Hi all,

I have been using the tika taka tactic recently with dortmund & in some games the possession stats are unreal. I had nearly 70% possession against Bayern & close to that with the games that followed. However, after about 6 games in the tactic was fully fluid & possession suddenly stopped. Instead of being upwards of 60% its 50 50 or less! I have made the suggested changes people have been posting about the tactic such as change overload to control and iv also moved the inside forwards back to amr, aml. Any advice on how I can get possession again? seems strange that i was getting such a high possession stat and now cant seem to string a pass. I have compared the matches & the only major difference is that my keeper is hoofing the ball up the park now whereas before he wasn't. His personal instructions are to distribute to defenders & pass short and he has no preferred moves & i can't get the coaches to train him to do anything specifically. If you need me to post any instructions let me know however its the exact same as the tika taka tactic allready had.

just played another match there and got 70% possession, seems completely random this game

Not quiet, its working just fine. I'm managing FC Porto and I've played 14 matches in the league and all 6 in group phase of Champions League and just in one match my possession was 50-50, all others around 65-70 and more, even against teams like AC Milan or Leverkusen. You've got to find the right balance between risk and possession, Control will give you few risk, Overload will give you too much risk.
Also understand that there are a few issues that you won't be able to replicate in FM: in football, teams that play against the old Barcelona or the current Bayern Munchen set by default a high deeper defense line, even teams with equal status do this and in FM it just doesn't happen.

Try using a more defensive mentality, such as counter. Your players will look to hold the ball a bit deeper and play less adventurous passes. Also try setting your fluidity to more rigid so players do a specific job instead of trying to do too much, this will increase focus on ball retention (if that's what your players settings are geared towards) whereas fluid will see them trying to attack/defend/cross/dribble because they are allowed too. My Chelsea team regularly get 70-80% possession, highest I've had was 87% though that was against Redditch Utd ;)

Right, the problem is that playing counter your team will sit deeper and that means the opponent has more space. Also, a more defensive strategy means less aggressiveness / pressure on hassle opponents.

Lower tempo, pass it shoter(obvisously), work ball into the box and instruct the keeper to distribute the ball to defenders. Mentality should be to 'control'.
