I used a DLP and BWM for Kiel in Germany Div 3.
BWM - Support at the side of a FB Def and DLP - Def at the side of a CWB.
They played well and got promoted to Div 2 but then it became useless.

if your passing focus is through the middle, one of them needs to be creative, and the other needs to connect the team(DMs)...if your passing focus is on the flanks, then the creative one can be an anchor man

you need to give more information to get an answer appropriate to the style of play you wish to achieve, as you have mentioned "holding" players in the title you should look at the roles available to you in this position and find out which are holding, which are pressing and which are more creative.

for holding roles I personally would advise and anchor man along side a deeplying playmaker on support.

This will give you the box type defense which was discussed at the end of the chelsea man city game last night, you would have cover for advancing wing back and also a link up player in the DLP.

Regista and Half-Back worked for me for about 5 seasons before I got bored of how they completely controlled the midfield, and wanted to switch my formation up to a 4-3-3
