familiar with formation

Whats the best way to make my squad familiar with a formation? How long does it take?

I've never studied it to much detail, just made sure the players were capable of the roles needed and spammed them all with 2-3 friendlies a week in pre-season (and even during) using the formation I wanted to stick with.
Keep an eye on individual instructions, they can make or break a formation.
