Hi
My tactic in football manager 16 has always been a compressed, deep 4-4-2. One very similar to Ranieri's winning Leicester team and Diego simeone's legendary philosophy. I create an incredible amount of chances in a game (usually about 6-7 1 v 1s). I score about 1/4. The game seems never to work quite right in these situations. What usually happens is the player blasts it with full power straight at the keeper, or tries to dissect the crossbar. About 1/10 times he passes it to the other (completely unmarked) striker next to him for a tap in. About 1/20 times he curls the ball into the corner of the goal, about 1/50 he goes past the keeper and taps it in.
Whenever a player scores from a 1 v 1, I am genuinely surprised. Seeing that 1 v 1s are the majority of my chances, I usually draw 0-0 or lose 1-0 when the team play averagely. When I have a successful victory say 3-0, 5-0 I have scored a large amount of longshots/spectacular efforts, but as my midfielders rarely get around the box, these are rare.
I have tested this tactic throughout all levels of Football Manager. PSG, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Sudanese Premier Division, V-League 1, Rangers, A-League and it never seems to quite work. It just doesn't feel right. I am not a fool who whines about CCC in the match stats. I watch the full game.
The most succesful teams at the moment (Leicester/Atletico madrid) are thriving off players easily finishing their one on one chances. In this game Messi does not even consistently score them. Leicester city would put a through ball into Vardy's feet and he would score one v one, that was how they won the title, he would only get one or two a game. In FM 2016 that would be impossible.
It seems the game enjoys long-shots of shots just on the box line. Or somehow a winger being able to lose two defenders and cross it to a 5'9 striker who out-jumps Jonas Olsson and heads it in. Rebounds off set pieces are also popular. The most successful tactics in the game are ones that utilise these. ie: wingback formations (3-1-4-1-2) have a large amount of players on the edge of the box constantly.
I am still succesful in the game, I just think it's silly to see Fernando Torres or Antoine Griezmann (a 1 v 1 specialist [watch his 15/16 season if you disagree]) miss 3 or 4 one v ones per game, then the ball fall for Koke who thrashes an absolute howitzer in from halfway and beat the keeper.
