Since the 4-4-2 only uses two midfielders, using a formation that has one more gives you that advantage. Playing formations such as a 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1, 4-2-3-1 (etc.) have more than two central midfielders and an extra midfielder - whether they are defensive or attacking.
Then just sort it into a possession-dominating tactic or a fluid, freeplay tactic that exposes them defensively. Just think Germany vs. England in the World Cup last year ...
