Do you guys actually use downloaded tactics?

If only that were true, have fun playing some of the formations and styles they did back in the 30s.
2-3-5, 3-3-4, 2-3-2-3, plus a fair few others, doesn't matter how much reading you do about them you're still very very likely to fail to do anything with them in game.

Anyway you said use it correctly, which is why people often download one and use that as a base for their own. Something they know is working on the game and something they can work from.
No amount of watching football on TV will allow you to know if it will work in game unless you or someone else has tested it.

Each year i download a ready made tactic i can use based on the formation i want then create a backup tactic that i can tweak based on my knowledge of the match engine. But this year i have not been able to create a backup tactic because of the new changes. Another issue is that the match engine tends to favor a few certain formations/tactics meaning the game is limited. Trying to do your own thing could result in you being punished & losing even if you have very good players. So i try to find a balance between a downloaded tactic & one that i create

Optimism and passion? I've probably played the game more than half the people on this forum.

The overhaul of the tactical system and faults with the ME have made intuitive and logical thinking far harder to implement. The benefit of this is that it has made playing the game a more collaborative effort with the wider FM community for me. The disadvantage is that it's harder to play a style of football that you want to play, you're forced to play one that fits in with the ME.

The necessity of knowing what style of football the ME does and doesn't allow has made it more necessary to either download tactics or base your tactics very closely on other peoples' tactics.
