Bundesliga 2 Playoff - 1860 Munchen v Koln / Leg 2

Ray of Hope

Well after that experience in leg 1 in what was truly a footballing lesson, despite our fans and home advantage in all honesty I thought the tie was a write off.

The only one glimpse of hope is what I pointed out in my earlier post, the height advantage our big man had. But in order to utilise this, it would mean we would have to try and create some sort of pressure on their back line - which is non evident in the first tie.

But if the crowd can get behind us early, unsettle them in a stadium they won't have played at this season, if we can ruffle their feathers and make them panic, then maybe, just maybe something special could happen in front of our home fans, true Munich fans.

Kick Off

1st Half

Sixth Minute
- my head was in my hands. The worst possible start our side and our fans could have wished for. Whilst trying to get the early ascendency, not only can they tiki taka - they can break quickly as well!! A swift move saw them create a clear cut one on one opportunity, with Cordoba showing great composure to put it passed our keeper. 1-0 down, and the hope I had just vanished in a complete flash.

21st Minute - whether they were getting complacent I don't know. It seemed just out of nothing, we had an opportunity and we took it. A throw in on the right found its way eventually to probably our star player in midfield and free kick specialist Bekiroglu. Outside the 18 yard box on the volley - wham bam thank you....let you fill the rest. An absolutely phenomenal strike!

Now if anything can get the side believing in something - it's a wonder goal like this. But the away goals rule did count in the playoffs, so in reality the situation was still dire. But the hope was there, if we could grab another goal perhaps before the hour mark it would give us a chance. But concede another we must not.

32nd Minute - and then the perfect goal. A brilliant cross field pass switching the play from Bekiroglu gave our full-back the chance to get forward and put a cross into the box. Reaching the far post it found our freebie signing Atanga to convert superbly. 2-1 to Die Lowen!

Now it really was game on. All the class of Koln and value of their squad meant nothing. In a contest at our place, the fans rocking, their panic button could have potentially set in. Half time, with the game brilliantly poised at 2-1 and only the single away goal Koln's advantage...

2nd Half

Yep, there was a lot of action in this game. Did the half time break come at the right time for Koln? You would have thought so after throwing away a 2 goal leg lead in the space of 11 or so minutes.

46th Minute - After dallying with the ball in a dangerous area, it was the Koln left back who was the one dispossessed. Bekiroglu absolutely the centre of everything today pinched his pocket and dribbled into a crossing position. Seydel wanted the ball crossed into him, and licking his lips the perfect ball found his head. With the opponents tiny little men in the box, they were helpless to do anything - a bullet header from close range left their goalie with no chance. 3-1 to Die Lowen!!!

NOW I believed. I couldn't believe what a turnaround I had witnessed. How could I doubt my side now we got into this position. It was going to be an awfully tough task for Koln to get the confidence and self-belief to turn around a game away from their home turf.

58th Minute - A minute earlier Jorge Mere their centre-back got taken off. Still trying to organise themselves, the Munchen sucker punched hit. Some excellent quick interplay involving Bekiroglu, Djayo and our right back Paul who floated in a cross from the byline that oh yes - you guessed it, the giant 199cm 18 jumping Seydel put his head onto, glancing it into the far right corner. 4-1 to 1860 Munchen!!!

That plan of Koln to get one more goal for the away goals victory had just been ripped completely to shreds. Now they needed two goals....against our well organised side in the 4141 structure with confidence super high. Good luck :)

A taste of their own Medicine

Yes maybe we don't play high possession football, but I've drilled my lads to play effective football. And that is what we were today. Amounting 26 shots on goal to their 8, it certainly was a game of two legs. Koln dominating the first, but were unable to produce that slick passing game on our own turf.

And with our side having that real edge in height up top against a really small centre-back pairing, this is what proved to be the difference in the end.

With the game time flying by and Koln rarely threatening, we comfortably held on and did all the time-wasting playing for set pieces possible at the backend of the game.

And there it went, final whistle a 4-2 Aggregate win and Promotion to the Bundesliga for 1860 Munchen!

The Right Choice

In the summer I was left in a dilemma. There was another target man who agreed a contract to join but I only wanted one. It was a choice between someone around 186m but had a better allround game, or go for this giant - which not one team would be able to handle if he gets service. Very glad with the decision now :)

It's going to be a long Summer upcoming to get a squad to not get completely embarrassed in the top league. After some of our results against the promoted sides in Bundeliga 2, I'm still not optimistic. We just happened to prey on a real weakness Koln had.

Nevertheless, a real cash boost was needed for the club and now I have it. The board have also sounded their intention of building a new stadium as we are filling out our 15,000 capacity ground we currently play at.

So really exciting times ahead for the club, and looking forward to next season already.

Season 4 Preview

Media Prediction 18th

Board Aim: Fight bravely against relegation

My Aim: 15th

Bundesliga Here We Are!

After such a collective effort and achievement last year where everyone stood out doing their bit for the side, I’m jumping straight into our fourth season preview.

I think that given the screenshots of our squad vs Koln last season it would have been an inevitability we would have dropped straight back down.

So instead of going of the approach of going down and earning our little bit of bob, I have tried to invest where I could.

squad.png

Recruiting Method

It has always been tough every year to have a core squad that remains the same. At this club, after all my Summer dealings to try and improve the first team, it ultimately results in going well over budget.

So when it comes to renewing a player’s contract with 6 months to go, I never have the budget – which means they always run the risk of leaving.

It has been like this every season so far, and this one is no different. But with a larger budget and a few million pounds to splash out, my approach has been to look for the frees and anyone transfer listed by their club.

8 New First Teamers

The other aspect to consider was whether to keep the core side that brought us up together so there isn’t too drastic a change where it comes to team cohesion – or get a new side.

I’ve gone with the later, simply because the players aren’t good enough. I can only hope everyone gels together fairly quickly. Because a few bad defeats at the start of the year could see things spiral down very nastily.

Eyebrows are perhaps raised at the 1.7 million on one player. I wasn’t hoping to go much over 1 million tops for one. However our current DM is 32 years old and he’s not going to get any better. nor younger.

trans.png

Key Signings

Dominik Kohr is now 28 years old, but his attributes are very good for what he does – tasked to break up the play. I could get a few good years out of him, and if he helps to keep us up it will have been worth the investment.

My other key signing of worthy note is Rafael Czhichos. Coming in on a free, he’s now passed his peak at 32 years old. But we needed a true leader in our squad as he haven’t really had that since I’ve been at the club.

He will hopefully keep everyone’s heads together when the going gets tough, and he’s a solid defender as well. I’m not sure how long I can rely on him for, could be a one season wonder – we’ll see how he performs.

kohr.png

czichos.png

Fears – Zero Depth

It’s often the same, doing what I’m able to do. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get adequate numbers in for depth as I have been trying to improve our first team especially the spine.

We brought our new keeper in during last season on the free if you recall. We have our leader of a centre-back, our solid defensive midfielder, and with Bekiroglu and Seydel our target man both still at the club it looks like we have a spine here.

However any of my central midfielders get injured – we have a major problemo! No quality to come in whatsoever, and if any long term injuries come about after all the good work of last and the recruitment this year, it could all well come to nothing…

I also was not able to improve our offensive threat down the right flank in our first XI which is also now a weak area comparatively in the division.

Achieving the Miracle

Can we do the impossible and stay up first season in the Bundesliga? With all the recruitment done, my overview is this:

-Our defence if they gel quickly is as solid as it could be.

-Our midfield is really lacking in any depth, so a major injury will see us really struggle and would ruin our year.

-Our offence has improved on the left. But we do lack quality on the right and off the bench too.

So I can see us struggling to score goals and get a real hold of the game – which is not good. Our best hope is keeping teams out with our solidity at the back, and somehow hitting sides on the break, hoping our forward have a good day at the office and can put enough chances away to nick us wins.

But with a weak midfield starting a game, I can see too much pressure coming to our back-line to handle.

Let’s see how this plays out then….

Midway - Season 4

A Fighting Chance

17 games in, and my Die Lowen do have a fighting chance of staying in the division. Things did start very rocky, losing two games in quick succession to sides also expected to be battling against beating the drop.

However a 1-0 away win vs Wolsfburg got our season on track, and we were sitting in the top half of the table at one point.

But a 2 months injury to David Atanga meant our offence was significantly weaker and we weren’t scoring the goals we had been.

It has been as I predicted, with us being solid and needing to pinch games if we could. But we’ve now failed to win in four games and we’ve been sliding….

midp.png

Mental Strength

What was pleasing though was our ability to dig in at times. That starts all the way from the back with our keeper Bredlow who I have to give special praise for as he has been superb for me this year.

I guess though it is all relative – no stupid mistakes, and has excelled in some one vs ones.

Our leader at the back has been just that. Czichos leading our troops wonderfully well, and an example of the willingness to not give in is from being 2 goals down at home to Freiburg – turning the game on its head and eventually winning 4-2, though I’d like to think some of my subs played a hand too!

cback.png

A Tense Finish

However despite our good work until this point, we are still only three points above the drop zone….and so anything can happen, especially with our form not great and confidence on the lower side.

I hope the lads can pull through for us this year. It’s a big season if the club are able to proceed with their plans of perhaps investing in a brand new stadium, and also improving our football side on the pitch.

And myself, stayed true to the cause. Although offered a couple more jobs which must be a good six or now since I first became boss, I’m still with the club and hoping this project can continue to move forward at a good speed.

DFL Pokal - Quarters to come

So far we've had a really good run in the competition, including a 3-1 home win vs Borussia Dortmund. There does appear to be round prize money, so it's been good we have progress to now the quarter finals.

Unfortunately we've drawn you know who, FC Bayern with a Leroy Sane in their side. Our meeting at home this year didn't go well where we lost 1-0 after going down to 10 men.

So hard to be optimistic, but nevertheless our board wanted us to reach the second round and this box has been ticked. Our league status takes priority by far.

Five Games to Go

Winless run scuppers survival hopes

A dreadful run of form saw my Die Lowen slide down the table, although it felt more like a rapid plummet. Zero wins in twelve and a crisis has now dawned upon us.

Scoring goals has been a real problem. I guess lumping it up top on a regular basis at a high level just isn’t going to cut it. Well, not if you lack the quality to provide service nor have any technical ability to play things shorter.

Our squad being vastly inferior to the rest though, I’m not a lot sure what else can be done. It’s going to need an almighty turn of form to pull this one around.

However one date in the calendar is the home game vs Werder Bremen. They are still in our sights, but the pressure is on in these games, which adds more complexities to the situation itself. But we also still have Die Bayern away, which well is a lost cause at this moment in time.

Can we somehow pitch a late run of form together now we’ve gotten the worst out the way? Or at the very least finish third from bottom that keeps our hopes of survival alive to the playoff game?

Season 4 - Final Season Drama

Win Secures Bundesliga Status

It is becoming quite a habit now. Going into the final game we relied upon Werder Bremen failing to win, with ourselves having to secure all 3 points at home to 7th placed Eintracht Frankfurt.

However much like last year, the opponents of our closest rivals had something left to play for. Bremen had Freiburg who could also still go down and so had to avoid a defeat.

And us, Eintracht had already secured European football and couldn’t achieve anything further.

ftable.png

1-0 to the Arsenal

Not quite the Gunners in quality as yet – but the same result. It was our sixth 1-0 win of the season from the nine games we won all year.

We were the better side on the day. Having many more shots on goal and creating the only clear cut chance in the 90 minutes, it was our left winger Felipe Pires (or Robert maybe) who made the difference in the 69th minute.

Simplicity can be marvellous to watch sometimes. A pass onto the onrushing Atanga on the right flank, with space to move into he then crossed the ball back towards the far post finding our Summer signing free to guide his header into the far corner.

Holding on until the end of the game and with Bremen failing to dismountle Freiburg we catapulted ourselves into 13th spot! Which in itself brought us some extra needed cash.

1-0 ef.png

An Ageing Year

What I mean by this, is more white hairs are starting to appear after yet another tense end to the year. We’ve had luck on our side now in the last couple, although I’ve always liked to think you make your own luck.

If we want to avoid a real dog fight next year, it was clear to see even before the start of this season, that our offence needs massive improving upon. We scored the least number of goals in the league - staying up was a miracle.

A number of players contracts are expiring. I’ll end up getting rid of the majority of them, as such a shake up is needed if we are to try and move onto the next level. I can only hope the board will provide the necessary funds, and not invest too early in a larger stadium as we simply aren’t ready yet on the football pitch.

Such matters though completely remain out of my hands…..

bal.png

More like lucky recovery, and scenarios that probably prompted it :) We played well in a lot of games, but with a striker on 11 finishing composure and less anticipation goals were soooo hard to come by. Need someone better next year for sure at this level.

New Stadium Plans given the Go-Ahead

Some really positive news for the development of 1860 Munchen. Currently our home ground holds a capacity of 15,000.

The building plan when it does commence and finish will end up at just under the 23,000 mark.

It will take a few years to build though, but fortunately additional funding elsewhere is able to contribute to the cost of this 40.5 million stadium.

16/06/2026 it is due for completion.

Season 5 Preview

Expectations

Media Prediction 17th

Board Aim: Fight bravely against relegation

My Aim: 15th

pred.png

After last season’s heroics on the other side of the scale, not a lot has changed with media prediction and our board expectations.

I think this is probably about right. I’m still aiming to avoid playoffs / or relegation but nothing more.

With our leader of last year now no longer wanting a player role he has left the club to follow a coaching career.

Additionally players whose contracts were expiring and didn’t cut it have left the club. Replacing them has come in the form of investment and freebies – but all of which will have increased our wage budget spend.

Key Players

Ultimately we’ve been able to improve our first XI slightly. A midfielder in Sung who has some stronger attributes in places, notably work rate, fitness and willingness to work for the team. Although not a natural BBM, he can fill the role adequately with these attributes - whilst being technically sound.

And our new man up front Luca. A much more clinical finisher, greater composure in front of goal and also with the ability to pick out a pass - a plus for our inverted wingers going forward.

My aim was to eventually move to a shorter passing game utilising a deep lying forward instead of a target man. This in the hope where in a lot of games last year teams were putting us under severe pressure, we can play the ball out more from the back. And with the additional creativity in the final third of the pitch, be able to open teams up more freely.

Luca is a forward brought in to take us in this direction. Our current target man Seydel can also play the role, so it shouldn’t be too hard for him to adapt either - but lacks the vision compared to Luca.

And filling in at Cover centre-back for mr retired is signing Bornauw. Very strong in the air with 4 Belgian caps to his name.

He may not be perfect or have the leadership qualities of Czichos , but having a king in the air to complement our shorter ball player was much needed.

sung.png

luca.png

bornauw.png

The New Problem

Changing this approach means we technically will need to be that much better. I think our central midfielders can get away with it, especially with Sung now a starter and perhaps our wide players given we are still playing at a quicker tempo rather than probing when in possession.

But our two DMs are both very much workaholics with no passing ability or first touch whatsoever. I’m hoping by individual training implemented it will negate this negative to an extent, but it is not their natural game.

--

I couldn’t bare the thought of having another year like last year. Scoring goals is a must in a game of football, but knowing you don’t have a goalscorer on the pitch made it very hard work.

Hopefully the investment and slight change of our approach play will result in more goals being scored.

And with our overall additions especially in midfield, we are probably a more hard working side compared to last year. If everything comes together smoothly, it would be a great season if we can avoid a real dogfight. For me that would be a significant step forward whilst playing a more "winning" brand of football.

Xmas - Season 5

Down in the Dumps

The adaptation of style was a concern for me going into this year...and they are proving warranted. Defensively we have been poor, and although scoring more goals, it is not much more and we are letting too many in.

When I look at the value of our squad compared to the rest, we probably shouldn't be in the division. But it's no consolation due to the fact that we are.

Bayer 04 most recently offered me a job. Probably stupid to have turned it down - it looks like another miracle will be in order to turn this season around!

Injuries though have been more cruel to us this year. Our star midfielder that joined us missed over two months. We've not had a right back for a few games due to three being injured at the same time. It has been a rough ride.

Well the side have been together for half a season. They may now be more familiar with each other, but with confidence low it's not looking good.

Board buy 2 signings

Our board have decided to bring in two of their own signings to the club. Normally I'd be angry at not having control of this - however I can't complain at who they have brought in to the club, as both players are of better quality than what we have now - by an absolute mile!

Yeong is a experienced South Korean international at only 24 years of age. Can play either on the left or the right, and has an end product with his delivery which none of our players at the club have.

Pakia is a young German at 21 years of age. Able to play both flanks, but also as a striker. That instinct will mean a greater ability in front of goal compared to our current starters.

It could well be the tonic we need....

Five Games to Go

A tight finish awaits…

We scored 10 goals after the first half of games played. After 29 games, we’ve scored 15. This shows the clear difference in quality the two wingers brought in by the board have had for our side in the final third.

We were three points adrift of fourth from bottom which would both keep us up and avoid the playoffs. Now we are one point off. At least we won't automatically go down =- but I really want to avoid the tension of a playoff.

It’s oh so very compact at the bottom now. The fact we’re still laying in the red zone is a worry. However given the above, we most definitely have a chance of turning things around late on for the second year running.

Looking at the Premiership the 40 point mark is the goal. I guess the equivalent here would be 36 points – leaving us with 2 wins and a couple of draws away from the target.

I can’t quite see that happening. Maybe 2 wins and a draw at best. Paddenborn, Hoffenheim, Dortmund, Bayer 04 and Eintracht re the games left.

But there is a renewed hope…let’s see how it goes.

Moss Grateful to Board

Unbeaten in Final Five secures safety

A fantastic run at the end of the season from our boys kept us afloat for a second year. Remaining unbeaten by winning 2 and drawing 3, we ended up with a 37 points tally which hit the 36 points target I will now set ourselves each year. Well, hopefully for not too much longer!

You saw the real difference in quality the two new players the board brought in vs what we currently had at our disposal and it showed. It did give me hope, because the lack of quality was bound to bite us this year. The board recognised this - so well done to them. The right players in the correct positions.

We scored an extra five goals, but our defence also improved tremendously. I guess this can be attributed to the new defensive partnership and right full back needing time to adjust and used to playing with each other.

A Mid table side based on our second half of the season showing:

2h.png

graph.png

Time To Push On?

It is a shame the board wouldn’t make those funds available for me to use at the start of the year. With that said, they could have invested in areas that would have been less beneficial to us. They knew we needed more fire power, and that we got.

I would say they are the sort of calibre of a player that will be good enough to keep the side up. There have been sides with better quality players that have gone down yes, but they are capable guys.

This is the sort of standard I need across the board in all positions, and it needs to be an objective to bring in players where we are solid throughout the side. I then believe more consistent results will come.

We have just over 6 million available to spend, but not a huge wage budget to explore. The club though do seem to be better positioned to offer contracts to plays before the end of the year when it comes to a player wanting a higher wage. This is a real sign of financial progression.

Future Additions Planned

This means I should hopefully be able to try find a few additions to the bulk of our squad. Full-backs are an area that do need improving. But we'll also need a few midfielders within the next couple of season too, with Kohr and Yeong coming to the end of their best years.

So it will need to be wise spending this Summer. I don't yet have the luxury or solid squad where I can spend a larger sum on a single player. My aim is to be able to get to this point by the time our new Stadium is up and running in a few years time.

Season 6 Preview

Media Prediction 15th

Board Aim: Avoid Relegation

My Aim: Avoid a relegation battle

A Different Approach

We did well to navigate ourselves away from the drop zone last year. Well this year with our wage budget on the more positive side but lacking the funds to really buy top players, I’ve gone through the loan route.

Scrolling through the other clubs players values with jealousy comparing it to ours, I noticed clubs loaning a lot of very talent youngsters from abroad and domestically.

So I’ve sold off players in our squad that don’t cut it, and replaced them with young loan players.

I have a number of experienced players in the central defensive and midfield positions with a good goalkeeper. Hopefully the mix of experience and youth can bring some positive results this year. You can see some of the quality these youngsters bring with their considered ability rating.

With our shorter passing game and talented youngsters whom I’m sure will play with no fear, I’m quite optimistic about how this season will go.

squad.png

tac.png

Transfers

You’ll see we’ve done quite well to balance the books going this route. I did spend money on a couple of areas where there were no talented youngsters about, mainly in the defensive midfield and midfield positions.

Moker will play back up to Domink Kohr, and Bidstrop comes in for our free kick specialist Bekiroglu. I liked Bidstrop's PPMs, and I think even down the line he can be a good squad player for us. But this year I hope he steps up to the plate.

However with this change I’m hoping this won’t make us too weak at the set plays, because he was our main man with the free kicks. But now we don’t have a player that can really take them well, nor corners. I expect our set plays will suffer as a result.

But with playing a higher quality game of football with talented players in the XI, I’m hoping this will not hinder us too much and we can have a season without a struggle for once!

Half Way - Season 6

Nine Points to Go

A really good first half of the season for us and our young loanees. We've played some good football at times, whilst also defending poorly here and there. But looking at our overall goal difference there's not a lot to complain about really.

There have been times we've been in the European spots, but we haven't quite been good enough at times where in certain games based on how we have been playing we've lost or drawn matches rather than winning them.

These dropped points have cost us, but it is difficult to maintain a consistency with kids. I was quietly optimistic that a good year could culminate in a top half finish - let's see if we can carry on our good form for the rest of the season.

Our star performers so far have been Bornauw in central defence and our Danish international signing Bidstrom, who suits the system and has been a consistent performer for us as a result. Our best result? A 3-1 away to Borussia Dortmund - a result I wasn't expecting at all,

Five Games to Go

European Football A Possibility

Following a recent run of form of going five games unbeaten, with the same number of games left to play in the league we've moved into sixth spot in the table . An amazing achievement from the boys.

This was made especially harder with our best central defender Bornauew leaving on a release clause for 3.6 million to China - he wouldn't renew a contract with us as he didn't believe the club could meet his wage demands - greedy ******.

But turning a positive into a negative, we've got someone younger and better. And despite being only 20 years old, he's led the line at the back superbly well and is most suited to the stopper role better than anyone has done in my time at the club.

5g.png

Deadline Day Dealing

Aggressive in the tackle, great agility and balance, a superb tackler and reads the game well for so few years experience, Koray Unlu joined from RBL for only 4.5 million. He will likely play an important role at the club for a number of years while we continue to build our infrastructure and appeal - well that's the plan anyhow.

It has however meant I've decided to got with such a young pairing at centre-back. Reason being the other first team centre-back who is still at the club is also quite short, and an aerial presence is important for our back line.

But it's been working well this second half of the season, and I'm hoping this combination will see us through into Europe - a top 7 finish needed.

Die Lowen Secure Euro Cup Spot

A wonderful achievement for the club. Pipping Freiburg to 5th spot on goal difference, we kept our form up right until the end of the season despite a few injury problems that threatened to hamper our charge for Europe.

We may not be most heaviest scoring side, but defensively this year we were solid. The two kids on both full back positions Guillon and Bjarkason really did a good job, along with their backups who were assured enough when needed.

And then there was the ever improving striker on loan from Spurs Mandanda. He may have just got the nine goals but his technical ability and vision was a great asset to play off from.

I was hoping to try and secure the loan players for another season. We have been able to keep Mandanda and Felix Keller, the tall young centre-back that forced his way into our side in the later part.

Loan Full Backs Return to their Clubs

Unfortunately Bayern our rivals and Liverpool aren’t willing to re-loan their fullbacks. So that is going to be very tough to replace in the Summer.

Yeong in midfield has also passed his peak, and so we’ll need to try and find someone to replace him.

We may have 20 million to spend, three times as much as I have ever had at the club – but a lot of it will be trying to replace the players that have to return to their clubs, or positions that need regeneration in – along with depth for 3 competitions next year.

Aspirations

It is a bitter blow to have to replace two high quality full-backs for next season. With the extra competition to compete in, it is actually quite dangerous if we don’t have a large enough squad to play both this and league / cup competitions.

We lack depth as it is now, and we most certainly won’t be able to replace these guys. I expect next year to bring us back down to earth with a real big nasty bump at the end of it.

It would though be nice to progress to a decent stage in Europe. It’s an opportunity to continue to build funds so if we don’t maintain our position which is extremely likely, we’ll have something to fall back on.

A top half finish and a good Euro Cup run would satisfy me, and being a year closer to the completion of our stadium the club will be in a great position to try and push on again.

Up Die Lowren!
