Johnson was competant getting foward as we expected but his defensive side was trash, although you can argue he made some brillant last minute slide tackles to save us we were only in that postion due to his crappy postioning and defensive work rate to start with, i would give walker a go in the WCQs and if he doesnt make it stick with johnson who must improve his postioning at least!

I actually had a lot of faith in Rooney carrying out the role of marking Pirlo. Everyone I talked to (as well as people on here) agreed that's what was going to happen, and it definitely seemed to be Roy's plan. But after about 15 minutes Rooney seemed to give up. I could have sworn he used to be great at these man marking jobs?

I was expecting Pirlo to have to move high up the pitch to gain space, where Rooney would have been reluctant to track him to, but he didn't even need to. Of course it's naive to lay the blame squarely with Rooney, but considering how diligent he used to be, it did surprise me how slack he was. He wasn't great going forward either which leads me to conclude he must simply be lacking in match fitness.

Anyway if we have Italy in August as Mike says it will be interesting to see what's changed. I imagine neither side will play a full strength 11, which would be a shame as I'd like to see if we could improve the performance. If we fixed the Pirlo problem, played a slightly higher line (with different defenders) and had a bit more composure on the ball (not holding my breath), we are almost or even as good as Italy.

Right now i am begging to the gods, to give us a win tomorrow... Come on Portugal... MAKE HISTORY!

If you're begging for the gods then we're screwed, we won't get anything from them :P XDDD

Really looking forward to this game, Spain's game plan may focus round keeping Ronaldo quiet, but this is where Nani can punish them.

If they just think of Ronaldo as a treat they will be surely sorry!
It is reckless to look just at one player as dangerous, even if he is the main figure of a team.
I just hope Spain do not pursue their usual boring tiki-taka as it's extremely frustrating not just for opponents but also for the spectators, but I can dream on.

If Villa was playing I would've picked Spain, but without him I just don't know. Obviously Spain are loaded with talent, but Portugal can turn on the flair just as easily. Have a feeling this may go to ET

Haha, keep dreaming, you don't want us to play tiki taka because if it works you know what will happen ;)

Anyway I'd expect more tiki taka than ever today, if only to keep cr7 off the ball. I think if we put a lot of pressure on the Portuguese midfield they will be hard pressed to put any passes to their excellent wingers, and as long as the cb's (particularly Ramos) keep an eye on long passes that would be a fine way of mitigating cr7 and nani

I haven't been particularly impressed by Nani this tournament, especially after the season he had with United. I think if Spain keep Ronaldo largely out of the game they will be comfortable. Narrow 1-0 win for Spain in normal time with the goal coming towards the end of a boring game.

What will happen :D? Another offside goal :D? Or another 4-0 like you had in Lisbon :) ?

Very poor refing there, Nani beats two players and he pulls it back for a free-kick. Really impressed with Portugal so far.

Nani's diving has been pretty pathetic so far, for those who say he's the second best player at United behind Rooney - on this showing, I'm just not seeing it, he spends about as much time sitting about crying in pain as he does with the ball.

He did have a good run before that mind you, but the diving/time wasting side of his game is pretty pathetic for a top player.

Portugal looking very good, shape is good and a few counter opportunities... Negredo I still think is a strange call!

Nani has been excellent so far, you can't say he has been poor simply because of his diving. That's something you get used to with Nani...

When did he dive today? First one should have been yellow to Ramos and second was not a dive, his face hit Ramos's (?) back, I can't recall a single dive.

Really? His face hit his back yes, no need to lay on the ground for that long and get medical assistance.

Oh and the first one was a dive, fouled, but dived.

Yeah because sitting from 1000s of miles away we know how much impact it had. Should have got up straight away. He didn't even get a single cut on his face, clear playacting.
