After today's 1-2 defeat to Lanus at the Monumental, and Olimpo's () 0-1 away victory against Quilmes (A result that saw the latter relegated), River Plate, the most succesful club in Argentina's domestic competitions, will be involved for the first time in over 100 years of history in a promotion/relegation play-off. There, they will face Belgrano, from Córdoba, who after a slow start to the season (11 points in the first 13 matches) managed to reach fourth place, including a 14 match unbeaten run. River, on the other hand, are on a 7 match winless streak, with 3 defeats and 4 draws.

Matches will be played this Wednesday in Córdoba and next Sunday in Buenos Aires, with no away goals rule. Also, the Primera División team will remain in the top tier if the scores are level after 180 minutes, without extra time nor penalties to decide the outcome.

:O what happened to them this season?

It's not this season - the stupid relegation system in Argentina is based on a points average over three seasons. They even finished last for a season, and this one was the best out of the three taken into account. However, they were still far off expectations - many expected them to be contenders and they were for some time, but they had a dip in form by the end of the season and it all ended up badly for them.

Latest news, a 68 y/o fan died after the match due to natural causes (As in 'not killed')

Big teams getting relegated is normal in Brazil. Palmeiras won the Série B in 2003, 2 years after reaching the semi-finals of Libertadores three times in a row. Corinthians was relegated in 2007, 2 years after being National Champions. Vasco won the second division in 2009 and Grêmio won The Battle of Aflitos, the "final match" of Série B against Sport. Current Brasileirão champions, Fluminense, even played the 3rd division. But I don't believe River will be relegated(unfortunatly), but they'll come back if that happens.

god damnit . River Plate in relegation . i used to seem them as a good side together with boca and velez

that insane thought, averaging results after 3 seasons and put them in order.

Oh I can see them going down - they're playing badly and don't seem to be able to get a win no matter what. Today's the first match - we shall see.

Isn't this something to do with Argentina's bonkers three year average relegation system?

EDIT: So it is, didn't read the thread. :$ Shame.

That system saved them on other occasions - they were last once. The system was made to protect bigger clubs while ******** with the smaller ones - if you're a big club you're supposed to have a higher income (As opposed to the smaller clubs) and thus if you have a couple **** years you can always buy top players and get out of it, but this time River are in very, very deep financial ****. OTOH recent years have seen the rise of smaller but well run clubs. None of the '5 grandes' (Big 5) made it to the top 5 in the last tournament.

Just like Juventus when they got relegated..

Why did River sell buonanotte btw?Wasn't he a Key Player?

Forget what I said. The Battle of Aflitos(most amazing match in this century) was Náutico x Grêmio.

During the 2005 season, Grêmio played the Série B final against Nautico. After the referee whistled a penalty against Grêmio, minutes before the the end of the match, the whole squad of the Imortais started to argue with the referee, in a ten minute long discussion. The match was 0x0, and by losing, Grêmio wouldn't get promoted. During the match, one player was sent off, and during the discussion, 3 played got red cards, meaning the Tricolores had only 7 players. The penalty, taken at the mark of 59 minutes(of the second half, 104' in European style), was going to be one the last moment of the game that would be a scar in their history. But Galatto defended the penalty, and Anderson scored in a counter-attack. Grêmio were then the 2005 Champions of the Second Division.

Hey, wait, it is 2-0 Belgrano?

Indeed, Belgrano won 2 - 0.

Thanks to the no away goals or overtime rule I'm sure River will win 2-0 or 3-1 and advance. No way they'll get relegated at El Monumental, and I'm sure the refs will help. It would probably cost the Argentine league a lot of money if River got relegated (although it would probably be good for everyone in the long run). Belgrano had a similar opportunity in 2008 against Racing and choked. They would have won if one of their players hadn't fallen over in front of a wide open net (he had the ball and had beaten everyone).

River scored 2 goals only once in the whole championship - odds are they won't do it again. It's going to be really hard for them to stay up, a lot harder than you think.

Its a shame to see them decline so much but at least Argentina have plenty of clubs challenging now. At one stage it was all Boca or River to win.

Off topic now but how is Daniel Villalva doing for them? I seen him play about 3 years ago and was a promising talent but heard he had a bad injury earlier this season?

He's still there , Malaga game them as 1 year loan deal.

Neither Buonanotte nor Villalva were considered by the manager. Lopez has been heavily criticised for his defensive approach to the game, playing with 5 defenders and 2 holding midfielders on several occasions, and a 'battling' forward in Mariano Pavone. He has incurred the hatred of many River fans for these decisions, as Villalva has been doing very well in the reserves yet he hasn't even been called up to the bench.
