Hello
I was wondering if the tactical gurus can give me some advice on how to play possession football. Here are the settings that I have decided to go with but I am sure about the creative freedom and philosophy. I read that it is best to change the creative freedom to more discipline because then the players will stick to your instructions better. Also would having them on more roaming have a negative result on possesion for the team.
What do you guys recommend for the philosophy would fluid be more suited to possession football. I only chose balnace because in the tactical books it mentions that balance gives you a bit of fluid and rigid philosophy

Basically i want to keep the ball like barcelona and arsenal. I have the players who can play this type of football because they have the right technical and mental attributes

Philosophy - Balance
Starting Strategy - Control
Passing Style - Shorter
Creative Freedom - More Expressive
Closing Down - Default (I have chosen Closing down default because the defensive line is already pushed up above normal so that will make them close down the space quickly)
Tackling - More aggressive (because i want to win the ball back quickly)
Marking - Zonal
Crossing - Drill Croses
Roaming - More Roaming
Defensive Line - Normal 13 on slider
Width Narrow (so that team stays closer togther and have passing options)
Time Wasting - rarely
Tempo - Normal 7 notches on slider
Focus passing - mixed
Counter attack - Yes
Would love to get you guys feedback on this

set creative freedom to discliplined
no roaming, set your creative mid to "move into channels"

set your defensive line to high (not sure how many on slider (maybe 18/20)
time wasting (set it to default, it will change according to your strategy)
tempo - slow slow slow (2/10)

focus passing - through the middle (what tactic are you using?)
counter attack wont be that effective as you are using a semi high d line and you are not using direct and quick tempo so set it as off (plus you want to retain possession, not give it away on the counter)

if you are making a brand new tactic, I suggest Rigid as each player his their own role and wont assimilate into the other roles (Rigid)

this tactic here seems to be doing very well and has at least 60% possession (minimum)

I am using the 4231 formation with Arsenal. Wilshere and Song patrol the midfield breaking plays and starting attacking moves while fabregas is the creative player playing in the AMC position so would you recommend to set my focus passing through the middle. Would having the defensive line so high make my defense weak when a teams plays a ball over the top or when I come up against a very fast and physical striker like torres or drogba. I have Vermalean and Koscielney my first choice centre backs with Sequallici and DJHOROU filling in as back they do not have enough pace and I was worried about them get ripped apart and playing against pacey strikers

definately through the middle if you are playing 3 in midfield....

no it won't mate, all you do when you play against quick strikers like Gabby set tight marking to never... bring in:
Mario Fernandes - Gremio

zonal or man marking is beter for possesion football?

zonal marking works well for me :)

As for the topic:

i play possession football by setting:
1) high defensive line
2) narrow width
3) very slow tempo
4) press press and press your opponent!!
5) i usually play well playing 4-5-1 formation

Hope this helps you as well :)

by setting tight marking to never would that leave the strikers and wingers with no one covering them and may give them too much space and freedom to do what they want

Thanks JRkiller for that

How high to you recommend that I set my defensive line. I am a bit worried that I might get torn apart by very fast strikers such as Torres and Defoe. Also I will be playing a 4231 formation so do you think this will be ok

@Raikan Do you still win the match with possession football ? Sometimes my team struggle to win the match if we play possession football

I find man marking better with aggressive pressing, as it is more aggressive. Zonal marking maintains team shape better, but it may result to couple easy passes that slices your pressing apart. For defensive tactics I would use zonal, as it makes it harder to make and exploit any gaps in defence.

Also, when playing with high defensive line, I have bad experiences with stopper/cover combo, as opposition strikers often avoided offside because my covering CB sitting too deep, and often scoring because of it altough my CB is faster than most of the strikers he was facing.

What CB partnership would you recommend when playing a high defensive line

I have always used a Stopper/Cover combo. I play the highest line possible too. I don't see anything wrong with it TBH.

stopper/stopper always worked good for me, 16 goals suferred in my first season with inter :D

was your defensive line deep or high? And how did you set your fullbacks? Sounds like that might leave too much space behind your defence if both CB's pushing up at the same time.

yeah I do mate, especially with the tactic I linked above :)

if set on zonal marking your defenders will jockey the player and not commit and if also asked to show to weaker foot will push them out further away from the danger area mate! trust me, it works!

possession football doesnt necessarily mean you score bagloads of goals. i had a tactic where i got 70% possession and 90% pass completion and scored on average 1.5 goals a match but sometimes no goals.

exactly, just because you dominate possession does not mean you will win games! you need to find a good balance. my tactic above averages about 1.8 gls a game and like 0.4 conceding...

the 4-3-3 barcelona style tactic i just posted scores so many goals and conceeds not so much. i am in december in the league and has conceeded 5 goals in 15 league games and scored 41.

oh and it keeps possesion at around 60% with 82-85% pass completion. Secret Weapon Milan (A.C. Milan, Dec 2014).tac ;)

This is the tactic I've played with Inter (11.3) before I've come to Madrid (now I play a 4-2-3-1 because it suits the team better and I less cautious then I was in Italian football).

The whole idea was for the team to press high and compress the field, and exploit the offside rule, just like the Holland did in 1974, and for that you need that all your defensive line play very high, and congest the center midfield area so that the oposition won't be able to play the ball on your backside.
