Database

I have recently downloaded a database update. I have then added a few changes of my own which weren't included. There is now a new version of the database which I wish to download. My question is this: To preserve the changes I have made do I merge the new database with the old one? If so does this not cancel the changes in the new one? Whereas, if I merge the old database with the new one will this lose the changes I have made?
