Hi

My tactic in football manager 16 has always been a compressed, deep 4-4-2. One very similar to Ranieri's winning Leicester team and Diego simeone's legendary philosophy. I create an incredible amount of chances in a game (usually about 6-7 1 v 1s). I score about 1/4. The game seems never to work quite right in these situations. What usually happens is the player blasts it with full power straight at the keeper, or tries to dissect the crossbar. About 1/10 times he passes it to the other (completely unmarked) striker next to him for a tap in. About 1/20 times he curls the ball into the corner of the goal, about 1/50 he goes past the keeper and taps it in.

Whenever a player scores from a 1 v 1, I am genuinely surprised. Seeing that 1 v 1s are the majority of my chances, I usually draw 0-0 or lose 1-0 when the team play averagely. When I have a successful victory say 3-0, 5-0 I have scored a large amount of longshots/spectacular efforts, but as my midfielders rarely get around the box, these are rare.

I have tested this tactic throughout all levels of Football Manager. PSG, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Sudanese Premier Division, V-League 1, Rangers, A-League and it never seems to quite work. It just doesn't feel right. I am not a fool who whines about CCC in the match stats. I watch the full game.

The most succesful teams at the moment (Leicester/Atletico madrid) are thriving off players easily finishing their one on one chances. In this game Messi does not even consistently score them. Leicester city would put a through ball into Vardy's feet and he would score one v one, that was how they won the title, he would only get one or two a game. In FM 2016 that would be impossible.

It seems the game enjoys long-shots of shots just on the box line. Or somehow a winger being able to lose two defenders and cross it to a 5'9 striker who out-jumps Jonas Olsson and heads it in. Rebounds off set pieces are also popular. The most successful tactics in the game are ones that utilise these. ie: wingback formations (3-1-4-1-2) have a large amount of players on the edge of the box constantly.

I am still succesful in the game, I just think it's silly to see Fernando Torres or Antoine Griezmann (a 1 v 1 specialist [watch his 15/16 season if you disagree]) miss 3 or 4 one v ones per game, then the ball fall for Koke who thrashes an absolute howitzer in from halfway and beat the keeper.

I agree with the part of the fact that one on ones are easily missed in this game, the problem is that there are too many one on ones in the game for the majority to go in. This needs to be dealt with by making there less one on ones and then scoring 9/10 with the good players. The problem lies in the match engine rather than the game itself and that problem means that certain tactics will always be more abusable than others.

I find with tactics that you are talking about in real life each game would consist of maybe 2 one on ones a game with more only coming against the worst teams in the league. Thus for 3 or 4 in a game you can expect to miss a lot.

The match engine seems built for counter attacking however, there are problems with this in itself.

1. have you tried teaching specific finishing PPM's to your strikers? 'Places shots' seems the most effective and could make a difference for your strikers.

2. you mind sharing your tactic? I actually struggle to get strikers 1 vs 1 chances and only manage to score via crosses, would love to experience your frustration XD

I used too flat 442 or 442 with 2 deep midfielder. I use both depends on the opponents, the players who will play but occasionally changed amid the match. In 1st season i am not concede any goals but torres-griezmann just make few goals. Eventually in 2nd season i change the tactic more fluid than before. And i change 2 striker role in front. Because the problem in 1st season when i use CF and DLF, both players doesn't track back to help defense but still awaiting in front and it makes too long gap between frontline with the midfield and the ball was unefective flowing was disaster. And i change the role to DF and F9 duet and it was resolving the problem. They want to press in front but want track back too even one of them made the pressing too for help the midfield and defender
