Exit Martin Jol, Enter Tom Delgado...Wait, Who?

June 31, 2011 - Martin Jol has resigned his post as Fulham manager to pursue non-footballing interests. Basically, he wants to spend more time with his family before taking another job. Fulham chairman Mohammed Al Fayed did not waste any time with finding Jol's replacement. It's 26 year old Tom Delgado, a former footballer who has been serving as a coach of 10-12 year olds back in the United States. For a first time manager in a new country, Delgado's making some big money. His contract is worth an estimated 2.8 million US per year until 2013.

Delgado's first match in charge will be the 2nd leg of the 2011 Europa League First Qualifying Round 2nd leg match at Flamurtari (Albania).

OOC: 12.2.0 Update DB, no work permits. I have already played a few matches and signed a few players, so those signings and match results will be on the next post, which will be the pre-season report.

UEFA Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round, 1st Leg
Referee: Wolfgang Stark (GER)

Welcome to Craven Cottage in London for tonight's UEFA Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round match between Fulham & Omonia Nicosia. The starting elevens for each team were announced moments ago, so let's tell you who's in and who's out.

Fulham
Manager: Tom Delgado (USA)

M. Dembele
Duff -------- Dempsey ---- Ruiz
-------- Murphy ---- Etuhu -----
--------------------------------
J. Riise ---- Baird ---- Hangeland ---- Grygera
Schwarzer

Subs: D. Stockdale (GK), A. Hughes, Senderos, M. Gecov, Sidwell, Pogrebnyak, A. Johnson

Omonia Nicosia
Manager: Neofytos Larkou (CYP)

Freddy ---- Andre Alves
--------------------------------
Bergougnoux ---- Aguiar ---- Salatic ---- Makridis
--------------------------------
Ben-Dayan ---- Bouzon ---- Karypidis ---- Shpungin
Giorgallidis

Subs: D. Jevric (GK), Cherfa, Renato Margaca, Avraam, Aloneftis, N. Kaseke, Rasheed Alabi

KICK OFF: It's time! Omonia gets us started, but they lose the ball pretty quickly.

4th Minute: Early chance for Fulham here as Etuhu has the ball. He gets brought down by Aguiar, and that's a free kick. Baird whips the free kick in, and Danny Murphy's got it. Murphy tries a long range shot, but that's nowhere near. Off the ensuing goal kick, Hangeland gets possession as Omonia try to get something going. The ball ends up with Ruiz who gets into the penalty area and somehow after a fierce shot from Bryan Ruiz, Giorgallidis got his hands to it and cleared it.

13th Minute: Fulham have played keep away since the Ruiz chance in the 4th minute. Now it's Murphy again with the ball, intercepting the clearance from Karypidis. He tries a volley, but there's nothing there.

15th Minute: Fulham are clearly the better side thus far, as they have another chance. This time, Dempsey gets the pass from Ruiz and he looks at the top corner, but it's inches wide and Omonia are breathing a sigh of relief for now.

36th Minute: Between the 15th minute and now, Fulham have had a majority of half chances not worth writing home about. However, this one was more than a half chance. Dempsey again has the goal at his mercy, as Giorgallidis looks like he's about to wet himself. Once again though, Dempsey's left-footed blast is off by just a hair. Should have been 1-0 Fulham right there. In fact, it probably should be 3 or 4-nil Fulham at this rate. Omonia are getting away easy because of Fulham's erratic shooting. Pretty sure Delgado will have a word with his players about that at the half.

HALF TIME: Speak of the devil. The rest of the first half was uneventful, and although they've been the dominant side, with 11 shots (4 on target) to Omonia's 1 shot (0 on target), there's nothing to show for it. Nil-Nil at the break.

Fulham 0 - 0 Omonia Nicosia (HT)

2nd Half KICKOFF - We kick off the 2nd half, and there's a change. Fulham have switched some players around, and have taken off Bryan Ruiz in favor of Andy Johnson. Ruiz was looking tired at the end of the first half, and Delgado is not taking any chances.

53rd Minute - GOAL!!! Ball in the net, and it's the midfielder Etuhu depositing it in the First National Bank of Goal. Off a free kick, Damien Duff found Murphy after getting by Shpungin. Murphy then made a good pass to Etuhu and the midfielder from Nigeria made some nice dribbles, bringing the ball forward then taking a powerful shot headed towards the top corner. Giorgallidis can't get to this one even if he had one of those grabbers that old people use! It's 1-0 Fulham, as they finally get the breakthrough they wanted!

61st Minute: Fulham probably should have made it 2-0 here. Off the corner, Dempsey had a chance but got denied by the post. He tried to get the rebound, but Bergougnoux got to the ball first and cleared it, allowing Omonia to make a substitution.

(61st Minute) SUBSTITUTION: Noel Kaseke comes on for Veroljub Salatic, who's had a very anonymous game. A 6.1 in our book. Chin up, lad.

65th Minute: Quick chance for Hangeland, but he puts it over the bar. This allows Omonia to make another substitution.

(67th Minute) SUBSTITUTION: Iago Bouzon comes off, having had a poor game. In comes Rasheed Alabi, who doesn't look too confident as it is.

(69th Minute) SUBSTITUTION: Fulham make their second swap of the match. This time it's Murphy off after a solid game. Steve Sidwell will come on for the remaining 20-plus minutes.

80th Minute: GOAL!!! The referee has played his way into the headlines! It's a goal for Fulham. Andy Johnson is credited with the goal, but we have Kaseke having a tantrum on the pitch claiming offside! This ref is smart though, he's not having any of it and the goal stands! Two-Nil Fulham.

90 + 2 Minute: We're well into stoppage time, but Fulham are looking for a third, and they appear to find it! Dembele's got this one...no he doesn't! The flag's up and it looks like he was offside! Sidwell is furious about the call, but once he looks at the replay, maybe he'll realize that Dembele was slightly offside.

FULL TIME: Wolfgang Stark blows for full time, and it's a 2-0 win for Fulham. It probably should have been 5 or 6-nil, but that's football. I'm sure Tom Delgado will be satisfied to get the win anyway. The match stats tell the grim tale for Omonia, who will be relieved to get out of Craven Cottage only down 2-0 in the tie. Fulham had 21 shots to Omonia's 1. Fulham got 9 of them on target, while Omonia failed to get their only shot anywhere close to Schwarzer. Speaking of Schwarzer, at times it looked like he was leaning against the post taking a wee nap. He could have gotten away with it too tonight, Omonia were not a threat in the slightest. The 15,979 who came out to watch this match will go home happy with the win, except for the few hundred that Omonia brought from Cyprus.

Fulham 2 - 0 Omonia Nicosia - FT
UEFA Man of the Match - John Arne Riise (Fulham)

Match Ratings
Schwarzer - 6.8 (His napping was exquisite.)
Grygera - 7.7 (Good job all around.)
Hangeland - 7.5 (Drew 3 fouls and had 2 pretty decent shots on goal. Not too shabby.)
Baird - 7.3 (Did his job in the middle to make sure Omonia didn't threaten.)
Riise - 7.7 (Won 4 of his 6 tackles tonight and was very solid on the left side.)
Etuhu - 7.5 (Scored the first goal for the Cottagers, won all 3 of his headers tonight.)
Murphy - 6.8 (Solid in the midfield before coming off in the 68th.)
Ruiz - 6.8 (Was a bit unlucky to not have a goal or two before coming off after the first half.)
Dempsey - 6.2 (Had a few opportunities, could not convert on any of them. Other than that, fairly anonymous.)
Duff - 6.8 (With 2 crosses completed, he led the team in that stat. That's gotta count for something.)
Dembele - 6.8 (Probably unlucky not to score a goal, but he was definitely offside on that stoppage time "goal". Not by much though.)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Sidwell - 6.8 (Did what he had to do when he came on. Completed all his passes.)
A. Johnson - 7.3 (Scored the 2nd goal in the 80th minute that put the game out of reach. Then again, it was out of reach at 1-0 because Omonia were so pathetic offensively.)

Fulham Sign Mexican Starlet Carlos Fierro

Fulham announced the signing of 17 year old Mexican wonderkid Carlos Fierro from Chivas. The highly rated Mexican striker, who has been labeled as the next Luis Hernandez, signs from the 11-time Mexican Primera Division champions for a transfer fee of $2 million US after agreeing a professional contract with the London-based club. He is set to make $200,000 per year until 2014.

Fulham manager Tom Delgado admitted that Fierro could play some part in their Premier League campaign this season. "Carlos is a wonderful talent, I'm very happy to have signed him. I feel he can play a small part in our season, we just have to let him get his feet wet at the club before we consider putting him out there" Delgado said of Fierro.

"I am very happy to be here at Fulham Football Club, and I'm eager for a chance to contribute to my manager's cause. I can't wait to suit up for all the Fulham fans and give them my very best" Fierro said in surprisingly fluent English. He will definitely not play any part of Fulham's 2nd leg match against Omonia Nicosia, as he is currently on international duty with the Mexico U-20's. However, as he is under 20 years old, he does not need to be registered for Premier League or Europa League competition, thus he is eligible to play right out of the box, although Delgado has already said he will not rush Fierro into first team action.

OOC WARNING: Another match write-up, this should be long. Again, this is a warning if you don't like long-winded posts. :p

UEFA Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd Leg (Fulham leads 2-0 on aggregate)
Referee: Jochen Drees (GER)

Welcome to the GSP Stadium in beautiful Nicosia in Cyprus. Tonight we're here for the 2nd leg of the 3rd Qualifying Round tie between Omonia Nicosia and Fulham FC. Fulham take a 2-0 aggregate lead into this match by virtue of their dominant performance at Craven Cottage. On that note, let's see what both teams have to offer as far as starting elevens go.

Omonia Nicosia
Manager: Neofytos Larkou (CYP)

Freddy ---- Andre Alves
--------------------------------
Bergougnoux ---- Leandro ---- Salatic ---- Makridis
--------------------------------
Ben-Dayan ---- Bouzon ---- Karypidis ---- Shpungin
Giorgallidis

SUBS: Jevric (GK), T. Kyprou, Avraam, S. Cherfa, D. Christofi, Aloneftis, Renato Margaca

Fulham
Manager: Tom Delgado (USA)

Dembele ---- A. Johnson
--------------------------------
B. Ruiz ---- Murphy ---- Sidwell ---- C. Zuniga
--------------------------------
Matthew Briggs ---- Hughes ---- Hangeland ---- Grygera
Schwarzer

SUBS: Stockdale (GK), Halliche, Senderos, J. Arne Riise, Baird, Dempsey, Pogrebnyak

It's a slightly different look for the Cottagers, who seem to be experimenting a bit as they try to get ready for the Barclays Premier League season. Either way, this is a must-win for Omonia, and they must make sure Fulham do not score to give themselves the best chance of winning the tie and advancing.

KICK OFF: Fulham kick off, and we're underway at GSP.

10th Minute: GOAL!!! It's the visitors who strike first, exactly what Omonia did NOT want! Dembele ran onto a beautiful pass from Danny Murphy, and it was all too easy for Dembele to make some space and put it into the net. The tie is already just about over and we're only in the 10th minute! Omonia 0, Fulham 1 (0-3 agg.)

17th Minute: GOAL!!! If it was almost over 7 minutes ago, it's completely over now. A costly mistake by Ben-Dayan to turn the ball over in his own half to Andy Johnson. When you give a quality striker like Andy Johnson that kind of gift, he's not going to put it in the closet and wait until Christmas to open it! Instead, he'll open it right now and laugh at you for making it way too easy for him! Omonia pay the price, and I'd say the tie is in the bag. Omonia 0, Fulham 2 (0-4 agg.)

30th Minute: GOAL!!! What's this? An actual Omonia attack? Wait a minute...Schwarzer's sleeping, wake up mate! Too late! Leandro grabs a goal back for the home side after a wonderful run off the pass from Andre Alves. The shot came low towards the goal, and Schwarzer was probably still a bit groggy from the last match and his 90 minute nap so he missed it completely. Omonia are gonna need a lot more than that to beat Fulham in this tie though. Omonia 1, Fulham 2 (1-4 agg.)

36th Minute: GOAL!!! It's raining goals here at GSP! Now Omonia are back in the eye of the storm, as Bryan Ruiz is making up for all those unlucky shots back at Craven Cottage. Nice passes from Zuniga and Murphy gave Ruiz a wonderful opportunity, and this time, Ruiz has his scoring boots on! Low towards the goal, Giorgallidis was rooted to his spot, and offered absolutely no resistance. Maybe it's time to go to the backup, guys. Omonia 1, Fulham 3 (1-5 agg.)

45th Minute + 2: GOAL!!! Okay, now it's getting ugly. It's an own goal as Bouzon tried to take the ball away from Johnson in the penalty area, but it somehow ends up in the back of his own net! It goes down as an own goal, and that just about sums it up in the first half for Omonia. One stroke of brilliance from Leandro, the rest of the team seems defeated already. This isn't gonna help matters. Omonia 1, Fulham 4 (1-6 agg.)

HALF TIME: Fulham go in with a huge lead in the match, and the aggregate. Expect Tom Delgado to pull some of his regulars that are already in and give players on the bench a chance to impress. As for Omonia, unless they've got a magical 6 goal comeback in them, they can focus on the Cypriot A Division. It's Omonia 1, Fulham 4 in the match, and Omonia 1, Fulham 6 in the aggregate.

Omonia 1 - 4 Fulham (1-6 agg.) - HT

2nd Half Changes: Fulham make 3 substitutions, apparently hearing us here on our live internet coverage. It's Senderos on for Hughes, Riise on for Bryan Ruiz, and Pavel Pogrebnyak runs on to replace Andy Johnson.

2nd Half KICKOFF: If Omonia have anything in them, they'll need to show it. They kick off.

58th Minute: GOAL!!! Well, it's 5-1 Fulham. Omonia continues to crumble in the presence of relentless pressure from the Cottagers. It's an excellent through ball from Riise to Dembele, who used his superior pace to blaze by the Omonia defense, and place a superb shot past the goalkeeper, who looks like he could use a few pies at this point. That's Dembele's 2nd of the match, and it's Fulham's 5th. Omonia 1, Fulham 5 (1-7 agg.)

70th Minute: GOAL!!! I sure hope Sky Sports didn't have Chris Kamara reporting on this match, because then he'd be subject to laughter from the SSN crew. Why? Easy. It's one of the guys whose name only Jeff Stelling can pronounce properly who gets on the scoresheet, Pavel Pogrebnyak! It's pronounced Po-greb-nee-ak! It was a half-volley from his right foot, and it's like the goalkeeper's not even trying anymore. Easily a saveable shot, but it ends up in the back of the net. Let's just say that Antonis Giorgallidis will not show up on Tom Delgado's shortlist anytime soon, because we may have had a homicide on the pitch if that was a Fulham player ******* it like that. Omonia 1, Fulham 6 (1-8 agg.)

FULL TIME: Thankfully, from that 6th goal on, Fulham took the foot off the gas, and actually let Omonia have one decent attack, but it came to nothing, and apparently we didn't see it because we had Dean Windass syndrome. Yes, we weren't concentrating. Then again, it's pretty easy to lose your focus when you're watching a drubbing like this. It's full time here at GSP, and it's been ugly if you're an Omonia Nicosia fan. If you're a Fulham fan, you're happy tonight because your team's advancing, and of the 12,034 in attendance, I'd say about 1,500 of them are leaving happy. Fulham travel pretty well, even for these lesser known ties. Omonia 1, Fulham 6 (1-8 agg.)

Omonia Nicosia 1 - 6 Fulham FC (Fulham win 8-1 on Aggregate) FT
UEFA Man of the Match: Moussa Dembele (Fulham)

Match Ratings
Schwarzer - 7.0 (Only had to make two saves, but made just one of them. In the second half, his napping was once again top caliber. He's a contender for the all-snooze team.)
Grygera - 7.8 (A very good game for him, marred by getting booked in the 85th minute with the game already long since over.)
Hangeland - 7.8 (The entire Fulham defense gets a gold star tonight. We'll give Hangeland two of them.)
Hughes - 6.8 (Came out at the half, so he loses his gold star to Hangeland. We'll give Hughes a few pies as a consolation prize though.)
Briggs - 7.7 (Excellent performance from the 20 year old. He could potentially stick on the squad this season, and it's great to see.)
Zuniga - 8.6 (An extremely impressive debut for the former Napoli man. Grabbed himself an assist, and almost had a goal for himself as well. Definitely more to come from Fulham's new star.)
Sidwell - 7.6 (He came up lame late in the proceedings with a knock. We're not sure how severe it is, but we'll find out in a day or so. Good performance though.)
Murphy - 9.3 (3 assists isn't anything to sneeze at, no matter who you play. Splendid performance from the 34-year old fan favourite.)
Ruiz - 8.1 (Got to take an early shower tonight, and was grateful for it. Scored a goal too, so he'll sleep well tonight.)
Johnson - 7.5 (Probably should have gotten credit for the own goal, but he won't sneeze at a goal and an early night. He'll be ready for the Premier League opener for sure.)
Dembele - 9.3 (Your UEFA man of the match. With two goals, I'd say he earned it, but you can make a really strong case for Murphy. Either way, great performance.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Senderos - 6.8 (Had nothing to do. Oh well, at least he seemed to enjoy the runout.)
J. Arne Riise - 7.0 (Nabbed an assist late in the proceedings, so it was a very productive 45 minutes of football.)
Pogrebnyak - 7.3 (Scored off the bench. Made a pretty strong case to feature in Tom Delgado's plans this season.)

I love it when I lose power while writing up the next match. I will have to replay the Premier League opener against Liverpool. Hopefully I will have that up during the night here in the US. If not, sometime tomorrow.

Also, been rather sick over the past few days, so that's another cop out for no updates from me :p

Liverpool - Fulham hopefully going up tonight though, so chin up :)

Liverpool vs Fulham - FulhamFC.com Goal by Goal Coverage
Attendance: 45,362
Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Newcastle)

This is Anfield, and this is the start of the 2011-2012 Barclays Premier League campaign. Fresh off an 8th placed finish last season, Fulham look to get their 2011-2012 campaign off to a winning start against a motivated Liverpool side who finished out of the European places, a place Fulham got due to topping the Fair Play table. Let's look at the starting lineups and see how it all plays out today.

Liverpool
Manager: Kenny Dalglish (SCO)

Suarez ----- Bellamy
----------------------------------
Downing ---- Keita ---- Lucas Leiva ---- Kuyt
----------------------------------
Jose Enrique ---- Agger ---- Skrtel ---- Glen Johnson
----------------------------------
Reina

SUBS: Doni (GK), Carragher, N. Dyer, Maxi Rodriguez, Coates, Carroll, Naismith

Fulham
Manager: Tom Delgado (USA)

A. Johnson ----- Dempsey
----------------------------------
Ruiz ---- Jali ---- Murphy ---- Zuniga
----------------------------------
J. Riise ---- Hangeland ---- Baird ---- Grygera
----------------------------------
Schwarzer

SUBS: Khune (GK), Briggs, Halliche, Senderos, Etuhu, Duff, Pogrebnyak

KICK-OFF!!! - Fulham get our goal by goal coverage underway.

20th Minute - GOAL!!! It's for the visitors as Andy Johnson creates an incredible chance for Camilo Zuniga, and even he can't miss from such an opportunity. Reina rooted to the spot. Liverpool 0, Fulham 1.

27th Minute - GOAL!!! Liverpool hit back a few minutes after falling behind, and it's thanks to Lucas Leiva. From their kick-off after the goal, they dominated the run of play, and it led to a breakdown in defense, allowing Suarez to play Baird like a fiddle. It left Leiva wide open, and the rest was history. Schwarzer will be yelling at his defense for letting him down there. Liverpool 1, Fulham 1

Half Time - Fulham will go in the happier side, deadlocked at 1. Will we see any changes from either manager?

Liverpool 1 - 1 Fulham - HT

2nd Half kick-off - A pair of changes for Liverpool after the break. Andy Carroll comes on for Stewart Downing, while Jamie Carragher comes on for Martin Skrtel.

58th Minute - GOAL!!! Liverpool dominates the early going, and are eventually rewarded with Seydou Keita depositing a corner. Fulham's defending has been somewhat sloppy all match, and once again it has cost them dearly. Liverpool 2, Fulham 1.

62nd Minute - SUBSTITUTIONS: Fulham make a double swap of their own, taking off the ineffective Chris Baird in favor of Phillipe Senderos. Meanwhile, an equally ineffective Clint Dempsey is pulled after a poor showing, to be replaced by Pavel Pogrebnyak.

65th Minute - GOAL!!! The defensive change didn't help matters at all. Andy Carroll tears apart the abysmal Fulham defensive unit, leaving Schwarzer stranded and hopeless. He wishes they were playing Omonia instead, because he looks like he could use a nap. Carroll shows why Liverpool paid so much for him from Newcastle, and puts this game just about out of reach. Liverpool 3, Fulham 1.

FULL TIME. - A dire defensive show from Fulham ensure that they come away from their trip to Anfield today with absolutely nothing. Liverpool's quality shone through, and the hosts come away with a solid victory. It'll be interesting to see how Delgado picks up his team after they fell apart in the 2nd half today.

Liverpool 3 - 1 Fulham - FT

Barclays Man of the Match - Camilo Zuniga (Fulham)

Player Ratings
Schwarzer - 6.7 (Letting in 3 goals doesn't help, but it's not all his fault. All the blame can be tossed at the defense today.)
Grygera - 6.3 (Played his part in letting in those three goals. Was ineffective on the right.)
Baird - 5.2 (Horrible showing for the 29 year old. Expect a benching, and maybe a fine for poor performance, since I'm sure coach Delgado will not take this lightly.)
Hangeland - 6.0 (Just like the rest of the Fulham defense, he let down Schwarzer in a big way. If it weren't for the entire back four, maybe Fulham would have won today.)
Riise - 6.7 (Wasn't spectacular, but was the only defender who actually showed shades of competent defending.)
Zuniga - 7.7 MoM (Despite picking up a knock at the very end of the match, did very well for himself, scoring the club's only goal.)
Murphy - 6.1 (Could not generate any chances or stop any attacks cold before the backline could crumble before them. Knows he has to do better.)
Jali - 6.6 (Quiet debut, could not generate much, but when you're playing in a new, much tougher league than you have been, you can get away with a quiet performance like this.)
Ruiz - 6.8 (Isn't a natural midfielder, but played his part solidly. Helped create the Zuniga goal.)
Dempsey - 6.0 (Had a hard time getting anything going. At least he completed 100% of his crosses, i.e. 1 for 1.)
A. Johnson - 6.9 (Was credited with the assist on the Zuniga goal. Other than that, not a factor. Only got a 6.9 because of that assist.)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Senderos - 6.7 (The defense was in pieces by the time he came on, he couldn't help out nearly enough.)
Pogrebnyak - 6.7 (Not much he could do, but he did get both his shots on target. At least he tried.)

POST-MATCH FALLOUT!

Tom Delgado tore into his team in the locker room after their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. He singled out Chris Baird as his verbal punching bag. Baird would not comment about what Delgado said to him, claiming it was not something that could be repeated on TV. According to reports, Delgado will fine Baird two weeks wages, and we assume he will be benched for the foreseeable future. Perhaps this is the chance for Senderos to find his way into the lineup and prove he still has some value?

Official warnings were handed out to the following for their poor performances: Zdenek Grygera, Brede Hangeland, Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey
