What can I do or is the save lost for good?

Lost forever unless you had automatic backups turned on.

Oh, okay then. Manage to restore a previous version of it from a few days ago so I'm all sorted now.

if you're happy to play a backup then that's fine. However you could send the save to SI and they may be able to fix it
