Gosport Borough F.C - The Rise to the Premiership
Gosport: A town located on the British South Coast which lies on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour opposite the City of Portsmouth. A town with a population of 85,000 yet with less than half of adults in employment, that's only notable landmarks are a Naval Base and a view of the Spinnaker Tower across the water. That is, until now.
With the previous mayor, Wayne Ronayne, stepping down after being banned from all 36 pubs in the town, the new mayor and his deputy, Keith Farr, decided it was time for change. Time for Gosport to be recognised for something positive, something more than it's nice view of the neighbouring city. They decided to organise a fundraiser event at Privett Park, the local team's football stadium, to raise awareness for the club and money to try to move the club, and town, forward. Manager Alex Pike led them to the final of the FA trophy in 2013/2014, but was forced to stepped down to focus on family commitments as his wife, Susanne, had been offered a job abroad.
Loyal fan, 42 year old Robert Hartman, better known as Bob, has been a season ticket holder since his father took him to his first game at the age of 6. His grandfather was even a centre back for Gosport for 12 years. After doing his FA Level 1 and Level 2 coaching qualifications, Bob coached a local U10's team 2 days a week, with great success! He left his job as a council office worker to pursue coaching full time. After tirelessly searching for, and failing to find, a position, he decided that perhaps it was time to return to his 9-5. Then his phone rung, an unknown number, so he answered. It was Paul Andrews, the chairman of Gosport Borough FC, who he'd exchanged words and numbers with at the supports club some 3 or 4 years ago.
Paul had heard from a couple of the staff at the supporters club that Bob was looking for a coaching job and thought that perhaps Bob would be interested in working along side the other coaching staff at Gosport during the pre-season while they search for a manager. Bob, of course, gladly accepted!
After a month, the players and coaches realised Bob had something different, something special, and pleaded with the Chairman to offer him a chance to lead the club for a season. Predicted 18th in the Vanarama Conference South, Paul Andrews realised he had nothing to lose...
