Because English giants Chelsea finished 2nd in their Champions League group behind AS Roma they knew they would get a very tough tie in the knockout stages. They did indeed, infact its easily the tie of the round and one of the biggest tie's the Champions League will ever witness.

Yes thats right Chelsea will face their ex manager Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid side in a mouth watering tie. Mourinho's Madrid currently lie in 3rd in La Liga already 5 points behind leaders Barcelona but all club form will go our the window when these two giants meet. The former Chelsea manager said he was dissapointed to draw Chelsea at this early stage as he would like his team and Chelsea to both go further but now one has to go.

Although these fixtures are 2 months away Chelsea are currently on very good form and have prepelled back to the top of the Premier League. Chelsea's cheif excecutive Ron Gourlay after the draw said "Its a massive game for our club, the whole club will be excited to see Jose back at Chelsea but we will make it tough for him and his side".

Here is the Champions League First Knockout draw in full.

Because of the injury to Ivanovic and suspensions for Terry and Bruma, Chelsea were forced to give 18 year old Rohan Ince his proffesional debut today away at MANCHESTER CITY! Ince who has been at Chelsea since the age of 7 has been playing for the youth team and the reserves this season but was called up to play along side Alex at the City of Manchester Stadium in this huge clash.

The English born who can also represent Jamacia stands at 6'3" played the whole 90 minutes as his Chelsea side swepped Roberto Mancini's side away winning 3-0. Ince ended up being the only Chelsea centre back on the field at full time as Alex got sent off in the 85th minute. Ince who is a second cousin to Liverpool's Thomas Ince meaning he is also related to former Liverpool and England star Paul Ince.

Chelsea's December review

December is known as the busiest month in the English football calender and Chelsea amazed everyone with 6 wins out of 6. The Blues won massive games against Liverpool and Man City and seeled their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with an amazing game away at Roma.

First up for Johnson's Chelsea was a South West London derby away at Fulham. Ex Chelsea player Mark Hughes said he would love a win against his former side and said he was confident his side could beat the holders. It didn't take long for the champions to make their mark when Pjanic scored after 12 minues. Chelsea doubled their lead before the break when Nicolas Anelka scored the first of what would be a good month for the Frenchman. Anelka then finished off the Cottegers with a goal just after the hour mark giving Chelsea 3 points in a massive game. Manager Johnson said he was delighted with the result and performance and said his team owed it to the fans.

Champions League next for Chelsea and they needed a result to secure their place in the Knockout stages. They travlled to Rome to play AS Roma where ex Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri had already got his side a guarrenteed top spot finish. One man stole the show today for Chelsea and that man was Nicolas Anelka who hit a 41 minute hat-rick in a 5-2 thriller. It was the Frenchmans 5th goal in 2 games and the win secured Chelsea's place in the next round of the Champions League. A brace from Borriello didn't matter too much as Essien and Drogba both got theirself on the score sheet. Johnson said " Anelka was immense today, i hope he can keep this form up".

Back to the Premier League now for Chelsea and Alan Pardew's Newcastle was the next opponents to Stamford Bridge. Former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll started against his former side for the first time. Pjanic gave the Blues the lead on the half hour mark but it stayed that way until 10 minutes from the end. 2 Alex penaltys in 6 minutes and a John Terry goal deep in stopage time gave Chelsea a comprehensive 4-0 win. Johnson said "We are on a good run at the moment, December is a tough month so lets not get carried away".

Chelsea vs Liverpool has become a massive fixture in the past few years and always seems to be a tight affair. Liverpool with Dalglish in charge has made many big signings this season the likes of Rodallega, Toivonen, Donovan and Ridgewell have all streghend up the side. Like usual this was a tight game scoreline wise but Chelsea had all the chances, it seemed to be heading for a draw but when young centre back Jeffrey Bruma got sent off in the 92nd minute maybe Liverpool would pounce. But no it went the other way insted, a man who broke Anfield hearts a few years ago scored the winner in the 94th minute when Serbian defender Ivanovic scored a bullet header. Chelsea boss Johnson went mad on the touchline and said after the game he was estatic.

Man City would have really fancied their chances against Chelsea as they had Terry, Ivanovic and Bruma all unavailable. Suggestions were that maybe Ferreira or Mikel would partner Alex at centre back but Johnson gave his full faith in 18 year old Rohan Ince. The youngster repaid his managers faith as Chelsea smashed title rivals Man City 3-0. An early goal from Lampard and another after 30 minutes from ex City player Anelka gave them a 2-0 lead at half time. Ince had a good game but it was his centre back partner Alex who saw red in the 85th minute giving City a glimmer of hope maybe. But it was Chelsea who added to their tally with a penalty by Jon Obi Mikel. Here is what Johnson had to say, "That was easily our best performance of the season, just magnificent".

A much changed team would take on Wolves at Stamford Bridge as Johnson looks to rotate after the busy Christmas period. Although Chelsea dominated the game one goal seperated the sides with 15million pound signing Andy Carroll scoring the winner in the 29th minute. It was the 21 year olds 7th goal in a Chelsea shirt and he looks to be repaying his managers faith.

Chelsea's January Review

View attachment 124716 View attachment 124717 View attachment 124718

January is a month where managers look to improve their squad to make sure they stand a chance of success this season. Chelsea manager Erland Johnson had no problem doing this as his team came into January looking very rampant. Chelsea would play 8 games in January 4 in the league, 2 in the FA cup and 2 in the Carling Cup. Chelsea would drop 4 points in January letting title rivals Manchester United take top spot. Here is a breakdown of all Chelsea's results.

West Ham vs Chelsea
New years day and Chelsea faced a short trip accross London to face former Chelsea manger Arvam Grant's West Ham. West Ham got an unlikely point at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season with a late Scott Parker equaliser so this would fill them with hope. In a game that saw 6 yellow cards (4each side) it was a tight rugged affair. Chelsea ran out 1-0 winners with a goal by Ivorian striker Didier Drogba with only his 6th goal of the season. Former Chelsea acadamy product Carlton Cole saw red after 77 minutes after he recieved 2 yellow cards.

Chelsea vs Wigan
Next up for the Blues was Roberto Matinez's Wigan side. Before the game Martinez stated that Chelsea were favourates for the Premier League title. Chelsea had a much changed side for this game as they looked to keep their place at the top of the table. Chelsea were already 2-0 up when Maynor Figueroa saw red. Goals by Benayoun and Ramires put the Blues 2-0 within the first 10 minutes. Drogba, Bruma and Sturridge added a goal each to see the Blues run out 5-0 comfortable winners. Johnson said he was pleased the team was taking their chances now.

Chelsea vs Bristol Rovers
League one side Bristol Rovers were Chelsea's oppnents in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Obviously Bristol Rovers were massive outsiders so Johnson changed his starting line-up quite abit. Bristol Rovers left Stamford Bridge without a shot on goal and with that left with a 3-0 defeat. 2 goals in 2 games for both Ramires and Benayoun put Chelsea 2-0 up within 20 minutes. A late own goal by Danny Coles sealed a 3-0 with for Chelsea and a place in the 4th round is Chelsea's.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea
Carling cup semi final 1st leg and Chelsea travelled to Birmingham to play Gerard Houlier's Aston Villa. This was always going to be a tight game and neither side would be out of this tie after this 90 minutes. Chelsea ran away 2-0 winners with goals from Drogba and Carroll one in each half. Although Chelsea lead this tie with 2 away goals it is only half time but Villa would find it tough at Stamford Bridge.
View attachment 124723

Tottenham vs Chelsea
A heated London derby was the next game for Johnson's side as Chelsea travelled to White Hart Lane to play Tottenham. Before this game Chelsea had gone on a club record 12 game winning run and 8 games without conceding. Chelsea couldn't have got off to a worse start when captain John Terry saw red after just 10 minutes which was his 3rd red card at White Hart Lane in his carear. 2 more minutes had passed until Spurs made their extra man count when Van Der Vaart smashed home a long drive. Although Spurs dominated most of the game Chelsea amazingly got an equaliser 6 minutes from time from an unlikely source. Portugese full back Jose Bosingwa found himself unmarked in the box to smash home a massive point for Johnson's men. Johnson after the game said "We got lucky today but i will take a point every day of the week".

Chelsea vs Aston Villa
The 2nd game between these 2 and more would be to come. After Chelsea's point at Spurs Johnson's men would be looking to bounce back with a home win against Houlier's Villa. Serbian centre back Branaslav Ivanovic scored after just half an hour to give Johnson's men a 1-0 lead at half time. Chelsea were un able to extend their lead in the 2nd half and missed chance after chance. The inevitable happend, 1 minute from the end and centre back James Collins scored for Villa earning them a sensational point at Stamford Bridge. This result saw Man Utd go back to the top of the Premier League and Johnson was to unhappy to speak to the press after the game.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa
The 3rd match between these 2 in 15 days and this would determine who would play in the Carling Cup final at Wembley. Chelsea took a 2-0 lead from the first leg so manager Johnson made a few changes for this tie. Amazingly Serbian defender Ivanovic scored his 2nd goal against Villa in 4 days and helped his team to a 1-0 win winning 3-0 on aggregate. Chelsea later found out they would play rivals Liverpool in the final as they beat Merseyside rivals Everton on penaltys. Johnson said he was delighted to win the game and is looking forward to his first final as Chelsea manager.

Chelsea vs Peterborough
FA Cup 4th round now and Chelsea were given a fortunate home tie again against League one side Peterborough. Darren Ferguson's side were a tough nut to crack and it wasen't until Salomon Kalou came on at half time that Chelsea looked the better side. A double by the Ivorian in the 2nd half was enough to give Chelsea a 2-0 win and see them through to the 5th round. New signing Andy Carroll saw red 13 minutes from the end but Johnson's side managed to hold on.

Chelsea's February Review

February would be a very good month for Johnson's Chelsea as they went unbeaten for the whole month. Chelsea would play games in the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League as they look for a presedented quadruple. Chelsea would win 5 of their 6 games in February and drawing the other, lets take a detailed look into their games.

Blackpool vs Chelsea
Ian Holloway's Blackpool lie 16th in the Premier League and are proving all critics wrong. Chelsea went into this game 2nd in the Premier League and looking to try and keep the pressure up on leaders Man Utd. Chelsea hit 6 in the reverse fixture this season winning 6-1 and they went one better today winning 6-0. 5 goals in 33 minutes sealed the win for Johnson's men in a rampant first half. 2 goals from Anelka, Pjanic, Drogba and a Kingston own goal put the Blues 5-0 up at half time. A rare 2nd half goal from Jose Bosingwa ended a quiet 2nd half as Chelsea just saw the game out. Manager Johnson said "This shows how clynical we can be, at the moment we are looking very good".
View attachment 124767

Bolton vs Chelsea
Johnson had played Bolton twice already before this game winning both so he had every right to be confident. Bolton would prove to be a tough test in terms of stats but not scoreline as the South West London club ran out 4-0 winners. 2 goals in 2 minutes from out of form striker Drogba and a goal by Anelka gave Johnson's team a 3-0 lead at the half way mark. Ex Celtic player Scott Cuthbert was the unlucky player as he but the ball in his own net thanks to a fizzed in Frank Lampard cross.
View attachment 124768

Chelsea vs Everton
This would be the first of 2 meetings in 7 days for these two sides so both teams would like to put down a marker in this one. Chelsea went into the game back top of the Premier League by just one goal difference from Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd. The first half saw no goals but goals from ex Liverpool player Benayoun and Ivorian Kalou saw Chelsea to victory. The 2-0 win impressed manager Johnson "Excellent victory, we didnt have much luck in the 1st half but took our chances in the 2nd half".
View attachment 124769

Everton vs Chelsea
The second of two clashes between these sides in just a week, and Johnson's men went into this FA Cup 5th round game confident after their 2-0 win against Moyes men. This was a game finished off in the 1st half from two Frenchman when a brace from Malouda and a goal from Anelka put Chelsea 3 up at half time. Chelsea made 3 changes at half time as they hosted Real Madrid in just 4 days time and managed to hang on to the 3-0 lead to book their place in the FA Cup quarter finals.

Chelsea vs Real Madrid
Easily the biggest and most watched tie of the knockout stages. Mourinho vs Chelsea was always going to be a huge game worldwide and a very tight affair. Madrid came into this game 3rd in La Liga with Chelsea leading the Premier League. 6 bookings each told the story of this match as both teams looked evanly matched as the scoreline suggests. Florent Malouda gave Chelsea a lead 5 minutes before the break putting them in a decent position. As Chelsea searched for another goal Madrid kept catching Chelsea on the counter attack and Spain international defender Sergio Ramos scored an equalizer to give Madrid the upper hand going into the 2nd leg. Chelsea boss Johnson said "We switched off and now have made it alot harder for ourself. We now have to score in Madrid and i believe we can".
View attachment 124771

Chelsea vs Liverpool
Carling Cup Final day and Kenny Dalglish took his Liverpool side south to play table topping Chelsea at Wembley. Boss Dalglish would welcome a distraction from the Premier League as Liverpool have suffered an indifferent season coming into this game 6th in the Premier League. This was always going to be a tough game as it always is between Chelsea and Liverpool. We had to wait until the 80th minute to get our first goal and back on form striker Didier Drogba scored to give Chelsea the lead with only 10 minutes left on the clock. As Liverpool tried to press forward to take this game into extra time Chelsea caught them on the break and 15million pound man Andy Carroll wrapped up Johnson's second piece of silverwere as Chelsea manager. Johnson said "Its an excellent day for the club, winning this could really give us the hunger to win more this season".
View attachment 124772

After dropping to 2nd in January Chelsea enjoyed a month where they won all their Premier League games and went back to the top of the Premier League on goal difference. This seems to be one of the tightest Premier League seasons to date.
