Mata's free kick was the difference between the sides.

Chelsea ground out a decent 3 points against rivals QPR today thanks to Juan Mata's early free kick. Chelsea dominated proceedings but seemed content to settle for the one goal.

It took just 12 minutes for the FA Cup finalists to take the lead, Juan Mata expertly curling a free kick from 25 yards past Julio Cesar in the QPR net.

It was just the start that Chelsea needed and they tried to push on, Demba Ba went close with a strike after good work from Oscar. QPR looked dangerous on the counter though, Junior Hoilett proving to be their main threat.

The second half fizzled out as Chelsea sat on their lead and despite a few near chances for Bobby Zamora, there never really seemed to be a doubt which way this result was going. Chelsea make their position in the Champions League spots solid for another week.

Sam Illyroy said:
Great goal from Juan and an important 3 points. We move on to the next game.

Newcastle have continued to have a good season and currently sit 8th in the league table, and it's most likely thanks to the genius of this French midfielder. His wonderful passing ability is key to how Newcastle play.

TEAM NEWS

Chelsea are without Oriol Romeu and Paulo Ferreira but have otherwise a full squad.

Newcastle are without key players, Yoann Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko, Cheikh Tiote, Vurnon Anita and Haris Vuckic. They could be big losses for them.

MATCH PREVIEW

REVERSE FIXTURE Newcastle 0 - 2 Chelsea
Chelsea went to St. James' Park off the back of a defeat against Manchester City and proved their quality thanks to two Fernando Torres strikes. The Blues will be hoping that Newcastle's injury woes work in their favour as they seek to solidify their Champions League position.

Sam Illyroy said:
The games are coming thick and fast now towards the end of the season and each one is as important as the next. With the home crowd behind us I'm sure we can go and win this game.

Hazard (39)
Luiz (46)

Luiz secured a routine victory for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dominated and secured 3 vital points on the road to Champions League qualification thanks to goals from Eden Hazard and David Luiz - and it could have been more.

In the first half, Chelsea created a whole host of opportunities, with Fernando Torres guilty of missing a fair share of them. Mata, Hazard and Oscar were causing all kinds of problems for the Toon defence, and it eventually paid off.

Mata slipped in Hazard for his 11th goal of a prolific campaign for the youngster, to give Chelsea a deserved half time lead.

And just a minute into the second half, their lead was doubled as Hazard's corner was headed home by the towering David Luiz, sending the home fans wild.

Newcastle barely threatened at all in the second half as a determined Chelsea side dug in for victory and they now head into the last 3 games of the season with a 4 point lead over their closest rivals.

Sam Illyroy said:
We're keeping up that momentum which is important at this stage. We cannot afford to make any more slip ups from now until the end of the season.

APRIL REVIEW
320561d1363684046t-chelsea-fc-samillyroy-legacy-returns-fm13-chelseafc-logo-420x200.jpg

A good month when all things are considered. Victory in the FA Cup semi-final gives us a final against Manchester United to look forward to next month, as well as some solid league displays. The defeat against Everton was a low point, but we put on some top performances to give us a chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Sam Illyroy said:
The defeat against Everton was a shame, but we are in the final of the FA Cup and we're on course to qualify for the Champions League so in that respect we couldn't have done much more in April. This is the last month of the season and I'm desperate to bring silverware back to Stamford Bridge. KTBFFH!

EDEN HAZARD
Eden is going the right way towards becoming Player of the Year for 2013 following recent displays. He followed up FA Cup winners against Tottenham and Leeds with the winner in the Semi-Final against Arsenal, as well as a great finish against Newcastle. Another top month for the Belgian.

MAY PREVIEW
An exciting month for Chelsea fans. Just three more games left in the Barclays Premier League means the race for the Champions League spots is going to go down to the wire. Fixtures against Manchester City and Fulham precede the FA Cup final, and a final match against Southampton could decide whether Chelsea play in Europe's premier competition next season.

Fulham's danger man has had a good first season under Martin Jol, helping Fulham to achieve mid-table safety with some important goals. Is a constant threat and Chelsea will have to be wary of his presence.

TEAM NEWS

Chelsea welcome back Oriol Romeu earlier than expected, but Paulo Ferreira remains absent.

Fulham are without Urby Emmanuelson, Paer Hansson and Kieran Richardson.

MATCH PREVIEW
REVERSE FIXTURE Fulham 2 - 1 Chelsea
It was this fixture back in December that really de-railed Chelsea's title bid and the Blues will be keen to ensure they are not hampered by their local rivals again. Chelsea have won their last two games and will want to keep that form going with the FA Cup final on the horizon.

Sam Illyroy said:
Fulham gave us a really tough game back in December so we're expecting something similar today. We're in good form though at the moment and we're desperate for the win so I'm hopeful.

Ivanovic (72)

Torres put on a wonderful display to secure a handsome Chelsea victory.

Chelsea continued their good late season form with a thumping victory over West London neighbours Fulham. Torres' excellent finishes were added to by centre backs Ivanovic and Cahill.

The Blues looked like a determined side from the off as they looked to pay Fulham back for a defeat that stopped them in their tracks back in December. Torres got Chelsea rolling with an expert finish after just 4 minutes.

Chelsea dominated the first half without really breaking through, although Berbatov was twice denied by Cech. But Chelsea doubled the lead after the break as Cahill headed home a corner.

Torres then chested down Ramires' lofted through ball before firing home from an angle, before Branislav Ivanovic flicked on Azpilicueta's throw in to seal a handsome victory.

A trip to Manchester this Wednesday precedes the FA Cup final but this win puts Chelsea in a good position to qualify for the Champions League with just two league games to go.

Sam Illyroy said:
This is what we're all about at our best, Fernando was excellent this afternoon and showed the real quality he does possess. I am in two minds as to what my starting XI will be for the cup final next weekend now.

Manchester City v. Chelsea
Premier League Matchday 37, Etihad Stadium

KEY PLAYER - DAVID SILVA (49 Apps, 6 goals)
View attachment 321945
City's key creative force has ensured that the goals flowed for the Sky Blues this season. A similar player to Juan Mata, Silva fitted in at the Etihad from day one and has gone from strength to strength. Key in this match today.

TEAM NEWS

Chelsea are expected to shuffle their pack, having qualified for the Champions League already courtesy of Liverpool's defeat, and with the FA Cup final just 3 days away. Yossi Benayoun is injured though and Paulo Ferreira is on a leave of absence.

Maicon, Gael Clichy and Edin Dzeko are all out for Manchester City who top the Premier League by a single point ahead of this game.

MATCH PREVIEW

REVERSE FIXTURE Chelsea 1 - 2 Manchester City
Chelsea went down to a clinical City back in January, with Dzeko the goalscorer that day. He is unavailable today as City look to clinch their second Premier League title. Chelsea will secure 3rd spot with a win this afternoon but they are expected to change a few players.

Sam Illyroy said:
It's great that we've qualified for the Champions League but we need to win this match still. 3rd place ensures we don't have to go through the qualification stage next year and it's also vital that we show how good a team we are. United will certainly be backing us today.

Sergio Aguero all but secured City another Premier League title.

Manchester City all but won the Premier League title with a crushing defeat of Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Sergio Aguero caused a makeshift Chelsea defence all sorts of problems and was unlucky not to get a hat-trick.

Chelsea made a host of changes ahead of their FA Cup Final against Manchester United, but few could have predicted such a landslide victory. Tevez scored a penalty conceded by Ivanovic after 7 minutes, before Aguero doubled when Ivanovic missed his interception.

Marin then conceded a second penalty, fouling Aguero in the box, but Tevez was unable to convert it. It mattered not as Kompany headed home from the resultant corner.

Chelsea pulled one back on the half hour, Lampard burying a rebound after great work from Demba Ba but it bucked the trend. They were 4-1 down straight after the break when Aguero pounced again to score his second of the game.

Chelsea were actually the better team in the second half, with Moses a constant nuisance, but City confirmed a landslide victory with Gareth Barry pouncing at a corner.

Sam Illyroy said:
It's a dissapointing day for us because we never got going. I put out a changed side but we still should have equipped ourselves better than that. It just goes to show how far ahead of us City are at this point in time but we will bridge that gap in the future.

KEY PLAYER - ROBIN VAN PERSIE (52 Apps, 41 goals)
View attachment 321966
A quite incredible first season for Robin Van Persie at Manchester United and he will be keen to ensure that ends with them lifting a trophy. Helped fire United into the Champions League final where they will face Bayern Munich at the end of the month.

TEAM NEWS

Yossi Benayoun is joined on the injury list by Marko Marin who suffered a knock against Manchester City. Paulo Ferreira is on leave of absence.

United are without Wayne Rooney and Nani for this tie, the former of which will be a big loss while Nani has their most assists this season.

MATCH PREVIEW

A huge moment in the season for both teams. United are unbeaten in all competitions since Chelsea beat them 2-1 at Stamford Bridge back in February. It's been a great season for the Red Devils but they look like they're just going to fall short in the league race. This is a great chance of silverware for them, but Chelsea are hot on their heels. This is a competition the Blues haven't lost in open play in since 2008, and are keen to make it their second successive victory.

Sam Illyroy said:
This game will go down to small margins and Rooney will be a big loss for them. That said, we have to focus on our own strengths, of which there are a large number. We are more than capable of beating United as we've shown on a couple of occasions this season and that gives us confidence ahead of this match.

MANCHESTER UNITED 3 - 1 CHELSEA

Wembley-stadium-ahead-of--001.jpg

Ground staff gear up for the 2013 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Chelsea.

14:05: It's that time of the year folks, and what a special occasion this is! 7 time winners Chelsea play 11 time winners Manchester United in the number one date in any Englishman's football calender. It's FA Cup Final Day!

14:11: United have had a great season, with Robin Van Persie enjoying a wonderful debut season at Old Trafford. 41 goals is just the kind of haul the management were looking for when they brought him in, so he hasn't dissapointed.

14:14: So let's look at how these two got here. United beat Leyton Orient, Nottingham Forest, Wigan and Norwich to get to this stage - hardly the toughest run in!

14:16: Meanwhile, Chelsea took a far tougher route to the final. A trip to Middlesbrough was followed up by a home match against Sunderland. Having sneaked through that thanks to Victor Moses' late strike, the Blues were drawn against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. That needed a replay but it was Eden Hazard who scored the vital goal to send Chelsea through. Then it was two games against old rivals Leeds United before a semi against Arsenal. I think we know who took the harder route!

14:21: The squad's are coming in shortly, there's going to be dissapointment for some Chelsea regulars!

14:25: Manchester United v. Chelsea
Mancheseter United: Lindegaard, Rafael, Alaba, Smalling, Evans, Jones, Hamsik, Young, Powell, Valencia, van Persie. Subs: De Gea, Cleverley, Kagawa, Hernandez, Ferdinand, Welbeck, Buettner
Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Cole, Terry, David Luiz, Ramires, Mikel, Oscar, Mata, Hazard, Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Romeu, Betrand, Moses, Lampard, Ba

14:32: So, some big absences here. No Rooney, we were aware of already, so it's a big start for Nick Powell who scored here last season - in Crewe's League 2 Play-Off Final. A big step up for him.

14:35: The big call from the Chelsea manager is to drop Frank Lampard. He's scored 11 goals this season for Chelsea, but there's no room for him in the starting XI. Ivanovic is another surprise exclusion from the team.

14:39: The band are out on the pitch playing the classic FA Cup final anthem. It's nearly time!

14:50: The teams are out onto the pitch along with the referee and the match delegates. The Queen is up there on the balcony ahead of this historic Cup tie.

14:56: The teams have shook hands and we're almost ready to go. Lovely sunny day down in London. Perfect Cup final weather.

genuinely got a crash dump with ten minutes left to go, David Luiz had pulled one back as well :\ will have to replay the final, and the city game though I'll make sure I lose the City game.

well not the best, but I wouldn't say it's the worst either.. spent no money, played a ridiculous number of games. just needed a wee bit more luck.

Just finsihed my first season with Chelsea.. Spent big but it has paid off. Won the league, champs league, fa cup, super cup and world club comp.

2nd season pre-season underway and looking to ship out old players to create a youthful chelsea squad that can compete at the top for the next 10 yrs.

Would people be interested in this story? If so I shall make a start tonight!
