How does compensation work?

I have this young star in my team, signed him for pennies last year.

He is out of contract at the end of this next season, and Tottenham are after him. He won't sign a new contract and it looks like I am going to lose him.

However, I was wondering if I run his contract down will I get compensation if someone signs him on a 'free'? Because at the moment I am torn between selling him this summer to make some money from him or letting his contract run down. If I get compensation then I will let his contract run down, I just wanted some clarification on how this works?

if Spurs sign him while he's still at your club you will receive compensation, but if his contract runs out he will be released from your club
