How do you select National Squads?

I've just started my first National Job since maybe 2010.

How do you guys go about selecting the best side ? So far i've just been abiding by what my assistant suggests and it's been working out good but i often see the media saying i shouldn't have so and so in the squad and leaving so and so out.

I don't really understand that National Pool either.

Some general tips and advice would be much appreciated

Decide on the formation and style, and pic the players for it, rather than the other way round. Looks at attributes over stars, current form and morale of the player being called up.
