How important are your coaches?

Every game i have played i have spent the first week or so getting in 4/5 star coaches for everything, but now im starting a game with cardiff and its hard to get any coaches as the wage budget ive got is so low. So how important actually is it to have top star coaches? Should i bother searching for ages or just leave it until a later time.
