Have you guys ever thought "Man, I'd really like to know how my favourite club's All Star team would be"? And have you ever wondered how amazing it would be to play with your club legends in some videogame?

Well, if everything turns out as expected, that day might come soon.

Me and a friend, mingonças, along with some other friends from FM Portugal, a portuguese Football Manager forum, have been working in this project for about two years, in which is surely the most ambitious project in the history of our small FM community.

Nostalgic and hopeless romantics as ever, we always dreamt about creating a database that could feature the players we saw in highlight videos from World Cup and Euro Cup tournaments from decades ago, and we absolutely marvelled at portuguese videos from the 80s and 90s with lots of players with funny names and unlikely brazilians that came out of nowhere to spread magic in the league from our country. Players that turned into myths and legends. We wanted to play with them in Football Manager, our favourite game.

Then, FMPT Legends Database turned into reality.

 • We started our database project by doing some kind of "market research". The idea of creating football legends in Football Manager was not something unique or really inovative, but most databases we found and tried out were pretty incomplete. They pretty much consisted in creating the best players ever and "mainstream" legends like Maradona, Cruyff, Pelé, Puskás, George Best, and didn't take into consideration the balance that would be necessary between good, powerful teams and weaker teams for that database to be realistic. Most weaker teams would still feature their current squads, and playing against All Star teams didn't seem fair. We wanted more, we wanted a really complete and extensive database. A fantasy database that felt real.
 • Our first move, before anything else, was to compile the All Star/All Time Great squad for each club that we intend to create in the database. Then, the first problem came up: as you guys know, Football Manager can't have duplicate players. There can only be one Cristiano Ronaldo. So we had to decide where to put players that were worthy of a legend status in more than one club, like Ronaldo, who could totally play for Manchester United or Real Madrid. We gave priority to: a) years spent at the club; b) goals scored or individual honours; c) team trophies won for the club in that period; and, in last resource, d) the importance the player would have in one of the All Star Teams. If he was the star of the club in one of them, we would choose that one for him to be a part of. So, as you see, pretty subjective issue, so we ask your comprehension and common-sense. Same applies with coaches and staff.
 • We limited the squads to a maximum of 30 players, to avoid creating huge, unplayable and unrealistic squads.
 • Another thing we took into account was the career history of each player. Every one of them will be "transported" to the season of their (again, subjective) prime. Take Deco, one of our favourite players, and his career as an example: Deco is made in the DB as his 25-year-old self, which corresponds to his 2003/04 Champions-League-winning season. So, the first season in the game will correspond to 2003/04, in this case only. That means that, in his career stats, 2015/16 will match to 2002/03, 2014/15 to 2001/02 and so forth.
 • We also created, rebuilt or adapted each country's competition structure or league system. Premier League, for example, will feature the 20 clubs with the most matches played in the first division of English football since 1888/89. In some other leagues, we took into consideration the most seasons spent or, with some of them lacking information in the Internet, the best position ever achieved in the first division of its country.
 • About continental competitions in the first playable year, the method is the same. Only to simplify things, we chose to maintain the current coefficients for every continental association. Then, the clubs with the most presences or matches in the first division of a country will qualify to Champions League and Europa League, and not the current champions or well positioned clubs in the previous season.
So, to sum it up after this long introduction, here's a list of what we have done so far in FMPT Legends Database, followed by a list of what we expect to have in the next version of the DB, and finally a list of some of the things we only expect to feature in later but surely doable versions.

What's Already Done:

 • Portuguese League and Portuguese 2nd Division;
 • La Liga;
 • Several players from the Premier League, Serie A and Bundesliga;
 • Several players from all around the world, mainly internationals;
 • Structured league systems for 16 countries;
What Will Feature In The Next Version

 • Premier League;
 • Serie A;
 • Full squads for teams that will participate in european competitions (except for some countries like Malta, Andorra or Macedonia);
 • At least 30 international players from teams that qualified to a World Cup or continental competitions (except some countries with less football tradition like Haiti, Indonesia or Zaire);
 • Several graphics (like kits, crests and faces) for the teams created at that point (we hope);
 • Corrections from the 1st version, mainly concerning some incorrect or incomplete career stats;
What We Plan To Do In The Future

 • Complete the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Eredivisie;
 • Complete the bigger clubs from Argentina and Brazil;
 • Feature some of the major south american clubs that qualify to Libertadores;
 • Feature some of the main teams from lower divisions from Europe's main countries (Championship, Serie B, Ligue 2...);
 • First Divisions from "mid-table" (please don't be mad) european countries like Austria, Belgium, Scotland, Hungary, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine...;
 • Try to apply the Cup Winners' Cup into the DB (we couldn't do it so far, and it seems impossible, but we'll try);
So... Here are some screenshots from players, coaches and league systems we made so far:

We would also like to show our appreciation for websites that were of invaluable importance to our work in this DB. Kudos to: Zerozero | Fora de Jogo | PES Stats Database | PES Miti del Calcio | PES Classics Stats| BD Fútbol | Pari-et-Gagne | Wikipedia and, of course, the Reddit community, mainly /r/reddevils, /r/chelseafc, /r/NUFC and /r/psg.

We tried to be as thorough, exhaustive, objective and precise as possible in every phase of our work. But we had a lot of fun along the journey. We hope you like our idea and appreciate our work, and if you try it, please give us suggestions concerning issues you think that can be improved. Thank you for your time!
