How does gameplay work with multiplayer on steam and mac

Hi, I'm a newbie when it comes to multiplayer so this is probably a stupid question:

I have set up a network game with two players using only two macs with fm12 and steam.
It looked as if it worked perfectly in the beginning when we were both online, but as soon as I tried to play alone and clicked "take control" I could just keep playing with my team with apparantly my friend's team being controlled by the computer...

Isn't there some kind of "now it's your opponents move" kind of thing?

Well no, network games work with all players playing at the same time, it isn't turn based.

Well, only the host can load the game up. So you cannot play without the host, but the host can play alone.
