I'm not exactly looking for a player as such , more like your scouting tactics.
How do you find your players when your searching for players. What attributes to search for , for example a Wing Back? I've always relied on my assistant managers recommendations but they don't always turn out the way i hope, so that's why i'm asking for your techinques :)

I couldn't find another thread on this , but if i'm wrong then feel free to lock and redirect me.
Thanks :)

Mining & panning.

Scout the world!

and if that fails...

FM Scout!

Mining & panning.
Bear with me and my questions , but what is "Mining & panning" ? :P

Thanks for the replies!

I used Genie scout in FM11 for a while but it felt too much like cheating :P

Well one way that I use is to go through national teams of S-America and Europe and sort the players by age so you can see the top prospects in each country.
You can also go through the youth teams of each country and sort by value.

Anyway you just have to be patient and know what you are looking for.

Scout reports.
Filtering attributes that I want in a player and toning them down and setting an age limit.
Looking through national teams/clubs with famous youth systems.

Thanks for all the posts guys , i'll try out a few things :)

Free agents
Scout small nations
Scout Brazil
Scout Germany
Scout Ireland
Scout Italy

Found some absolute gems from the aforementioned countries

Genie Scout, duh.

Why would I waste like 2 hours of my life looking for players when I can find the exact same players 1 hour and 55 minutes earlier.

So cheap, I think the scouting aspect is a wonderful world of daisy's and unicorns. You need to write down a list of attributes you want in your positions. I.E look at your current wing back and see what his higher attributes are and look for players with similar attributes.

CB: Composure, Heading and Tackling. ETC.

Then i normally imput "Contract status: Expired" then add my age bracket (Under 21) then i'll add the attribute I am looking for (AMR/L) Flair + Crossing. And it'll fliter a good chunk of players for you.

Scout reports work well, I generally send one scout to scotland and make him watch their youth league and pick up any talent seen there.

Well I find mine like real life managers, extensive scouting and a bit of luck. Also once I find a top class youngster I save a personal shortlist Keep them for reference for future saves

No need for scouts. I just search inside my pants and there they are XD Suggestive thread title :P

Being serious now. There are many many youngsters in the 6months before contract ending, good opportunity of business ;)!

usually scout as much as i can
also a lot of backroom advice , the coaches offer u great finds sometimes
i try to find players who potentially could have a average attribute rate at the role i look for around 16 or so
or look up the player search, around 1st july when there are a lot of free players available

I have about 11 scouts all searching the top nations, continents and youth tournaments for players under 21/18.

Quite a lot I've scouted manually by filtering out players over 19 (then keep dropping the age if I want youth players), and sort them by value and constantly scout the top 20-30 players every few months.

Also what I find a huge help is setting up your 'VIEWS'. I've been a bit lazy this year and only really set up a custom view for my squad home page and two for scouting players- one has all of the personal info, contract info, scout reports PA/CA, season stats ect. The other has all of the personal info, value, scout PA/CA plus all of the outfield attributes which are classed together (ie striker atts in one cluster, mid atts clustered in the middle and def atts at the end).

Using this view and searching for players under 18 the good youths literally jump out of the screen at you(if they've been scouted or no masking)

Because 30% of the game is finding talents and good/cheap targets :), wasting some money on youngsters that are turning out **** is kinda realistic!

Anyways my tips:
Scout South America, Argentina and Brazil giving the most promising players.
Scout -19-20-21 leagues if u can, All youngsters WK/EK or other tournaments
Check youngsters from Top teams ( Barca, Real Madrid, mutd, man city, arsenal etc)
Scout Spain, Italy, Germany, England, France.

Still not finding? Or scouts limited? Go to a random 1st division brazil team, check -19, sort by value and pick the highest valued youngsters to scout m :P (preferably right after 20sept ;) cus they regen at that date :P)

Little tip. I've come across some really god regens at age 14-15 too.

With me, I just go to the search screen choose one stat, filter to age 18 and see who is highest, and anyone that stands out is snapped up. Most of the time they have peaked, even though my scouts say they shall amaze me.

Other times, I see who turns out well on other saves for other teams and I buy them on other saves.

Personally, if I am trying to find young talent, I go to the transfer center, add 'potential' as a filter and set it to 4 and 1/2 stars (you can set it to what ever you like depending on how much money you have/how good a young player you want) then I sort it by age.
