It is preferable to choose to get screened for colorectal cancer as soon as you turn 45 and to keep getting checked periodically after that. If these symptoms are common, however—inflammatory bowel disease or ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer in the family, or colorectal cancer in family history—you may be checked sooner than 45 or more frequently than other people.
