Closing the gap between defence and midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation

Basically how do I do this, would I use a stopper of a cb or defensive minded cm to cover the gap I always find myself playing a holding midfielder in there to stop this but I want a no10 player of my own rather than setting up so defensive
