Hey guys,my laptop crashed recently and iv been looking for a new computer to play fm on and use the net and download music.

Just wondering if anybody knows of any desktop deals and what kind of spec i should be looking for to play fm at high performance? Also would it be cheaper to buy an new desktop or just try get the one i have upgraded???

Mine's an Acer aspire 5732z. I would highly reccomend this, you can get them for seriously cheap, considering the ram etc.

4GB Memory
15.6" HD LCD Screen.
2.1 GHz, 800MHz FSB.

Sounds like a load of foreign language I know, but trust me, runs FM like a beast ;)

Yes but you need the GDP of a small african country to buy one! and you can build a pc to pretty much the same spec for half the price.

When looking for a new desktop try and check out how upgradeable it is because in a couple of years time you will want to upgrade it to play games in the future.

GDP?? what that

Gross Domestic Product. It's a country's overall income. 8-|

On Topic:
I'm not a fan of using laptops for gaming given their not so lengthy lifespan (I heard high end Acer laptops are overclocked to match their selling details). I'd rather build a desktop because it gives wider range of component prices and more flexibility in terms of upgrading.

my pc cost me £450 just over 2 years ago now. It can run FM perfectly fine for me so you really don't have to spend much to get a decent pc, especially one to run FM

For FM it's the CPU that's most important especially if you load a lot of leagues. A quad core is highly recommended. The 3d graphics aren't that taxing so you don't need an uber powerful graphics card.

Upgrade is always cheaper- be without knowing what you have I can't say if it'll be possible or worthwhile so post specs. **** even overclocking may be an option (but not recommended unless you know what you are doing- it's not hard but it's too in depth for here so look around on websites like toms hardware and the like)

I run a Intel quadcore q6600 overclocked to 3.5ghz, 4gb of ram, Vista 64, an an ATI 4850 gfx card. Not top of the range anymore- probably midrange PC now. Large DB All majro European (portugal, England, Russia, Ukraine, Holland, France, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium and Germany) leagues loaded to 2nd division is still 3 1/2 star

Thanks guys,i had an acer laptop but it completely nackered now and sick of getting it fixed. Think ill go for a desktop this time as there easier to upgrade. I have a basic Dell desktop with about 1gig ram but its very slow. Mostly play fm but sometimes play a few fps games and simulators. Budgets fair tight at the minute as i lost my job. Currys seem decent though :)

Id love an alienware but would never pay that much haha

**** on alienware/dell

go with cyberpower pc, best custom computer site on the interwebs.

No it isn't.

Acer are **** anyway, tons of bloatware and low build quality in my experience. That's how they get the price so low.

Better to build your own, no previous knowledge required with sites like buildyourown.org.uk around (the forums are the helpful bit, site content a bit outdated). Dell are decent for laptops (from the outlet to get a sensible price), but never buy a desktop from there.

But as has been said all you need to worry about for playing FM is the CPU, but any decent processor today can. Mine only cost £50 three years ago and it still breezes through a 30k+ player database. Just keep your eyes out for the best CPU your budget will get you in a computer, couple with at least 3GB of RAM (4GB+ preferably) and a decent sized hard drive with Windows 7 (but try to avoid the basic edition). If you can also get a dedicated graphics card (not integrated) with it too go for that and you'll be able to enjoy more graphically taxing games.

To compare the CPU/processors on offer between PCs, use this chart http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html The higher the score, the better. If you can't find a CPU on there, use this to find it and it's relevant chart http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

Will fm11 support six cores? Thinking about upgrading to the x6 (which is why I made sure to go with an AM3 motherboard).

build your own mate, it really isn't hard. Go to a library and borrow a book called upgrading and repairing pc's. That'll teach you how to do it and what you need to buy. go to scan. co.uk pick your parts and build a pc for under 400 that will **** on anything you can buy prebuilt at the same price. Ever done a jigsaw? It's a little bit more complicated than that but not by much

I've just done a quick look and a quad core with a mid range gfx will set you back about 420. If I had the time I'd look in even more depth and be probably able to knock 50 off that price.

Get a custom built PC, there are tons of sites around that offer deals from between £300-£700 on amazing PC's - you may want to check out eBay as well, you can get good cheap custom built PC's on their too. I wouldn't go for a laptop if you are looking to play games..

any pc with 2gb's RAM or more and a duo core processor of 4mhz upwards...
a bonus would be a decent graphics card of at least 256mb (i.e. Geforce 7600GT or so)

I'd go for 4gb RAM & a Quad Core processor ( the faster the better ) if you can afford it. Dual core's a bit past it now IMO - I've got a Dual Core processor with 2gb RAM & the loading times on such games as Far Cry 2 & Dragon Age Origins are awfull.

Re graphics cards, I'd recommend AT LEAST a GeForce 250 with 512mb. Remember that the faster the GC, the hotter it tends to get, so ask whoever's building your rig for you to install a big heat sink or at least one seriously decent cooling fan.

You can always turn down graphic detail on games if you have to, but you're stuck with how fast your processor runs ( unless you overclock it, which I don't recommend ), so I'd say processor speed & RAM are the more crucial factors for a fast system.
