performances. Hasn’t quite hit the heights he achieved at Sheffield Wednesday last season but works well alongside Ledson and Reyes and is a specialist at hitting crossfield passes that make the most of our impressive wing players. The best is yet to come from this young man.

View attachment 145814
TOM CLEVERLEY
Deep Lying Playmaker / Advanced Playmaker

Played: 7(1); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 7.28
Has done very well when called upon and seems to be content being rotated in and out of the side. Not as strong a tackler as Slattery but completes a higher percentage of passes. Performing his role in the squad quite efficiently and provides that little bit more experience.

View attachment 145813
JULIAN BRANDT
Right Winger

Played: 12; Goals: 7; Assists: 3; Man of the Match: 3; Average Rating: 7.99
A livewire right winger who is currently leading the club’s scoring chart with 7 goals. Excellent at taking on a lone full back but has had to contend with teams doubling-up on him recently which has reduced his effectiveness as a creative force but he still poses a threat when getting on the end of crosses from the opposite flank. His versatility is also useful because it allows me to rest other players and bring others in on the right hand side when I need to. Has already done enough this season to encourage me to consider signing him on a permanent deal from Bayer Leverkusen, if we get promoted next season.

View attachment 145812
AARON LENNON
Right Winger

Played: 1(1); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: -
Enduring a frustrating 2018/19 season so far, due to repeated injury, while Brandt thrives in his absence. At 31, he’s going to need to prove himself this season in order to be part of the Premier League campaign that I hope we’ll be waging next year, so faces a fight for his Everton future.

View attachment 145811
PATRICK ROBERTS
Left Winger

Played: 9; Goals: 3; Assists: 9; Man of the Match: 4; Average Rating: 8.29
Best player in the squad on the strength of our first 10 games and an excellent attacking outlet that offers pace, dribbling and crossing abilities that provide goalscoring chances both for himself and his team-mates. I was disappointed not to sign Rob Hall from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer because he had done the job very well for me last season, but Roberts is quicker and more direct. I will try to get him back to Goodison Park next season, either permanently or on loan. He’s going to be a big star for England, one day. I just hope he stays clear of injury this season so we can keep getting the most from him.

View attachment 145810
ARNAUD LUSAMBA
Right Winger / Shadow Striker / Inside Forward_Left

Played: 5(3); Goals: 1; Assists: 1; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.99
A utility attacker who enables me to rest other players when necessary and can fill the gaps caused by injuries and suspensions. Has the potential to become a very good player so to have picked him up on a free transfer from Nancy was a steal. Has an important role to play for us this season and will weigh in with a few goals here and there.

View attachment 145809
KEVIN-PRINCE BOATENG
Shadow Striker / Advanced Playmaker

Played: 3(5); Goals: 0; Assists: 1; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.86
Struggled to get into the team after being injured in pre-season. When I brought him into Southampton a few seasons ago, he was a beast in the Shadow Striker position, typically starting moves inside his own half and then finishing them off with his head inside the opposition penalty area. Unfortunately, despite the drop down to the Championship, it looks as though time and age have caught up with Boateng and he is nowhere near as effective in that role. He can still offer something in the midfield of our 4-3-3 formation, but there is stiff competition for places there. Unless he vastly improves between now and the end of the season, I think I will be cutting his two year deal short come the summer.

View attachment 145808
PATRICK BAMFORD
Complete Forward

Played: 4(4); Goals: 6; Assists: 1; Man of the Match: 1; Average Rating: 7.47
Was originally being rotated into the side but has emerged as the most potent goal threat among our strikers and has now established himself as my first choice. At 6’2” he is decent in the air but more effective on the ground where his pace and composure allow him to make the most of his finishing ability.

View attachment 145807
CAULEY WOODROW
Deep Lying Forward

Played: 8; Goals: 2; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.81
The £16 million signing from Fulham was my most expensive acquisition of the summer and, sadly, is proving to be my worst. Has struggled to contribute effectively to build-up play and rarely gets on the end of attacking moves as I would like him to. It could be that I haven’t used him to his strengths, so I will persevere, but I will need to see better results from him this season if I am to take him (hopefully) into the Premier League.

View attachment 145806
FLORIN ANDONE
Complete Forward

Played: 0(4); Goals: 0; Assists: 0; Man of the Match: 0; Average Rating: 6.73
Limited to substitute appearances so far and hasn’t done anything to enshrine his place in the starting line-up, but will get his chance when I have him back to full fitness as I attempt to solve the issue caused by Woodrow’s poor performances. May yet establish himself as an Everton player.

YET TO FEATURE...
View attachment 145805
FEDERICO MARCHETTI
Goalkeeper

The 35 year-old keeper is seeing out the last year of his contract by providing cover to Denys Boyko. Fingers crossed, I won’t need to play him at all this season. What if his hair were to fall infront of his eyes?!

View attachment 145804
MASON HOLGATE
Centre Back

I thought I would be integrating him into the team about now, but the need to maintain the match fitness of the three central defenders ahead of him in the pecking order has reduced his action to the U21s. About to go out on loan for 3 months.

View attachment 145803
PHIL JAGIELKA
Centre Back

The 36 year-old is another who is just seeing out his contract with us this season. May have some limited involvement when injuries or suspensions strike, but won’t get a run in the team.

View attachment 145802
OSCAR LEWICKI
Defensive Midfielder

Has struggled to get back to full fitness after his sprained ankle. I will have to make a concerted effort to get him through some U21 matches and him ready for first team action. Should be good enough to challenge Lorenzo Reyes and Jack Colback for the starting spot in the DM position.

View attachment 145801
ALI COOTE
Left Winger

Injury has kept him out since pre-season but his fitness is improving and he should be ready to participate in first team action soon.

View attachment 145800
SAM GALLAGHER
Target Man

Another who is struggling to get over recent injury, I have dropped him to the U21 squad for now on the advice of my Assistant, Steve Round. Picked up on a free from Southampton in the summer and if he can’t get back to full fitness and make an impact in the Championship with us this season, he will find himself surplus to requirements at Goodison Park, as well.

PLAYER STATS

Julian Brandt is joint 2nd top goalscorer in the Championship at the moment, on 6 goals. Patrick Bamford has only just become a regular starter and has 4 to his name, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him challenging for the top spot before long. In the Average Rating stats, we have 4 of the top 5 players with Roberts, Brandt, Murru and Ledson. Blackburn Rovers, who are currently in 10th position, are also well represented in the top 20.

TACTICS

The Team Report says that we usually play 4-4-2 but that's not true - we haven't played that formation at all since I have been here. Maybe it includes matches under my predecessor. 4-4-1-1 has been identified as our most successful formation but having seen Boateng struggle in the Shadow Striker role and Cauley Woodrow failing to set the world alight as a Deep Lying Forward, I now prefer the 4-3-3 formation for this group of players which brings the best out of the two wingers and allows our three man central midfield to control most matches.

The overlapping left back is a key feature to my tactics (comes from years of watching my football at St. Mary's stadium: Wayne Bridge, Gareth Bale, Luke Shaw, Ryan Bertrand et al - even Andrew Surman, for a while) and as one who used to favour the Asymmetric system I like to have the left sided players combining differently to the right sided players - I have a theory that this staggered approach helps with counter attacks, particularly those that begin on the right and can then be switched to the left where two players are making themselves available. I call it a theory, it just based on watching matches in the Comprehensive view and seeing that play out.

I will still use the 4-4-1-1 formation from time-to-time, but I'm considering replacing the 4-2-3-1 with a 4-4-2 so I can get Cauley Woodrow and Patrick Bamford to work together up top. Woodrow tends to win a lot of knock ons but when he's up top on his own, they just bounce around until a defender takes possession. But you have to be careful when you go to a four man midfield that you don't concede too much possession to the opposition, so I'll have to pick my moments to play that formation. Having different formations keeps the opposition guessing and also helps to rest and rotate players to keep your squad as match fit as possible. But tinker too much and you can become unstuck, as I did against Sunderland in the Capital One Cup.

Having spent so much on Cauley Woodrow, I'm determined to get the best out of him but he has not been good enough so far. Deep Lying Forward is his best position and he represents well in all of the stats relevant to that position. His preferred moves are Shoots With Power, Plays With Back to Goal and Plays One-Twos. Julian Brandt also favours One-Twos and I can train Patrick Bamford to do likewise, which will hopefully result in all three players operating to their strengths.

Woodrow doesn't win as many headers as I thought he would, so I will have to instruct the team to whip crosses towards him for a while and see if that has any impact. When Bamford plays up top on his own, I switch him to Complete Forward, which is his preferred role. As a Deep Lying Forward, Woodrow doesn't get into shooting positions as often and he also isn't as skilled as Bamford at running at teams and creating space for himself, which is why Bamford's stats report that he has a much higher shots per match ratio. If I can get both of them in the team at once and working effectively together, it should benefit both players. Woodrow is only 23, too, so if I can make him operate effectively he can be a part of the squad for several years to come.

OWLS LOOKING FOR A NEW MANAGER
Sheffield Wednesday are again without a manager after sacking Nigel Pearson, who took over from me when I resigned the Hillsborough hotseat in January. They have recorded 7 draws but no wins from their first 10 matches, leaving them in the relegation zone. Pearson is the first managerial casualty in the Championship this season. Neil Lennon, currently managing Walsall in League One, has declared his interest in the vacancy.

TOFFEE NEWS IN BRIEF...

Mason Holgate goes to Queen's Park Rangers for a 3-month loan. He turned down offers from Birmingham City and Brighton & Hove Albion. I turned down an offer from Wigan Athletic who are among our rivals at the top of the Championship. That leaves me with Jamaal Lascelles, Milos Veljkovic and the underperforming Jason McCarthy being covered by Phil Jagielka and, potentially, Calum Chambers who can shift from right back if required. We also have Daniel Herbert, the New Zealander in our U21 squad who can play left back or centre back. He's 6'2" so meets the minimum height requirement, at least!

An international break will follow our next match against Blackburn Rovers. I'm hoping that Oscar Lewicki will return from his excursion with the Swedish squad in a match fit state, ready to make his full debut for Everton. Florin Andone, meanwhile, has been dropped by Romania due to his lack of action so far this season. He has already been in my office demanding for first team football and I can see I'm going to have problems with him for a while yet.

BLACKBURN ROVERS vs EVERTON
SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Ewood Park, Blackburn. Att: 19,641.

View attachment 145755 vs View attachment 145754

Pre-Match Odds
Blackburn: 3-1 Draw: 2-1 Everton: 4-5 (fav)

Chambers and Veljkovic return to the back four in place of Douglas and McCarthy. Jack Colback gets a rare start ahead of Lorenzo Reyes, really just to see if he can do any better in the DM role than the Chilean. The injured Tom Cleverley is replaced by Callum Slattery in midfield. Patrick Roberts is tired so his place on the left wing goes to Ali Coote, who is returning from injury to make his first appearance of the season. Bamford continues upfront. Cauley Woodrow is left out again, in favour of Florin Andone.

"Do or do not. There is no try":

8’ - Blackburn get the ball into the Everton net when Danny Guthrie lofts a pass from midfield over Murru and into the path of Ante Rebic, but the Croatian is deemed to be offside before he strikes past Denys Boyko. Then Duffy’s excellent last ditch sliding tackle inside the Rovers penalty area prevents Bamford from taking aim after Julian Brandt picked out his team mate with an angled pass from deep on the right.

19’ - Ante Rebic plays a one-two with Danny Guthrie to get into the left side of the Everton penalty area and then draws a foul from Jack Colback for a Blackburn Rovers penalty. Huyga Tanner strikes the spot kick fiercely with his right foot, sending it straight down the middle. It smashes against the front of the crossbar and rebounds past him, allowing Slattery to hook it away.

26’ - Chambers finds Brandt on the right wing and the German winger escapes Barlocco’s rash lunge to attack the space now opened up in the Rovers left back position. Brandt pauses to wait for support and then skips around another Barlocco slide before pulling it back to Ryan Ledson to the right of the penalty spot. Jason Steele parries Ledson’s right foot volley wide for a corner.

35’ - Rovers left back Barlocco receives a yellow card, which is no surprise given what he has tried to do to Julian Brandt on two occasions. We could exploit a weakness on that side.

HT - We have ridden our luck in the first half and on a couple of occasions early one, low crosses from Brandt from the right wing found nobody far enough forward to attack the ball. Ali Coote has been anonymous on the left wing but to be fair to him he came into this game just shy of match fitness, so I may have to be patient with him. We’ve had more possession but Blackburn have managed more shots. We’re doing better in the air. Jack Colback’s rating is 7.0 at the break, so he’s not unduly affected by having given away that penalty - the fact that it wasn’t scored probably helps!

53’ - Barlocco trips Brandt about 25 yards out, to the left of the D. The Blackburn left back is let off by the referee but must surely be skating on thin ice now. Jack Colback’s left footed strike hits the defensive ball but the former Sunderland man retrieves the ball on the left wing and sends a high cross towards the back post. Barlocco hooks the ball away over his right shoulder from 3 yards out but it falls to Julian BRANDT who side-steps Tanner and Hanley before firing into the far top corner with the goalkeeper beaten all ends up. 0-1 to the league leaders.

60’ - With Blackburn having made all three substitutions and left Luca Barlocco on the pitch, I decide to give him a new problem to deal with in the form of the fresh legs of Arnaud Lusamba, moving Brandt to the left wing to play as an Inside Forward, with Ali Coote making way.

61’ - A straight forward pass from Colback from within the centre circle gets Bamford in on goal just left of centre, but Steele blocks the shot and the ball is cleared.

74’ - Steele makes a flying save to his right to deny a Jamaal Lascelles header from Colback’s left wing corner.

75’ - Murru throws the ball to Brandt, outside the area on the left hand side. He turns Tanner and runs at Smith inside the box and shoots right footed but narrowly wide of the near post.

82’ - A long throw from the left by Marshall causes chaos in the Everton penalty area as Boyko comes for it but Rebic wins the header infront of the Toffees keeper. It falls to Duffy on the back post with the goalkeeper stranded but Nicola Murru blocks the shot and then also gets in the way of Tanner’s follow-up shot. When Orchi tries to convert Blackburn’s third attempt, he finds Boyko back in position and able to make the catch.

85’ - Jason Steele throws the ball out but Slattery wins the header in midfield and finds Andone. The Romanian picks out Lusamba on the right who gets in behind Barlocco and runs at Orchi, progressing into the penalty area before letting fly with a placed shot that strikes the right hand post. Barlocco clears the rebound into touch.

89’ - With Everton now in defensive mode to see out the match, Blackburn get on the front foot and Jacobs picks out Barlocco on the left wing, who manages to stay onside and lay the ball off to Rebic on the edge of the area. The Croatian, who I came close to signing during the summer when he was a free agent, rushes his left foot shot with Chambers and Slattery closing him down and it flies wide of the left hand post.

90’+2 - with just 12 seconds left on the clock, Blackburn counter attack and Smith sends a cross into the heart of the Everton penalty area from deep on the right. Lascelles volleys it into row Z with his left foot, with Tanner lurking behind him. As Marshall winds up another long throw, I shout from the touchline to tell the players to concentrate and Callum Slattery gets his head to the ball - which is the referee’s signal to blow for full-time. Another 1-0 win to consolidate our position at the top of the Championship table.

A hard fought victory against a capable Blackburn side on their own turf. We missed Roberts, as we knew we would, but he can’t play every match and we coped mainly by switching the focus of our attack to the right wing (not instructed by me, just the way the match played out). Both teams had 12 shots each but Rovers only managed one on target and although they had quite a physical presence during set piece routines, we matched them blow-for-blow and kept that all important clean sheet.

CHAMPIONSHIP - FULL CLASSIFIED CHECK - MATCHDAY 11

A Sam Vokes winner secures all three points for Wigan Athletic at Vicarage Road, putting an end to Watford’s recent revival. 3rd place Brentford are held 0-0 at home by Millwall who are now 5th. Rotherham United’s 2-0 win at home to Huddersfield Town has them in 4th position, Shaquile Coulthirst on target once again for The Millers. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Elvis Manu scores all three in their 3-0 triumph over Shrewsbury Town at the Amex Stadium. Bristol City are bottom of the pile after a 2-0 defeat at AFC Bournemouth. The Cherries’ 6’7” defender Dan Burn scored their second goal.

CHAMPIONSHIP CHATTER
Paul Scholes becomes the second managerial casualty of the Championship season, getting sacked by West Bromwich Albion with the team in the relegation zone with just 9 points from 11 games. Scholes worked for me as a coach at Southampton and was in the job at The Hawthorns for 11 months. Nigel Pearson, recently sacked by Sheffield Wednesday, is among the frontrunners to replace the former Manchester United player.

TOFFEE NEWS IN BRIEF...
Our young winger Ali Coote suffers a recurrence of his knee ligament injury while on international duty with Scotland U21s in a match against their Albanian counterparts. He will be out of action for two months and with rehabilitation, it will take at least three months to get him ready for first team action again. Callum Slattery starred in England U21s 3-0 defeat of Georgia U21s. Patrick Roberts also featured in the match. Calum Chambers represented the senior team, for 8 minutes at least, as a late sub in the 1-1 friendly draw with Argentina at Wembley. It was Chambers’ 4th England cap.

Oscar Lewicki comes to me complaining about his lack of first team football (he’s supposed to be on international duty so I guess he did it by phone). He has been crocked since pre-season and is only just approaching full fitness now, having just played for an hour for Sweden against France. I like the fact that he’s keen to play, but you can’t play on crutches! Show a bit of patience, Oscar! I want you to play in the first team, too - that’s why I spent £2.5 million to get you here from Malmo. Leighton Baines is ready to return to training but I’m going to have to nurse him back to full fitness before he can start challenging Nicola Murru for the left back spot, again.

Bill Kenwright has been keen to sell Everton Football Club since before I arrived and there was a bid during the close season that temporarily forced me to suspend my transfer dealings. That bid didn’t go through in the end but there is new interest from a consortium that features a former professional footballer, so we could be in for a new chairman soon. Hopefully they will decide to retain my services as manager, unlike the board that came in at Southampton when I was there. I’m also wary that my transfer kitty war chest of £44.6 million might be swallowed up as part of the takeover deal, either as an asset that Mr. Kenwright will take with him or as revenue that the owners might be inclined to take out of the club.

Florin Andone scores both goals for Everton U21s in their 2-1 victory away to Sunderland U21s. Tom Cleverley and Leighton Baines also played in the match. We’re 5th in the U21s Group 1 North table.

Patrick Roberts hits a hat-trick against Liechtenstein U21s as the England U21s complete their successful European Championship qualifying campaign with a 4-0 victory over the Group 6 whipping boys, to top the group with 26 points from 10 matches. Denmark, Croatia, Ireland and Georgia where the other teams in the group. Callum Slattery also performs well in the match. Oscar Lewicki played the full 90 minutes with no problems in Sweden’s 1-0 win over Greece and Patrick Bamford was on target for Republic of Ireland in a 3-0 defeat of Russia. The goal has triggered a £1.9 million payment to Chelsea due to an international milestone that formed part of his transfer deal last year. Callum Slattery pulled up in training with a hamstring injury that will keep him out for a month. That’s annoying because he and Ryan Ledson had just begun to strike up an understanding in central midfield, but as Lewicki returns, Slattery drops out for a while and I have the same total number of players to deal with.

Pre-Match Odds

Forgot to check, sorry!

The goalkeeper and back four are unchanged from the win at Blackburn two weeks ago. Lorenzo Reyes returns to replace Jack Colback in the DM role. Oscar Lewicki returns form injury to make his Everton debut, operating as a Ball Winning Midfielder_Support in the M(C) position. Patrick Roberts returns, buoyed by his recent hat-trick for the England U21s. Patrick Bamford was tired when he returned from international duty so Florin Andone will start upfront and Cauley Woodrow is on the bench.

And if you know your history, it's enough to make your heart go woah-oh-oh-oh:

18’ - A high cross from deep by Chery loops over Boyko but Milos Veljkovic is back to head clear over his own crossbar.

26’ - Nicola Murru’s throw finds Roberts 30 yards out on the left wing. He sends a cross over to the far post and Calum Chambers heads at goal from the edge of the 6 yard box, but Yoel tips the ball over the bar.

41’ - Julian Brandt moves infield, taking on three QPR players before laying the ball off to Florin Andone to shoot from just outside the D. Yoel gets down to push the shot wide of his left hand post.

HT - We have had the better chances but QPR are matching us in terms of performance and possession. We have struggled to get the ball wide to attack their full backs and the middle of the park is quite congested most of the time.

53’ - Matt Phillips receives the ball on the right for QPR, close to the Everton corner flag. He shifts the ball to his left foot and centres for Dunk to head goalward from within a crowded 6 yard box but the ball loops over.

59’ - Brandt almost flukes a goal from the right wing cross that Yoel has to push over the bar. Roberts takes the corner from the right and Milos Veljkovic heads wide of the near post.

61’ - QPR skipper Daniel Toszer strikes a 30 yard free-kick, left footed, at the top left corner but Boyko does well to repel the shot.

86’ - Substitute Cameron Jerome turns Colback on the corner of the penalty area to move from left to centre before shooting low from 18 yards to force a save from Boyko.

At times, it was like we were playing against a solid brick wall. We couldn’t get around, through, over or under the QPR defence which was packed in their own third of the pitch whenever we had attacking possession and we lacked the energy and verve that our wingers have been providing recently. Florin Andone failed to make much of an impression and Cauley Woodrow also floundered when he came on for the last 15 minutes. Roberts was also subdued on the left wing and picked up a yellow card.

CHAMPIONSHIP - FULL CLASSIFIED CHECK - MATCHDAY 12

We dropped two points today and allowed Wigan Athletic and Millwall to close the gap on us, but we remain top thanks to our superior goal difference. An Adam Le Fondre penalty helped Wigan to win by the odd goal in five at home to Rotherham United. Millwall are in 3rd after beating Watford 2-0 at The New Den. Rob Hall scored two in Sheffield Wednesday's 3-1 away win at Shrewsbury Town to lift the Owls clear of the relegation zone. AFC Bournemouth's 4-3 home win over Birmingham City will relieve some of the pressure mounting on their manager, Chris Powell.

TOFFEE HALL...?
Sheffield Wednesday's Rob Hall is attracting attention with his fine performances and with Patrick Roberts now showing signs of fatigue, I'm wondering whether Hall - who turned 25 in the last few days - might reconsider the possibility of a move to Goodison Park. He turned me down during the summer, saying that he wasn't interested in discussing terms even after his club had accepted a bid of around £11.5 million. But now that the season is well under way and it's clear that we are challenging for the Championship title while the Owls are currently in the relegation battle, I hope he will see Everton as his passage to the Premier League. If he does come to us, I will be able to rotate him and Roberts on the left wing without affecting our preferred style of play. He has a £12 million release clause in his contract, which he signed when I was his manager at Wednesday. I will obviously have to wait until the January transfer window to find out whether he will come to us, but watch this space...

Pre-Match Odds
Brentford: 11-5 Draw: 11-5 Everton: Evens (fav)

Just two changes from the side that drew with QPR during the week for this visit to 4th placed Brentford. Patrick Roberts is rested, providing Arnaud Lusamba with an opportunity on the left wing as an Inside Forward. Patrick Bamford returns upfront, with Florin Andone dropping to the bench. Cauley Woodrow is left out, again.

It was called Griffin Park the last time I went there (and Sophie Dahl almost got me killed):

2’ - Lorenzo Reyes shoots narrowly wide to the right from a half cleared corner.

10’ - From the right corner of the penalty area, Lusamba passes to Reyes in a central position, 25 yards out. Bamford receives the ball from the Chilean just inside the area and hits a shot on the turn which Wayne Hennessey pushes wide for a corner. The first attempt is knocked behind again but from the second corner, Lusamba’s cross is headed wide at the near post by Veljkovic.

13’ - Hunt beats Bamford in the air and prevents the Irish striker from putting the finishing touch to a right wing move that resulted in a cross from Chambers. Ledson wins the second ball just outside the area and Julian Brandt controls the ball, turns away from Bjelland and shoots from 12 yards but Hennessey pushes the ball wide.

14’ - From Ledson’s pass, Bamford runs at the Brentford defence through the centre before playing Lusamba in to his left. The young Frenchman gets in behind Hunt and shoots across goal from 8 yards but the ball goes wide of the far post with Hennessey beaten.

19’ - Ledson plays Chambers in by the right wing corner flag and the full back’s low cross picks out Bamford inside the 6 yard box, to the right of the goal. He controls and shoots but Bubnjic blocks for a corner. The resulting corner from Lusamba leads to a goalmouth scramble but Brentford manage to scrape the ball clear. We need to make this dominance count.

26’ - Bjelland heads away another Everton corner and Oscar Lewicki heads it down for Ledson to shoot through a crowd of players but Hunt makes the block to steer the ball out for another corner.

32’ - Bamford intercepts a pass in the centre circle and runs at the Brentford defence, forcing them back into their own penalty area by positioning himself to the left of the box. He crosses to the back post where Ryan Ledson climbs above two defenders to head back across goal from 6 yards but cannot find the target.

34’ - Bamford controls Lewicki’s pass on his chest in the middle of the opposition half and spreads the play to Calum Chambers on the right wing. The England full back advances 15 yards and then cuts infield, taking on Svendsen to get into the penalty area. His short pass is struck first time by Bamford but Hennessey gets everything behind it on his goal line.

36’ - Wayne Hennessey is called into action again, this time to deny Julian Brandt who slides to connect, close to the penalty spot, to Lusamba’s right wing free-kick. The Welsh goalkeeper gets down smartly to his left to make the save.

44’ - Chambers and Bamford link up again and the striker’s shot from the right flashes across the goal and wide of the far post.

45’ - Woods plays a short through ball into a busy Everton penalty area and Veljkovic misses the interception to allow Alhaji to shoot from point blank range. Boyko stands up to it and blocks the shot - the rebound is fired wide from a tight angle by Alan Judge, who has been carrying a knock for about 25 minutes.

HT - We have had 60% possession and taken 12 shots, 3 of them on target. Brentford - who are the home side, today - have managed only 4, and just 1 on target. They are defending deep but we are getting in amongst them and creating chances. He have to make them count in the second half. I tell the players to keep it up and the result will come.

50’ - Arnaud Lusamba plays a one-two with Bamford on the edge of the area and passes out wide to Nicola Murru. The Italian left back fulfils his brief of getting to the byline and floating a cross to the far post where Julian BRANDT arrives to score from 4 yards. A well deserved goal for Everton. 0-1.

57’ - Brandt retrieves the ball after a Chambers cross is headed clear to the left wing and returns a bullet cross that Lusamba heads towards goal from the penalty spot, but Hennessey is equal to it.

87’ - A foul by Igor Bubnjic on substitute Florin Andone in midfield draws a yellow card and gives me the opportunity to instruct my players to go into defensive lockdown mode: Defensive, Structured, Stick to Positions; I switch Murru from Attack to Support and tell Lewicki to play defensively, and I shout from the touchline to tell them to concentrate.

We had to work hard for it but we have taken all three points away from home against one of our promotion and title rivals, so I have to be satisfied with the result. But we laboured at times and were wasteful with some of our finishing. Our full backs excelled again; Chambers was a constant supplier of crosses from the right hand side and Murru created the all important breakthrough chance for Julian Brandt.

CHAMPIONSHIP - FULL CLASSIFIED CHECK - MATCHDAY 13

Managerless West Bromwich Albion beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 at The Hawthorns, meaning that we open up a 3 point gap at the top of the table. The clean sheet we achieved at Brentford is our sixth consecutive in the Championship; we have not conceded a single goal in 605 minutes of league football. We have had a settled back four throughout that run of Chambers, Lascelles, Veljkovic and Murru - the 1-0 win against Leeds was the only game in which the selection deviated, with Douglas and McCarthy in for Chambers and Veljkovic.

Elsewhere, Millwall move into 2nd place with a 2-0 away win at Rotherham United. Souleymane Doukara's second hat-trick of the season fires Leeds United into 4th position, inspiring them to a 4-1 victory at home to Derby County. The Rams' Bradley Johnson was sent off against his former club in that match. Watford went down 4-1 at home to Fulham and remain in the relegation zone.

TOFFEE NEWS IN BRIEF...
Our Brazilian right back Douglas, signed from West Ham United on the eve of the new season, came to my office today to complain about his lack of first team football. I simply asserted that Calum Chambers is playing too well to drop him at the moment and Douglas just shrugged his shoulders and accepted that point of view. I’m sure I haven’t heard the last of this one, though.

The pre-match press conference for our next match at home to Watford centres around how we intend to cope with Kenny Jackett’s long ball style. Shrewsbury beat us playing that way earlier in the season, so it looks like we could be up for another scrap in this one. Watford are in 23rd place in the league, though, and the Scouting Report identifies that they are prone to conceding goals during the middle 30 minute period of matches.

Pre-Match Odds
Everton: 4-7 (fav) Draw: 5-2 Watford: 4-1

The defence is unchanged again as we attempt to extend our long run of clean sheets. Oscar Lewicki is repositioned into the DM slot, to operate as a Ball Winning Midfielder with Tom Cleverley coming into the side to play as a Deep Lying Playmaker alongside Ryan Ledson. Lorenzo Reyes moves to the bench. Patrick Roberts returns on the left wing and Florin Andone gets the nod ahead of Patrick Bamford up top; the Romanian striker is still looking for his first Everton goal.

A repeat of the 1984 FA Cup Final:

3’ - Nicola Murru plays Roberts into the penalty area on the left. He dances through three Watford defenders and shoots right footed from the left corner of the 6 yard box, but the ball hits the left hand post and is scrambled away.

4’ - Florin Andone heads Murru’s throw back to him on the left wing and the full back passes to Roberts on the edge of the penalty area. His cross is met on the edge of the yard box by the head of a jumping Julian Brandt, but Masip acrobatically tips the ball over the bar. A bright start from Everton.

12’ - Jamaal Lascelles heads away from the edge of the penalty area to prevent Hughes’s pass finding Troy Deeney. Jack Grealish beats Lewicki to the loose ball and plays a one-two with Loic Remy to burst through the Everton backline but his early shot is parried over the bar by Denys Boyko. Remy heads wide from the corner.

14’ - An Everton free-kick, 25 yards out, just left of centre, is well struck by the left foot of Patrick Roberts and stings the palms of Masip in the Watford goal. Craig Cathcart beats Andone to the loose ball and sends it into touch.

16’ - Oscar Lewicki’s angled pass from the centre circle sends Calum Chambers into the final third, on the right wing. He draws two defenders and then picks out Brandt inside the area. He shoots across goal but it goes wide to the left.

19’ - Nicola Murru, on the left wing, close to the halfway line, chips the ball into the middle for Florin Andone to control it on his chest and turn out towards the left flank. He takes on Cathcart and switches to his right foot to deliver a high cross to Julian BRANDT on the far side, the young German using his chest to control the ball and despatching a shot between Masip and his near post from the angle of the 6 yard box. 1-0 to Everton. That’s Brandt’s 10th goal of the season.

22’ - Ryan Ledson shoots narrowly wide from distance after Murru tee’d him up from the left.

26’ - Lewicki and Cleverley work the ball forward through the centre of midfield. Andone receives it on the tip of the D and turns to release Brandt into the area on the right of the D. Brandt gets between two Watford defenders as he closes in on goal and Dendoncker blocks the shot. But Florin ANDONE is immediately onto the rebound to fire it low into the bottom left corner from 8 yards, for his first Everton goal. 2-0.

35’ - Etienne Capoue picks the ball up in centre field and passes to Deeney midway inside the Everton half. Loic Remy makes the run across Veljkovic and holds off the Everton skipper as he advances into the area and shoots for the left side of goal, but just misses the target with Boyko at full stretch.

39’ - Veljkovic’s clearing header is flicked on by Cleverley and Andone takes it under control with Craig Cathcart in close attendance. With a clever back heel flick, the Romanian puts Brandt in on goal from the right but Masip manages to block the shot.

HT - A satisfying first 45 minutes. Florin Andone is repaying my faith in him with an 8.1 performance, in which he has scored one, assisted one and been involved in several positive attacking moves. Hassan is coming on for Watford at half-time, in place of Loic Remy. He’s a 6’3” target man, so that may signal a change of approach from Kenny Jackett.

54’ - From inside the D, just right of centre, Patrick Roberts strikes a free-kick over the Watford wall but he can’t get it down quickly enough and it soars narrowly over the bar.

58’ - Roberts attacks down the left wing and then crosses from deep to the far side. Brandt is unmarked but a long way from goal, so he jumps high to get as much power behind the header as he can, but Masip dives to his right to make the save.

60’ - Watford counter attack and Hassan finds Nyom on the right wing, midway inside the Everton half. He plays the substitute Fazzi on the right side of the penalty area and as Lascelles comes across to make the challenge, he leaves HASSAN unmarked to covert the low cross into the bottom left corner from close range. 2-1.

70’ - Roberts passes to Andone who has his back to goal, 30 yards out. He tightly turns Craig Cathcart and gets a couple of yards to unleash a low shot which Masip saves at the foot of the left hand post.

75’ - Tom Cleverley’s left wing corner is headed at goal by the substitute Lorenzo Reyes from the near post but Masip catches it.

77’ - Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is on for the tiring Ryan Ledson, feeds Brandt on the edge of the area and he forces Cathcart into a sliding tackle. Andone reacts quickly and lets fly, but the ball sizzles narrowly over the top right corner of the goal.

81’ - Boateng plays a high ball through the middle and Patrick Roberts darts between two defenders to attack the Watford penalty area. He opts to go around Cathcart on the right and the Watford centre back makes another sliding tackle, directing the ball to Julian Brandt who evades Sallahi to shoot from a tight angle but Masip tips it over.

85’ - Masip saves from Tom Cleverley after good work on the left wing from Roberts and Murru creates a shooting opportunity from just inside the D.

90’+1 - Cleverley’s right wing corner is headed at goal by Milos Veljkovic but Matip saves on his goal line.

At one point, I thought we were going to blow Watford away but they managed to get themselves back in the match with a well taken counter attack goal. After that though, we remained in charge and looked more likely to add a third than concede a late equaliser. Florin Andone finally showed me what he can do up front and playing Oscar Lewicki at the base of the midfield worked well, with Cleverley and Ledson playing more creative roles just in front of him. The Kenny Jackett aerial onslaught did not materialise - they were much more effective at running the channels, but not often enough to take anything from this match.
