Has the Footall Manager series been dumbed down to attract more casual players?

Why did they remove so many options in terms of the tactics creation aspect? Sliders and many others.

I feel that I have less control over my team tactics than I did on FM13.

Why is that?

Is this supposed to be a good thing? To whom does this change cater to?

Thanks you for answering.

I think that it does make it a bit easier for the casual user, but it also is more realistic. IRL, coaches do not have that much control over their players. They tell them they want them to move forward, for example, but they cannot really control it to the degree of specificity that the game allowed for.

When I started up the demo and first saw the tactics screen, I had the SAME initial impression.

Then I came to realize very quickly that it's the same thing, only more realistic...and imo, better. No more ticking one slider notch and testing a match just to see it's effects. There are just as many combinations and uniqueness in tactics, only it's a little less frustrating now.

i feel its more realistic as well.. we will see more unique tactics being set up..

but i do have an opinion on the roles. they masked out certain instructions for different roles.
what could be more interesting is rather than having the roles pre-defined.
open up the individual instructions..
afterall, the managers dont really tell the player
"you there, you play as a limited defender" with additional instruction "mark tighter"

rather i will tell the defender
"you will play center back" "Mark tigher" "close down your man" "zonal marking" "hoof the ball up field first time" etc...

I respect your opinion but don't agree with this at all.

If anything, the tactics have been designed to stop unwitting conflicting orders being assigned, something the sliders didn't protect you from.

Is that dumbing down? To me it isn't. With the plethora of new player roles added, and the game's willingness to punish those with plug-n-play tactics, the game is as complex as it has ever been.

It's more realistic. How many managers do you think say, "you are playing well but I'd like you to be 5 yards further forward and play passes 5 yards shorter and close down just one notch more." etc etc. It obviously takes a better AI for this version of the game to work. I'm still getting to grips with the impact of the instructions, but it's definitely a good thing.

Having a game more realistic doesn't make it more fun! Managers isn't always the most enjoyable job, but the game does have to be enjoyable. You still expect a game to have a balance between realism and fun. The sliders brought a much comfort feeling over controlling your players, which is a part of the essence of the game.

Real managers don't have sliders, they verbally tell players what they want. This is as near to that as you can get and as much as i liked sliders i prefer this.

No. It's more realistic as others have touched on without the sliders. I've been playing since the 90s and slowly adapting. Nothing to do with casual players which is what FMC is for.

However the transfer side of things, and player progression, surely has tasted the koolaide.

Win some you lose some.

i quite like the new tactics system, as some have said its more realistic id like it to have more options such as asking a player to drop back, i do think theres quite a lot of things they have removed or hidden, last year you used to be able to ask the assistant to find loan players in a specific position i cant find that this year and as im playing in the lower leagues it would help quite a bit as i dont have the ability to scout 20 players quickly

The FM series has always strived for realism. No sliders = realism.

Well, players in real life dont have a green dot to tell which position he can play or not...im just saying that cuz i find a bit strange when people say ''its like that in real life'' or something like. Its a game after all, and it should have these type of things, that only a computer game can have. Im not saying that i deslike the new system or not, i just dont find it fair to say they changed it for the better because its more realistic

So how else would you denote whether he can play in a position or not? fact is there is a better more realistic way of setting up tactics than sliders and they're using it.

The colour of the dot is there so you can actually rember if he is able to perform to his best in the position on the field. In real life, every manager will know this after seeing them train and play and they won't forget about it as them meet them every day but I for one won't be able to keep track of all of my players in various saves.

As for it being realistic, it certainly is as its a huge difference in the Decison making, positioning, anticipating a move when playing in DR versus MR/DC or DMC versus MC/MRL. It's all about feeling confident in knowing what to do and when to do it and being able to use your experience to anticipate other players moves etc. I could agree though that many players could have more positions " in them", especially in the lower leagues where players are not so well scouted.

I fail to discern the benefits of having less options than before. And to counter your argument of realism, real managers are able to utter much more words and give much more detailed instructions than to just say "pinch much higher up the pitch" or "drop deeper back". My point is that I wish to have more control over my players but this year's version of FM gives me less of that.

Do you not agree?

Nope

I don't know what realism you talking about if 3d match went horribly unrealistic. And what the matter how actually tweaks are represent. Game is called football manager, not a football simulator. Now i am cut in managing. Less tweaks, more random. And there was enough random already. Not interested to watch games which i can barely affect. It's like Fifa series without direct control.

I agree.

it gives more realism however dumbed down? no because its still a really hard game... I feel that they should make it easier for beginners
