I dont know if it will be the end of his career-thats what happened to Beckham and no-one has said it might be for it for him-the idea has been touted but its been responded that he'll return. Hermann could do the same I'm sure, even if he can't do it in the Prem anymore

Hopefully he will return, because if he decides to stay at the end of this season he could be a really important player for us in the Championship.

I think a lot is down to the pitches, they are rock hard, so players are tired, and get injured easier.

Beckham ruptured his achilles. Hreidarsson has snapped his achilles. Career is over if that is the case.

I really need a dislike button for this post :(

Quick update

"This was a vital win for us, and of course I’m delighted." Redknapp told BBC Sport.

However Redknapp's thoughts were with Hreidarsson, who needed oxygen before being stretchered off with an achilles injury.

“The injury to Hermann Hreidarsson has put a real dampener on things," said Redknapp, who worked with the Icelandic international at Portsmouth
" He's one of the best lads and professionals I've ever come across and his looks a real serious injury.

"All the players said they heard his Achilles snap like a gunshot. I really feel for him and, of course, for Portsmouth.”

That's it, unless he's the Bionical Man or is willing to have surgery that will keep him out for at least 14 months and without walking for about 6, I'd say his career is over.

What makes it worse is, he needed an oxygen mask, because he was screaming so much.

This is why i'm watching match of the day tonight, this is truely horrific.

Why do things like this happen to people like Herman who are great professionals, and then you have ***** like Barton :@

Not saying I'd want this to happen to any player, but it's quite frustrating :(

According to specialists, snapping your achilles is more painful than a double leg break.

Aaron Ramsey is just a woos XD

one of my cousins snapped his achilles tendon, never ran again and that was 12 years ago

snapping it is going to leave your ankle deformed for life, there's no way he'll return to the pitch at his age.

I don't think I realised how bad it is. I knew it was a bad one but didn't think it was career-threatening like a double leg break or a cruciate-is it worse than a cruciate? Is it the whole thing that goes from your heel all the up the back of your ankle?

I think its the worst leg injury possible, from what i've heard. Its basically like not having a leg, I doubt you can lift it, let alone have control of it. Just look at the agony you will see him in, if your watching match of the day. Its a bone connecting the foot, the heel and the ankle. I think he will be retiring, what do you guys think?

Achilles tendon is at the back of your foot, pretty much connects your leg to your foot.. If that snaps.. I could only imagine it would be almost impossible to ever be able to walk properly let alone run and play football. Although I would imagine it takes a huge impact for it to snap considering it's quite well protected..

I should really put MOTD on and see this :/

Your Achilles tendon is an elastic that you can feel at the back of your foot. If that snaps they have to put a hook at the bottom of your ankle and pull it back down onto the hook, a bit like if you break an elastic band.

A snapped Achilles is pretty much the worst injury you could get as a footballer other than other near death injuries.

He will obviously retire, if he has an operation he'll be out for atleast a year and a bit more, and at his age there's not much point. Plus you can barely run after the injury. With an injury like this you may aswell cut off your foot tbh as it's pretty useless.

Man that's so bad, I feel so sorry for him if thats the case. Watching MOTD so will see it in a bit.

Whats the difference between this and what Beckham did? Even if Beckham ruptured it, that sounds like snapped :S

Same, it really made me upset writing all the comments and stuff, so bad for him and Pompey.

And Beckham ruptured his, ruptured is when the pressure on the joint or tendon builds up so much that it becomes painful. It happens when a sudden change of speed happens, hence happens to a lot of runners and sprinters. Whereas, Hreidarsson completely snapped his, meaning theres nothing to support his foot when moving or running, which makes it so bad.

Portsmouth match is on next.
BBC1 - Match of the Day.
