Defending and passing is terrible!

My defending and passing has been terrible before and after the patch, my team is giving away very bad passes which normally lead to clear cut chances for the opposition that they score most of the time and no my defending just stand and watch in the final third as the opposition's strikers pass the ball around them like they're not even there! I have direct passing, pass into space and work the ball on but none of these instructions are ever implemented by my team, can anyone offer any advice on what I should change or reccommend some instructions or tactics for me? Yes, Defending has been HORRIBLE after the patch even at my end. Passing too, my players just pass it to opposition and defenders do nothing to stop them.

Maybe you're trying too hard to rush things, with more direct passing you're giving away possession too easy. On the other hand, work ball into box is a little conflicting with direct passing and pass into space.
