Just wondering what tactics makers out there think about long shots and how many is acceptable in a game.

For me long shots fall into 3 categories.

1) There is a genuine goalscoring chance: ie. Keeper off his line.
2) Player has low teamwork and shoots for glory.
3) Your tactic dose not allow for a transition from midfield to attack and the players shoot out of desperation/no passing opportunities.

It's not really down to How many is acceptable. You need to identify where the long shots are coming from and why they are coming, then you can decide if they are good or bad.

Interesting idea, what about the lower leagues? I've seen a lot more long shot goals but they also have a lot less skill so when they do miss it goes out for a throw in!

For me it depends on how you play, if you're going for a very attacking style and plan to get 20-25 shots a game at least then expect upwards of 6-7. I've switched back to a more possession type and I don't usually get more than 3 a game unless a real chance from range pops up.

I would be worried if you were getting into double figures though in any style, unless you were getting near 40 shots in a game.
