Northern League Division Two outfit Team Northumbria have appointed ex-England Legend and ’Match of the Day’ favourite Gary Lineker as their new manager.
Northumbria had been without a manager since parting company with Chris Turner after a disappointing 2nd season in the Northern League Division two after joining in 2006/07 season.
The appointment surprised many people but the TN chairman Craig Denton said he was confident Lineker would boost the club’s league standing.
Team Northumbria finished 12th last season behind rivals Hebburn Town.
The final league standing was a shock to many fans who where hoping for promotion which led to massive pressure from the fans on the chairman to sack the manager with chants of ‘You’re not fit to manage us’ ringing around the coach lane stadium at the final game of the season.
Denton said the new boss would be tasked with developing local talent with a view of adding them to the playing squad.
“Like all fans i was disappointed with our last season,” Denton told us. Craig also added that he had been a fan of the club since its creation in 1999 and told how last season ‘hurt’ him.
“We were poor last season, we have no excuses, but now Gary is here i think our luck is about to change”
Linekers first game in charge of Team Northumbria will be away at Sunderland Ryhope CA on the 8th August. As a special promotion the chairman has told the fans that if Lineker leads the team to promotion this season tickets renewal will be free for the next 2 seasons.
