BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - A Buenos Aries emergency medical official says a fan has died at a match between Argentina first division clubs Velez and San Lorenzo, forcing the Sunday match to be called off.

The circumstances surrounding the death are not clear. The dead man was described as "about 40" and a fan of San Lorenzo.

The match was suspended after seven minutes when referee Sergio Pezzotta noticed violent disturbances in the stands.

Nasty, RIP. This happens every now and then, but it doesn't make it any less tragic.

RIP:(
that wasnt a football match, that looked more like a prison riot ffs:@
things like this shouldnt happen:@

Idiots, but i expect nothing less from South American countries, except misplaced passion for their teams. R.I.P to the gentlemen that died.:(

Argentinian rivalries are very heated, and tempers often flare. Nevertheless, RIP.

In Brazil this happens also.. i am not really sure if the WC in Brazil is a good idea... but that's just me :S

very sad news. it's unclear how he died tough, police says that he had a heart attack, but medics say the body has a lot of bruises. others says it was Velez's barra brava (hooligans) and his wife says the police killed him. we'll know with the autopsy if he died from natural causes :(

Seeing those videos, i would not like to be the goalkeeper

and R.I.P to the fan that died :S

Rivalries in Argentina and Brazil are way, way worse than in the rest of the world. A pity, I couldn't enjoy my teams victory tonight due to this. Can't help but feel sad for the guy and his family, things like these end up ruining football for everyone.

Guys, there is one fact that was omitted in the news. The guy was actually killed by the police!!!

That isn't known for certain. It is claimed by the police that he had a heart attack when he was being checked for weapons. Don't point the finger until the truth is known.

//Edit - Don't get me wrong, not many people hate the Argentinian police as much as I do, but I don't like to accuse people based on rumours, until they're confirmed.

RIP.
But anyone else think that at the start, all the fans are sort of creating a brilliant atmosphere? Jumping around and singing as loud as they can. Then they ruin it by being violent :(

RIP

as for the others, they aren't football fans, they are thugs simple as. there is a difference between being a passionate fan and acting like a complete ***.

As a south American, it makes me wonder about why this happens, and, in my opinion, it's the Barras Bravas/Torcidas Organizadas fault. Getting supporters together to sing, dance and show the fans' opinion about the club politics is a great idea, but it's like communism, simply won't happen. Or at least not all of them are there for this. In Brazil, People from Gaviões da Fiel (Corinthians' organizada, The "Hawks"), after Corinthians was knocked out from Libertadores((H)), threw rocks at the teams bus and the player's cars... Palmeiras' bigger organizada, the Mancha Verde(The Green Stain), also has its "Hoolingan moments". Of course, it's amazing when they get together to help the team, but, sometimes, some of them are there just to get in fights like that.
About the World Cup in Brazil, that's nothing to worry about, I mean, it's a World Cup, and the Olympic Games 2 years later. I don't know how people from Europe thing Brazil is, but there's simply no way that this will happen(Maybe if it's a Brazil x Argentina final some people may not live to see the end of the match(6) Just joking).

I just can't understand why people prefer to spend their money with stuff from the Barras Bravas or Organizadas than buying stuff from the club:P

Autopsy revealed the fan had been hit, possibly by the police, but it wasn't fatal. Official COD is pulmonary and cerebral edema.
