Help! Can't connect to my friends network game?

Hi guy's just wondering if you've had the same problem.
If yes how do I fix it?
I type in the IP Address of my friends game but it say's 'Unable to connect to server'
Any help would be appreciated.

One very important thing to note, you both must have the same version/patch.

I've been trying to set up a game with a friend. I have both disabled my firewall and added FM to the list of allowed programs (when firewall is on) but it still says he cannot connect to the server/network. We tried with hamachi and got the same result. I would prefer to connect without hamachi, so any help would be appreciated. We both have the same version (at least they are identical on our own games under game status game version). Does he have to disable his firewall to join? I wouldn't think so, but I have been wrong before.
