It is a real improvement since FM05, which is the one I had. (And yay, now that I finally had managed to get into the numbers and not ruin the second season with bad signings... actually, now that despite ruining the third with signings I managed to solve it with a few better new players to build a backbone and tactical tweaking... well, no matter, took the team I was and just had promoted to Premier (Wigam after leaving Rushden two seasons after promoting them to League One, which I made in first season, second I was 1 point short from getting them into championship)).

The 3D looks good enough, still a bit senseless to review for doubtful penalties when it's not polished enough to see contact when there is instead of two players apart then one falling. But I won't hold that detail against, that's some extra finesse that would require some further working with the 3D engine. It is good that matches look more like real matches, in '05 it was basically each player well defined to his position, attacker having to deal with a defender with only the possible addition of some attacking midfielder. With '09 I start to see players accosted by more than one, the midfield up to attacking midfielders involved in defensive work at last.

One great surprise is that, unlike 99% of the rest of the games, the FM'09 programming is better than FM05's. Usually programmers tend to see stronger comps as more room to absorb careless and inefficient code and a chance to be lax in the attempt to use the less resources possible. So you get cases like F1-2002 with requirements that are above 200% bigger than MGPRS2 for a graphic improvement of no more than 10% and the loss of some important features. Not the case of FM. FM09 brings several new features, even if training is vastly simplified (yes, I just had found a great training schedule just before getting FM09), but... the speed at which it works is also much better! :D FM'05 with Spain, France, Poland, Germany and England complete leagues plus all players from Spain, Ireland and UK and big database can easily take 10mins between relevant dates, FM09 with full Argentina, Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, UK, Ireland, Greece, Turkey, Holland, US, Poland, Israel, Portugal, all players from Spain, UK, Ireland, Poland and big database takes one minute tops. So big "yay! you are really good professionals!" to the SI games programmer team.

There's a few uncomfortable issues: info panels in tv mode moving after making tactical changes, if out of tv mode and see only parts, the screen returning to the formation or overview view instead of the one that had been selected, which forces to select it again, if one goes to review tactics during the prematch at a moment different to when you're shown to them, like after prematch talk or just before, then at the end of match it returns to tv view and continue in the play/pause button, which is not a real problem.

The press conferences are neat, but the answers are not appropriate in several cases. For example, the set degree of agreement/disagreement tends to be the answer set shown to the player in many times that I honestly don't see them making any sense for the question being made. I would prefer, when commenting on other managers or matches, not to have each reply headed by "positive/neutral/negative comment"... sort of calling the player stupid and giving him the work done.

All in all it's a great game and great improvement by a quality programming team. 8.5/10

Forgot to add one feature I miss and would like to: a protest (and perhaps an agree) referee decision button during the match. (You'll excuse me this double post, but given it's been a day or two since I posted the previous I think it makes sense to post a new instead of editing)

FM 2009 Feature Roundup

The videos to the left give us the first look at the brand new Football Manager 2009 (FM 2009) by Sports Interactive & SEGA. From the trailers some of the cool new features we can see are:

  • 3D Pitch - The pitch is now in 3D but not a over the top FIFA/Pro Evo style but a much smaller scale tactical view. It is still a work in progress though and may change before new release. The match engine has been in development for 3 years with the support of Japan's Virtua Striker team. For those who don't like change the 2D view will still be available.
  • Full Match Timeline - There is now a timeline on display during a match which will enable the user to click on a certain key incident and quickly view it on the 3D match engine. This is very similar to the feature that is in Football Manager Live.
  • Widgets - During a match you will be able to pick which 'Widgets' you want to display such as Player Ratings, Match Stats, Live Scores etc....
  • Updated Skin - The look of the skin has been changed slightly with a few more features added for better user accessibility.
  • Assistant Manager Feedback - Tactical & Motivational feedback during matches to help you see what you are doing right and more importantly what you are doing wrong.
  • Press Conferences - Before and after matches and when you take a new job. These will play a key role and the answers you choose to the questions may come back to haunt you later in your managerial career.
  • Training - More specific training on learning new 'Special Moves'. So players can now learn to do stepovers etc.. Very useful feature to help train youngsters up.
  • Female Managers - No explanation needed, pointless feature.
  • Widescreen Support - The game will now be able to work on those nice new widescreen monitors that you should all have. Gone are the days of 1024 x 768.
  • Transfer System Overhaul - Complete overhaul of the whole system so it will now be much more realistic.
